Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 22 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

With the ‘is listening to an audiobook also reading’, I sometimes think of how we consider typing something on your computer as writing too. Yes, you’re not actually writing with pen to paper, but your mind is doing the same activity (thinking up words and putting them down) and I think that’s the same for reading through listening

David Montgomery Doesn’t mean we should shame people who primarily listen to audiobooks over reading. I myself am an extremely busy person. I work 2 jobs, one 8 hours during the day, and the other 3 hours after my 8 hr shift. After that, I obviously go home, sleep, and maybe on my days off I’ll be able to read, but most the time I try to hang out w/ friends because specializing & maintaining friendships is more important. But between that time I’m so incredibly busy I don’t have any time to sit and read, especially since our breaks have been cut due to COVID. So, I listen to audiobooks. I’ll sometimes get through 3 books a day, and it helps take the stress off so much when I’m working (I dishwash, and you’re allowed to listen to music so it’s chill). I do agree it’s a different experience. But I have an amazing memory for audio (I remember people’s voices/sounds better than I do their faces) so it’s honestly ideal for someone with an incredibly busy schedule.

@David Montgomery No, I think her example is more correct than yours. Typing is hitting your fingers onto small plastic buttons while staring straight ahead (hopefully) into a monitor VS writing is holding a pen / pencil and intermittently pressing it against a surface seeing the charcoal / ink creating traces of letters. These actions are very distinctive and not at all alike, especially if you take away the monitor. However, I'm pretty sure the same region(s) of your brains would light up in the same manners under MRI scans.

I prefer physical books for many reasons, but I do like the ease of reading with an ereader, just rolling around or laying on my side in bed with it propped up next to me, having a dictionary built in when I don't know a word. @@glacecoco By ventilator do you mean like an exhaust fan or the huge expensive central ac system installed in buildings? Only an actual AC can match up to that! A water cooler is basically a simple fan with a compartment for storing water and a small pump, you fill it with water and plug it in wherever you need, the pump circulates the water through a filter and the fan blows air outward pulling micro drops of water from it, so the air becomes cool and refreshing, it can immediately lower room temp by at least 2 C, but when cooling it's best to place it near an open window/door or the room could get too humid,

i actually had the audiobook conversation with my friends earlier this year. they were trying to make a point that audiobooks don't count as reading, and while i agree that it's definitely a more passive way to experience a story, i find saying they don't count as reading is ableist. some people are dyslexic, some are blind. i think it's important to note why we read, and it's (typically) to experience a story or to learn something new. you're still consuming the story whether you look at the words or hear them. and i love the point you made about how it's up to you as the reader/listener on how much you're actively consuming. but i feel like this conversation has been coming up a lot more frequently and i love that a lot of people (especially on booktube/bookstagram) are realizing that it's okay to consume a story on however they see fit

Cleaning a house, working, etc. other than that, I’ve come to enjoy audiobooks a little more than reading because I feel like there’s a real person telling me their story. They inhabit the character, and it feels like a more personal experience.

Hey Leo - great post: For multiples, I always have more than one Shakespeare, Bible, and Dictionary but only rarely any others; I haven't read Harry Potter, and I've seen part of one or two movies, so I guess that makes me neutral/other; I much prefer hardbacks, as I can be pretty hard on paperbacks; Yeah, I've seen at least two Percy Jackson films but am unlikely to do more, so I'm neutral? Classics are great, and I can't understand why people waste their precious reading time in genres they expect to dislike; Audio reading depends on the voice. Some of them are awful. With the good ones, it's better than reading. With the awful ones it's like tossing cards into a hat; E-books are valuable but better? I don't think so - they're the same; And of course character is superior to plot. There are no new plots but there are infinite possibilities for new characters. I would be more controversial if I'd allowed myself to let Percy and Harry trigger me, but now it's live and let live. A lot of people seem to really enjoy them, so maybe I should lighten up a bit?

And yeah I prefer paperbacks, hardbacks can be pretty, but they are inconvenient and dust jackets are a pain. The Percy Jackson movie got me into the books so I'm grateful for it ^^

I have autism so my concentration abilities are just none existent so audiobooks makes it so much easier for me to read a book. I LOOOVE physical books, they just take longer for me and if every book took me a really long time to read I'd, from experience, stop being interested. I love a quote I read that said that audiobooks are for people who want to read MORE, and that's so true. Also when did listening comprehension become less than reading comprehension lol? Okay so I'm more of a classical books nerd, I especially love the romanticism era classics but I did my fair share in YA/fantasy books, like I didn't read classics until roughly a year and a half ago. The thing about character/plot is, in a good book they should compliment eachother. Most good classics have a plot right, but the character and their emotions are overall, more important to the writer. Dostoyevsky, Edgar Allan Poe, Goethe, Tolstoy, Stefan Zweig... These are legendary authors because if they have an uninteresting character, they know how to make an interesting and complex plot that gives life to the character. İf their plot doesn't have that much going for it, they know how to reel the reader in with interesting and relevant characters. But let's be honest, most of the time these authors (and more) know how to balance those stuff out, creating an interesting character that compliments the compelling plot. And of course there are authors that are not considered classical authors who can do this just as good, be it in the 21st century or not. The reason I gave examples from classical literature is because I'm more familiar with it So to end my rant, a good author should know how to make the plot and the characters complimentary

I listen to audiobook while I do boring and repetitive tasks that I barely even have to think about, then my mind can drift off into the book that I'm listening to. That way I can still immerse myself into the story while just passively doing something else that I would likely not enjoy doing otherwise. Tbh I can't just sit down and listen to audio book while doing nothing either 'cause I just have this weird thing where I have to be doing something passively on the side so that I could fully listen to an audio book.

I read while eating, while drinking, with (instrumental) music on in the background, on the bus, while walking... none of that necessarily hinders the immersion. I get immersed just as much, plus a somewhat boring activity is made fun in the process. Although it really is on a book by book basis, if the text is complex and I wanna savour it more academically, I'm gonna read it, but if it's mostly a story-driven and character-driven thing I like to listen, have a voice narrate it to me. After all it's how literature was born, people telling stories to each other :) The first great classics of Homer have the same origin. edit: now I see she mentions the same thing in the video, sorry, didn't watch ahead!

Imho buying different versions of the same book IS absolutely a waste of money, 100%. If you're SURE you're going to be happy after buying different version (just to look at them? I guess?), then, go for it, 100%. But heh, more and different books could have been bought with those money. Paperback are "easier" to read, since they bend. Hardback are infinitely better looking, imho and they do not bend when you're just carrying them to place them somewhere else. I have a backpack so I have more problem with paperback that can easily bend and be damaged. EXACTLY, what ARE classics? That speech is 100% TRUTH. I agree with your listening-reading answer. Loved the "traditional" rant HAHAHA Uhh, the character-plot question is more difficult than it seems. I have a bad memory, so i can't remember WHY i loved some books. I think i'll go with... worldbuilding. After that, characters and plot are both equally important. If I hate the characters, I want them dead or i do not care about what happens to them. If the plot is...not, what am I reading? Nothing. Just a bunch of people doing random things. But, luckly, as far as I can remember, I never read a book with no plot. That internet dialing up bit HAHAHAHAHA

It's part of the reason why I couldn't get into the red queen series, the plot is cool, yeah but I could not care less about the characters so I dropped it. Characters are what drives the plot, it adds to the plot, it's who we want to see continue on throughout the plot so it only makes sense for people to care about the characters more (imo)

I can't read audio books because I will always find myself doing something else and about 30 minutes in I will realize that I haven't been paying attention for the last 20 minutes. I have noticed that there are two times where audio books would work for me; first in the shower, but I take 5-10 minute showers so it would come to a few pages of reading, second is in the car, but my commute to work is not terribly long and I carpool with my husband so we would both have to agree on the book and I don't see that happening, plus I wouldn't sacrifice NPR for audio books. Other than the shower or the car, I will end up doing something else and soon end up missing most of the book. However, I personally think they are fantastic for a lot of people and really great for anyone who has visual impairment. Cool fact by the way, when writing became a common practice, the older generation criticized the format saying pretty much that it was going to rot the brains of the youth. They felt that it was for stupid people so people wouldn't have to think about concepts, they could just refer to a book and never have to think for themselves. In a way, audio books are a return to verbal story telling so according to some people in ancient Greece, it is a return to a superior style.

After all this time, the truth is that a physical book almost seems like torture to me, it feels heavy and uncomfortable. I only buy physical copies of graphic novels, some special editions or for singnings. Regarding the screens, ebooks are not tablets, they do not have brightness. I admit that the charm of the book is greater (Yes: the smell, the texture and all that) but I would like to see a little more love for the ebook on booktube ... I can't be the only one that finds it so convenient and loves it 😂

If your Characters are lovable but your plots are weak you can still love the book and want to keep reading a series. If your characters are weak but the plot is strong, who is going to care about it? If you don't care about the characters, you don't care what happens to them or their world etc. If you have great characters, you can lead them through many plots, good and bad and your readers will enjoy the journey. If your characters are weak, the plots can't make you love the book or want to read the next one. Plots are the vehicles, like Cars and characters are the drivers. Would you rather read about a collection of interesting people ro a parking lot?

Yet, First Law is definitely the characters... I've read 8 books for the characters, even though most of the characters I wouldn't pee on if they were on fire. But the ones I do care for make it worth my time to read the story. I will keep reading as they keep coming because of them. The plots are weak, truly, but the characters make the books. I feel like with the audiobook question, its about intention of the question and terminology. The real question should be, "Does listening to an audiobook count as consuming that novel?" In which case I would say, yes it does. I will always say though, that physically reading a book makes me more prideful. Like I feel like I accomplished more if I physically read a book than listened to one. This probably because you are usually more proud of something that takes more effort. just because you have to dedicate 100% of your attention to reading a book and you have to make time to do nothing but sit down and read that book. You can always multitask with an audiobook which makes me finish them faster because I can double on how often I can consume it. I average 5 books a month and I couldnt do that if I didnt listen to atleast 1 to 2 audiobooks a month.

Going through point by point, because I can lolol 1) I said "disagree" to buying multiple copies being pointless, mostly because I've done it and I'd be a massive hypocrite if I unilaterally condemned it. I have three copies of of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (spot the American): My original damn-near-shredded-to-bits copy that I keep for nostalgia, one that's slightly less beat up, and the illustrated edition. I also have three copies of Chamber of Secrets and two of Prisoner of Azkaban: my original American English copies, one each in French, and the illustrated edition of CoS. I'd like to eventually have those three editions of each book. I do have what I think are good reasons for owning different copies, namely passing a more immersive experience down to my children one day (illustrated) and getting in some language practice (French), and I do find it less justifiable to buy a different edition simply because the cover is prettier -- but, I do ultimately own multiples. 2) As might have been made obvious by the above, I can't agree that Harry Potter is overrated (((: I get why some people might think it is, especially if they're older or younger than the target demographic at the time, but... well, I was eight in 2001, and I was swept away. It came to me at exactly the right time. It was my life growing up. I'm still figuring out what to do going forward in the wake of Rowling's statements, but renouncing Harry Potter completely won't be part of it. 3) *pAPERBACKIES.* ... Further potentially controversial opinion, I get paperbacks because I know they will get more weathered, and I *love* when my books get weathered. I don't need my shelves to look pristine. 4) I read the Percy Jackson books once each, and I've seen bits of the first movie, possibly also bits of the second? Either way, I was pretty meh on both. I feel bad for it, too, because I know that was a lot of people's Harry Potter, but it just came to me way too late in life and I'm not really into Greek mythology. 5) I'm at a point in my life where I'm extremely interested in diving into classics, and just diving into them as I see fit, so yeah, I solidly disagree that classics aren't actually good. I understand why people would feel really excluded from the classics or walk away from them with a sour taste in their mouths, especially if they're Americans -- I think our broader school system has a tendency to teach literature as a whole as this thing that simultaneously needs to be elevated to the highest possible pedestal (i.e. you need to study it intensely, i.e. your workload is going to be huge) and won't be worth your time later in life (i.e. you're going to be pushed to study STEM, i.e. the humanities are worthless). Like, that conflicting messaging is going to kill your interest in reading if you aren't already a reader. That said, it's also going to give you a lot of skewed ideas of what literature is and what its value is. The fact that classics are often taught badly doesn't mean that they are themselves bad. 6) YES to the point of storytelling being an oral tradition. Yes yes yes. I prefer reading physical books, but I also love listening to an audiobook while I'm on a walk or driving a long distance or doing chores, where my body is occupied but my mind isn't necessarily -- and I said it elsewhere already, but in some instances, doing that stuff actually enhances my experience. Like, I have specific memories of where I was and what I was doing while I was listening to a book that really moved me, the same as I do with physical books. Ultimately, I think there's no avoiding the underlying elements of gatekeeping and purism if you actively advocate against classifying listening to an audiobook as reading, where reading means experiencing the book. 7) I don't read ebooks either, but I have friends and family who are fierce advocates for reasons of expediency and saving money... I can't begrudge them that. 8) I'm like you in that I like seeing cool plots happen to characters I care about, but I don't really like categorizing one or the other as more important. They both are. If the characters are cool but the plot is poorly executed, I'm out. If the plot is cool but the characters are flat, I'm also out.

I would say Paperbacks are how I would prefer to read a book. But Hardbacks look better on the shelf and to display. (This actually leads into the multiple copies of books) I dont really think that there "isnt a point" especially if you look at books as decoration. Is there a point to have anything in your house that isnt furniture, technology or food? If I really like a series then I usually want to have it as a hardback. Or if you dont have the same edition or hardback/paperback version to match the series, youd want to buy a matching set. (Although this ladder example infers that you will most likely sell the old versions so its a little off the topic.)

I'm pretty neutral on the character vs. plot thing. I feel like I read a lot of books where I just don't care at all about the characters, like I just won't feel connected to any of them and will forget their names as soon as I'm finished reading but I will still remember the plot pretty well, and then there are some books that are the complete opposite, where I will just fall in love with a character and I don't care about the plot at all.
