Do light modifiers matter? What's the difference between a normal reflector and a softbox? In this episode, Mark Wallace compares five common light modifiers; a white umbrella, standard reflector, a Profoto Magnum reflector, a square softbox, and a medium-sized octabox.

    Thank you Mark! This is an outstanding side by side by side comparison of the 3 light sources. And your running commentary explaining how to evaluate each is very helpful. The difference between the umbrella and softbox is a much greater difference than I would have expected. Thank you to you and Adorama who does all my prints and photo books.

    It hadn’t occurred to me that the silver parabolic would actually increase the resulting light output. Would the use of a fabric diffuser cover, similar to on a soft box, work well with this without having a net loss of light output?

    This was really great. I have a studio shoot coming up and I’m looking forward to trying some of what I’ve been learning from you here and also from several other of your tutorials. Also, I like the perspective in these images a lot. Would you mind sharing the focal length you selected for these?

    With the hard light, what chin shadows we're you trying to reduce? I started to read more shadows when you directed the models face toward the camera

    It's the shadow on the neck. It's a "slash" across her neck when her head is turned instead of even when she faces the light.

    great video. But Im confused, is the lighting continous or strobe? I see the light is continous throughout the shoot, but still seeing strobe flashing at the same time.

    The strobes have modelling lights

  • @jpdj2715

    @jpdj2715

    5 жыл бұрын

    In addition to Dale's reply, studio strobes generally come with modeling light. These are of two kinds: proportional or not. Proportional means the amount of modeling lights is reduced with reduction of the flash power setting. This gives the intended effect only if the heads in your studio match: when one head is 2 F stops lower than the other, the modeling light allows you to see the effect. Why stull using flash? Because it gives many times more light than halogen or LED lamps. A strong on-camera speedlight compares to about 75 Joules of flash energy. When output in 1/880 sec, the power of the flash in Watt is 66,000. Monohead studio strobes go easily to 1,200 Joules (also known as Watt.seconds or Ws, the micro version of kWh) each (generally using more time at full power: 1,200 Ws in 1/200 sec implies only 240,000 Watt - 2 F-stops more than the camera brand speedlight. Some studio strobes would release the 1,200 faster.)
