4 Shoot Through Umbrella Tips: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Shoot through or translucent umbrellas can be cheap, quick to set up and ultra portable light modifiers. Compared to just the basic flash, an umbrella can radically alter and dramatically improve your lighting and in this video photographer Gavin Hoey shows you exactly how it's done.
Starting with a simple lighting set-up that would work great for moving subjects (such as pet photography or fast moving kids) Gavin refines the position and power of his single umbrella and speedlight to get control over the light on his model and the background in his small home studio. In total Gavin shares four different looks that you can easily achieve using just one flash and a single shoot though umbrella.

Gavin you’re the best teacher I know
Gavin, I love your enthusiasm when introducing your models. Brings a smile to my face every time. Your tip about the distance from umbrella to speed light, and photographing the umbrella to ensure even coverage, was very helpful.
That's an amazing umbrella. Great video as always Mr. Hoey.
Amazing video as usual. Every time I learn something new here. Thanks Gavin for sharing such lovely video. Love from India.
This gavin hoey is a really good kind teacher and photographer
Always great to start the day with a Gavin Hoey video! Oh my..... that Charlotte!
Wonderful I like that someone has finally showed the great versatility of umbrellas!

Awesome video, and love that you are using basic equipment like umbrellas and speedlites. Thank you. 👍😀
Gavin for ever ! super. Merci
A superb single umbrella video. Thanks as always!
Excellent tutorial for those starting to get into lighting. Very helpful.
this is the best teaching about distance of light
Thank you so much for posting this, you are a very good teacher.
Gavin thank you, your video are always great and informative
Another great tutorial Gavin, thanks 👍
Best photography channel ever!
Thanks for making these videos. They are very informative and easy to learn from.
Brilliant walkthrough - thank you. This is really helpful.
Very good video. I use a shoot through all the time on location with a speed light. Thank you Gavin for producing these videos with practical real usages.
Many thanks. A much over-looked modifier, and nice to see your demonstrations including distance variations. I have been using them recently for on-location interior shoots where ease of set-up and weight were key.
amazing share. Thanks Gavin, you are my hero!
Excellent video as usual. Great information presented succinctly. Thank you for sharing.
Great video Gavin. I love soft lighting but at the end when you brought the light really close it gave a nice dramatic effect. Charlotte did great also.
Gavin, love the tip on photographing your umberals to get the maximum coverage of its surface! Brilliant!

Mate, I’m love your tutorials, answers sooooooo many questions. Keep up the great work
Thanks Gavin for the great tips, for years I've been learning new tips and tricks from you, you're the best 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow. That umbrella marking helped put so much.
Thank you for that video - extremely helpful and very informative. I'm learning so much and what you described as the distance of the flash to the umbrella is total news to me so that's very important
Love that brolly!
Sir ur work is AWsm am speechless..
Magnífico vídeo, me encanta la luz de las fotos. Gracias!!!
Great video as always Gavin. Lovely images 👍😊
Very helpful video! Some great information and a couple of new things for me to try, love the tip about marking the umbrella shaft. That make up and red jacket is on point, looks amazing against the grey.
So I’ve just bought a reflective umbrella so now need to see your video on that subject. If found it easier than a softbox if shooting indoors on location. Another great video. Thanks 👍🏻😀
This was a superb video. Thank you very much.
Gavin, great video again. Thanks.
Can't wait for your next video🤞🤞🤞 Love ur work😍😍❤
Great as usual Gavin.
Grazie per i tuoi video . Sei una fonte di ispirazione per me. 👍👍👍
super tuto ! good trick to photography the lighten surface !
You're the best man!!! Thanks!!
As someone just getting into photography this was extremely helpful! Also Charlotte is very stunning!
excellent tips thanks Gavin (again!)
I have all kinds of softboxes but I JUST got my first umbrella in last week (from Adorama, of course). Perfect timing for this video! (It's like they know)

Lotty looks amazing 🤩

Excelente profesor GavinH
2-light set-up using umbrellas to eliminate the shadows is a good follow-up video for this video
You’re the best !!
thanks a lot for this well made video about a very underrated type of light modifier ... well done !! ✨👍😊🍻
I did enjoy this video. Umbrellas were the first modifiers I bought. I'm glad you mentioned moving the speed light closer to the umbrella to get a harder almost directional light. Thanks for another great video!

As an umbrella fanboy I enjoyed watching this again! I rather fancy one of these umbrellas as often caught in low ceilings but I just discovered while in checkout on Adorama that they do not ship to the UK so Im looking at alternatives
Awesome video! Im happy you shared this as I find myself using shoot through and reflective umbrellas more than softboxes - maybe its the simplicity of setup and less space and weight and also the look they give that I like - I wasnt aware of that cropped version umbrella it would indeed be useful to get higher on low ceilings ill see how much of a dent in wallet it will be to get one shipped from usa!
Thank you again, Gavin for another piece of advice on how to achieve great results with minimal gear. The whole combination of Charlotte wearing red/black on a grey background is very pleasing. And another tip; don't throw away your umbrella(s), especially if you're in the UK!

Love the video. I was very interested in the EZ parabolic from Adorama till I got to the shipping cost! $50 for a brolly! Ouch! especially as I was going to use it with a Speedlight due to low budget. That to one side keep up the brilliant work, always love your videos they have taught me a lot.
Thanks, Gavin! Glad I didn't throw out my umbrellas once I started using softboxes
Interesting shape of umbrella. Good video, especially the last bit which had interesting drama.
@Tom_YouTube_stole_my_handle

The shape also has the advantage you can tilt it down more which can be a limitation with some shoot throughs, especially the parabolic kind.
I always have to just remember one thing before watching these - click like.
Anyone else wanted to see Charlotte's face when Gavin mentioned not wanting to stab her? BTW, another great tutorial from the Mastah!
Great tutorial (as always) The beauty of this tutorial though is that it demonstrates the sort of amazing results you can get with a $100 setup (Maybe a Yongnuo flash + trigger and Neewer Umbrella kit.) You don't need to spend thousands to do this.
This dude is Just awesome, rly Luv hin lmao
I loved this tutorial! Do you have one on how you made that awesome looking backdrop!?!?
The best educator I insist. Awesome umbrella! What model is that?
Thank you for the information as always great Video Creating beautiful work in a small home studio is always a challenge But I've learned so much I wish you could have made it to WPPI this year.

I have 3 umbrellas and 2 softboxes in my basement, but until Gavin Hoey came sky hooting over the horizon, had little idea how to use them! THANK You, Gavin! O.K., now where did I put those light stands?
Awesome video! Sometimes people use gaff tape to mark the side of the shaft that doesn't need to be pulled through the hole. :-)
Gavin, excellent video as usual. Is the ever a time when you would shoot through with a monolight?
Gavin, thanx a million for this great tutorial, but I don't understand why you want to consistently shoot at f4. Made me curious. What's the magic behind f4?
Hi Gavin, Great tutorial, do you mind tell me the ambient light condition in your studio at that time? as your camera setting was f/4 1/250th Sec 200iso. I just wonder if you had under exposure ambient light. Thanks
Hi Gavin, thank You for an awesome video again! The link provided gives the price for that wing-like umbrella 36$ and shipping starts at 60$. Could You also give links to the stuff You are using that us living in Europe could use?
Unfortunately i dont have a light meter yet. So how would I go about setting the proper exposure when using a speedlight and umbrella
Loved this video, and Gavin, just a phenomenal presenter. Even it is a video regarding shoot through umbrella, I dare to ask a reflective umbrella question. How much, if any, will that S-type bracket cause shadow / less light coming out of a reflective umbrella compared to having the speedlight directly on an umbrella adapter.
@GavinHoey
4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I suppose it would depend on the size of the umbrella.
Good morning Gavin,I'm Peter from Singapore, it that any more Live shows coming
I noticed that one side of Charlotte's face was smooth but the other side not. Is it the lighting or too much makeup? Is there anyway to even it out on both sides? Would butterfly lighting fix that, or is that going to be a PS/LR edit? What I can fix on shoot saves time in edit... GREAT video!
Where do you purchase the umbrella tips to shoot through... I've been trying to shoot through the umbrella tip but I have had better success shooting through the fabric portion of the umbrella (LOL)...
Did you have to edit these photos to make the background black like that?
Where did you get the case for the flash meter?
Dare I ask, when using a speed light or multiple speed lights, what is the difference between using a umbrella vs using a 4x6 soft box?
@leehargreaves7473
2 жыл бұрын
Softboxes don't reflect light backwards like a shoot-thru umbrella. All the light goes forwards.
thanks for your attractive jobs
What is the device your flash is mounted in? Not listed above. Thank you!
@Adorama

Great question! I will add it to the description. It is the "Glow S-Type Speedlite Bracket With Bowens S-Mount".
Great video as always. What happened to the post Gavin had about the benefits of hiring models? Saw that on his Instagram and thought that would be the next Adorama video. That wing umbrella is my next purchase. Sweet price drop on Adorama.
Another good video. Why do you favour ISO 200 instead of a 100 setting?
@GavinHoey
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank. 200 ISO is the native ISO for Olympus cameras. As a bonus it also cuts the power required from the flash by half compared to 100 ISO. So in a very small way I'm saving the planet one flash at a time 😉
