Why you need a Grid with your Softbox: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Softboxes come in all shapes and sizes but when you're looking at getting a new one there's one question you should ask. Does the softbox come with the option of a grid? At least that's what photographer Gavin Hoey thinks and in this video he shows you how and why he loves using softbox and grid combos when lighting portraits in his small home studio.
For Gavin there are three reasons why adding a grid is better then just a standard softbox. He uses the grid to control light bouncing off the walls in his small shooting space, he can add light to specific areas and create real vignette effects without the use of Lightroom or Photoshop. Keep watching to the end and you'll also discover Gavin's easy grid trick that opens up even more ways of working with grids.

1 - you are adorable 2 - a great teacher 3 - do great photots in impossible locations
Best online teacher ever. Always surprised with how you make an extra creative move in every video, like taking half of the grid on the softbox. Congratulations for every video.
Chloe is an absolute asset to you. Such a brilliant easy going model.
I never considered pulling half my grid off ... of course that kind of thing comes with experience. Wonderful video ... as ALWAYS Gavin!
Gavin, you're the best photo teacher there is. You simplify everything and make it so easy to understand.
And what a lovely day it is! A new video from Gavin Hoey! Thank you!!
It is always a great pleasure listening to you!
Thanks Gavin. Another a great instructional video. I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. All the best from the U.S.
Gavin, you are great! I have learned so much from you over the years. I feel like I should be paying you.
Absolutely had never thought of using a half-gridded softbox... thanks for this, Gavin!
Thank you Gavin, perfect timing and expertly done as always. Hope you are well, please keep safe.
I'm lucky enough to have a softbox with a grid but I never knew it was quite a flexible as this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Still one of my favourite KZread educators. Gavin's the man.
Gavin Hoey You are my light Obi-Wan (Gavin-Wan Kenobi!) Thank you so much for so many you share!
Love Gavin's presentation skills and he passes on good information.
Thank you so very much, always a pleasure to look at your so inspirational videos, I'm a fan!!
So smart and simple about the partial grid. Thanks for the idea!
Nice that girds are included or more affordable. I remember when a grid cost as much as a softbox. Thanks for the idea of peeling away part of the grid for more creative options.

I know the video is about grids..I love them. But my comment is about the use of the fan to create movement and visual interest in your images. I think it makes a huge difference. Great video as usual Gavin. Stay safe.

Thanks for the kind words David. Yes, it's amazing what a difference a fan can make to the shoot. My top tip is bring in the fan at the ens of the shoot... for fairly obvious reasons 😉
Oh my God Gavin, you are so fun to watch and your videos are very helpful! I laughed when you ripped off half of the grid at the end of the video to reveal the word “subscribe “. Brilliant! Thank you!
Brilliant work.
This video was really helpful, thank you so much!!! You have a new subscriber 👏🏼👋🏼
Thanks again gave, your tutorials are wonderfull.

Great tutorial Gavin, as always!!
Great video. Thank you
Beautiful video with such lovely ideas of using grids. You are amazing, Gavin. Love from India.
Great explanation 👏
Nice idea taking part of the grid down for the background must try it.
Thanks. I like the idea of using the grid on part of the box. Hadn't considered trying that.
Thank you Gavin. Excellent tutorial. I never thought of that you can half use your grid.
I love you Bro!!! thanks!!
Good stuff Gavin and stay well 😊
Great tutorial. My thought is that, it would be lot more effective, if the examples are shown side-by-side ( without and with grid ).
Great info and really well explained
Thanks Gavin for the always useful insights....I must say I have always bought lighting modifiers with the grid included...finding options for grids after purchase is sometimes difficult and always expensive. The Glow series from Adorama is a prime example of well-made and reasonably priced equipment that almost always includes a grid with whatever modifier you purchase. Stay well and safe!

Thank you for your demo. I am truly impressed with the quality of your OM-D E-M1 Mark 2. The images look very sharp and clean for a 4/3 sensor. Very good!

Thank but Shhh, don't tell any one this secret Brandon... Clean sharp studio photos have very little to do with the size of the sensor 😲

Wicked!
oh wow this was really helpful to understand. I was so confused with the honeycomb grid cause it looked like it doesn't do anything
Thank You!
Thank you!
You sneaked in some HSS there on the last shots... And I’m concerned about your smoke machine, it seems neglected lately! Keep making the great content! Thanks Gavin!
I love your videos Gavin! Pure pleasure to watch and learn from them. Can you recomend what equipment should buy for small home studio like yours, i mean the most useful and nessesary? Thanks in advance
