Comparing Homemade Marshmallow Fondant with Store-Bought Fondant | Which One Should You Use for Cake

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There's often a debate about whether homemade or store-bought fondant is better. If this were about a chocolate chip cookie it would be a no brainer! HOWEVER, fondant is a little bit of a different story...watch the video to see what I think!

I thought I had drunk a little too much wine....but I rewinded..and yea..I wasnt drunk! But I actually said "YEA! She makes mistakes too!" That gives me encouragement! I upload a video and I think I watched it like 100 times and made sure there was no mistakes, and how did I miss that? But it makes it real. And I actually think this could lead to something. You have really good feedback from this "mistake" already......So....maybe a bloopers video will be fun? Have you done one before?

I was waiting for this vid. Thank you. You must have uploaded while I was up late trying a truffle cake receipt and rewatching Pride and Prejudice. Yes, Jane Austin adaptations are great for baking. Boring enough to let you concentrate yet interesting enough to keep a midnight baker occupied. My Fondant journey started as was looking to buy a small amount to add a standing 17 to a cake I was making for my niece. I was in Walmart as my little town doesn't have any other source of premade fondant. The one bucket of fondant was about $30. I was down to my last $10. I remembered reading a Marshmellow receipt and left the store with a $1.97 bag of mini marshmallows and two bags of icing sugar at $1.97 sale price each. I had some Crisco already. I've been making my own ever since. Sometimes I felt a sense of accomplishment and other times I worried that I couldn't make a product as well as a bought product. Colouring my fondant Black was a challenge. I lot of food colouring later my fondant stayed sticky and a bit soft. Tylose powder and fondust ( from the link in your vid) are on the shopping list.

thanks for sharing your experience! i also have not made or worked with homemade fondant in LITERALLY about 20 years myself and just tried a batch of homemade last night and i can tell there’s going to be a reallll learning curve and some trial and error. so i’ll probably stick with the store bought too. yes, it can be sometimes a tad pricier and it tastes like absolute garbage 😂, but it’s consistent and does the job every time. minus the time to make it which is about as long as it takes me to go to the store, AND without the powdered sugar blanket that settles in my kitchen afterwards even after covering the mixer and being as tidy as possible. but you never know… marshmallow DOES taste better is maybe i’ll give another couple tries at homemade batches in the future when i’m not on such a tight deadline… but if i’m being realistic, WHEN AM I NOT RUSHING TO GET A CAKE OUT THE DOOR! 😂

I don’t know if I got a bad batch of the Satin Ice but i could not get over the smell of it. I could not bring myself to use it on my delicious cakes so ended up using it only for cake boards. I use a marshmallow fondant made with white chocolate and use fresh lemon juice instead of water.

I had the oppositte experience with Satin Ice. It tore, dried out and got elephant skin for me. I paint on fondant so I need a fondant that won't dry out so fast. For me, Sarecino brand is the absolute best. It's harder to find but well worth it.

But if customer is willing to pay for it, when we know aint nobody really eating that😂(before i started my little busines I'd see how almost everyone would TAKE OFF THE FONDANT ANYWAYS, only the kids it, than again id see parents not letting them sat all that sugar😂) i myslef dont, and I AM that LOVES SUGAR 😂. So, Again if the customer doesn't care about paying for FONDANT PRICE, THAN COOL, RIGHT. 🤗 But i myself for our cakes... working on perfecting that BUTTER CREAM SMOOTHNESS🤗.

I have done and used the marshmallow recipe from Sugar Geek and it has work great, but like others have commented I am too lazy sometimes. I have to tell you the Satin Ice has been the worst fondant, it breaks, cracks and the elephant skin drives me crazy. To tell you I prefer the Wilton is a lot to say🤷🏻‍♀️🙄. I have seen another person here i KZread that uses Satin Ice and it also looks great, I wonder if it is the one we have here in the USA. Thank you for the video!

I have never made marshmallow fondant icing. I’ve used the Satin & Wilton but definitely prefer the Satin. I prefer to make my own fondant from scratch but I don’t make cakes very often especially not these days. Unfortunately I haven’t been well enough in the last 9yrs to make any nice cakes. I made my mum’s wedding cake 10yrs ago and made the fondant for that. Fondant is popular on cakes and wedding cakes here in Australia but I think buttercream is on the rise. I’m really enjoying your channel, I only found it yesterday. I’m hoping to get back to baking once I’ve had surgery in the next 6 months.
