Comparing and Inspecting Ford Mustang 4.6 Forged and Cast Crankshaft

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I compare and inspect Ford 4.6 forged “Kellogg” and cast crankshafts.
See if you can count how many times I say “4.6”?
The cast crankshaft is actually a good option. I have personally built engines with the cast crank that made 650 hp
In the end, even in you feel you have a good crank, I recommend taking in to a machine shop to get polished. During that process they will also be able to tell you if it is bent or if it needs turned.

the windsor 2 valve 4.6 also had an 8 bolt flywheel flange.

so i have a question, my kellogg crankshaft from my mach 1 , is bad and i need to replaced but is very hard to find and expensive, is there another crankshaft similar to it that i can swap into it?

Yeah the Kellogg crank is getting hard to find, I would go with a Manley one. Or just use a non-forged one. The non-forged is actually pretty strong and it weighs less.

Hello JSR, Can you clarify on the Lincoln mark 8s? Years? Also how about the Lincoln continental they came with the 32v too? Please let me know, I would like to build my own engine but the only thing that stops me is how to properly install the 4 cams.

The 93-98 Lincoln Mark VIII have great donor engines for Mustangs. The Continental did have 32V engines and the heads will work on a Mustang but the engine block does not have the same transmission bolt pattern. I also have a video here on KZread where I set the cam timing on a 32V 4.6 to help with installing the cams.

@@JohnSmithRacing Thank you for your response great info! I have changed the timing chains on 32v engines and set time with no issues. I'm lacking of knowledge on how to install the cams and make sure they are set correctly? Do I install the cams using the guide dots on gear cams and crankshaft? I'm talking about stage 3 cams from cc. Maybe a video of how to install cam after delivery from ups using some stock components? And swap the important ones?? Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I see your library 👀 📖

Now what about the 99 00 gt cars that have 8 bolt cranks? Are they forged

As far as I know they are not forged. I have also heard that the 8 bolt non-forged crank was found in some other Ford SUV models.

Good to know, thanks for the advise, but these don’t come in the 96-04 gt. They come in the 96-98 cobras some 99-01 cobras and supposedly some mark 8 blocks came with the teksid blocks that came with these forged crankshafts

Yes, you are correct about the 96-04 GT not having the forged crank. The crankshaft on the left is a non-forged one and what I was trying to say in the video is that the non-forged 4.6 crank was found in nearly all other 4.6 cars, including 96-04 GT. Also, every 99-04 Cobra engine that I have disassembled had the forged Kellogg crankshaft, but there is always the possibility of exceptions.

@@JohnSmithRacing I had no idea the stock forged crankshafts in the cobras were kellog cranks,I want to forge my pistons and rods on my 96 cobra so I can run some boost. I also want to figure out how I can set my rev range to 8k rpm,I just love high revving small displacement v8’s especially the 4v 4.6,they sound insane past 7500rpm

@@petrolhead8851 If the crank in your 96 Cobra is factory it should be a forged one and can be revved to 8k rpm as long as it is balanced to the new rods and pistons. To rev that high you will also need to upgrade some of your valvetrain, mainly valve springs.

@@JohnSmithRacing I’ve also heard a limiting factor to revving these engines that high is getting rid of the stock intake manifold for something like a sullivan intake and also the stock pcm has a hard time letting your engine rev past 7k rpm,it’s just stuff I’ve read on the internet and forums but can’t say for sure it’s all true

@@petrolhead8851 I personally have not built a 4.6 to rev to 8k but I built several 2V that spin to over 7k. I wouldn't think the factory intake would be too much of a restriction at 8k but the only real way to tell is on a dyno. Maybe someone has numbers posted. Same with the PCM since that isn't too much over the factory rev limit. 9-10k might be a different story haha
