Thanks for the overview, I've pretty much settled on Zebco spin cast reels for the kayak fishing. For me spin cast reels are faster and much easier to handle in a small boat. While I have an Omega Pro filled with braid for heavy cover even the least expensive Zebco reels have worked well for me.

Hello I took notice to your comment on running braid on the omega pro , this worked out for you ? Because I could not get braid to cast at all in my omega pro ! Is there something I did wrong cause it cast a mile with floro or mono but I would much rather run braid .

Here in my neck of the woods we don't use that technique. Maybe someone who has used one for that, would comment. I recommend you comment on my Omega 154 video and see who responds. @@OutFishing13Matthew There's nothing to it. Set the drag as high as it goes. The line should come out freely when you pull on it, and the handle will spin when you pull on the line. ( just like a fish will when you hook it ) There's a lever you have to turn one way or the other so this works. If you pull on the line and it doesn't budge, flip the lever. Because the drag is already as high as it goes, you never have to adjust it when fighting a fish. ( You get really solid hook sets too ) When you hook a fish all you have to do is keep the tip up to pressure the fish. You are using the rod to fight the fish instead of the reel. When the fish surges, you don't have to worry about the drag because the reel is in free spool. Keep using the rod to pressure the fish. When the handle stops spinning, reel in. You know you have a good size fish hooked if it can spin the handle against the pressure of the rod tip. Do you really need to use the drag for crappie and bluegills or even a 12 inch bass? The real fun will be when you hook a fish that can spin the handle, like a 3 pound channel cat. You never had so much fun in your life. You can google backreeling vs drag to read more on the debate, but to me, there is no debate, I've backreeled every fish I ever caught. When I started fishing in my twenties, I remembered how there was two ways to use the reel. I was impatient to start and didn't want to get into all the details of setting the drag correctly, so I set the reel up to free spool and never looked back. Backreeling is considered to be old school, but before you dismiss it, ask yourself why are there two different ways to use the reel? They both work. You also have more control over the fish and it tires it out faster by backreeling. If you try this, please let me know what you think. It won't take long to get the hang of it. Keep trying until you hook that first one that can spin the handle. Super fun! Thanks for your reply and Merry Christmas!
