    An American friend of mine tried to cancel her Planet Fitness membership - she was told she could only do it in person, so she went to her local gym. Only to be told no, you have to go to your "club house" HQ (whatever that is). She then discovered the only one close to her was in another State.... two States over from hers. Which was well over a 13-hour drive ONE WAY to get to. In the end she contacted her bank who managed to get it cancelled that same day. I'm pretty sure that, since you can sign-up to Planet Fitness online, they are now legally required to allow you to cancel online too - and make it just as easy to cancel as it was to sign-up in the first place. SO yeah this demanding you do it in person is highly illegal. Shame there's no regulatory body in the US to oversee issues like this and bring the punishment hammer down on shady corporate actions.

    Fun Uplifting Story: In Scandinavia over the years many American companies have tried opening shop and not following Scandinavian laws or rules. @@elaexplorer I'm glad we have much better consumer protection laws over here. Charging you an extra month to cancel a subscription is straight up illegal, they can only charge you what you owe up until that point. Same with making people go somewhere or having them write a letter by snail mail. An email is just as valid. Also because we don't use credit cards here nearly as often it's much easier to just cancel their direct debit and back charge whatever they've overcharged. We did have a fitness club do the same thing during the covid lockdowns where they wouldn't let people cancel just because the lockdown prevented them from going to the gym. The public outrage was so massive that this fitness club now no longer exists because people would just charge back after sending them an email.

    On the booze menu with no prices: Some places even have it that way for the actual food. Leaving prices off is one way to convey the message "If you have to ask, you can't afford to eat here." Another trick is to have a price with no dollar sign out front and no ".99" or ".95" after it; IIRC, studies have shown that doing that sort of thing makes people less likely to really care about the price and just order whatever. These are more common at higher-end places.

  • @horsinacz

    @horsinacz

    Honestly, I find these so weird. Over here you are required to have all the items you are selling have their prices visible (like having price tags next to them or having a list with prices listed in the vicinity of the items) and can face some huge fines if the inspection finds out that a price of a certain item is not obvious or even not shown at all. So for example the fridge situation at 4:09 is super illegal as well as the cocktail menu at 17:10 I really don't understand why the USA doesn't pass some law to make this practice illegal, especially since it is such predatory behavior 😞

    "Fun" fact: Banks use a certain way of transaction processing when you have overdraft coverage. They have the higher priced items come first through the system. Lets say you buy a Plasma TV for 500$, carton of eggs for 20$ and a candy bar for 1$, and have 450$ in your account with a 25$ overdraft fee. No matter which order you buy these items, the 500$ TV is going first, with the 25$ fee, then the eggs, with the fee. Then the candy, with the fee. Even if you bought and purchased the candy bar and eggs first, to avoid those two getting the fees, the banks have the system reorganize the order to have you pay more fees.

    Well no. If you cancel the card but stay with the same bank, the bank will automatically transfer the charge to the new card. If you cancel the card and go to a different bank, then the membership amount, plus return payment charges, plus collection fees will be charged and the account will go into collections and be reported to the credit bureau as a bad debt. If they let the payment amount accrue enough then they can sue you to get that amount plus court fees. Went down to the local gas station one day because i felt too tired to take the 15-minute walk to the grocery store, spend another 15 minutes in line, and another 15-walking home. All i wanted was a frozen pizza. Some chips and dip and a 2liter of ginger ale. There were no prices posted on the shelves or on the products. Which i'm pretty sure is against state law. Got up to the register and the clerk told me my total was $22.00.👀 Nope never again. I don't care how exhausted or sick I am. I'm not paying that kind money to save 35 minutes of my time.

    03:03 Italian olive oil is even different between north to south, if you buy it from the farmer or the oil manufacture who doesn’t sell tho grocery stores. In the south it has a more “spicy” flavour, more intense and it will make your throat itch when fresh, even after few months. From central Italy until north it’s less violent and more delicate. I prefer the more spicy one because it’s an everyday experience and it’s says that’s even an aphrodisiac. Ps. An Italian inside joke is that the people from south are bigger down in the pants and last longer, maybe because of the extravergin oil?

I already have very little space on my phone, so it's incredibly frustrating to deal with it. Oh, and even better; after sitting through an entire ad (Mistplay is a complete asshole and keeps pushing the limit to 40-50+ seconds), you have to sit on that death trap screen for 30 SECONDS before the tiny ass X appears. I actually sat and counted one day because I was so tired and pissed off about that awful screen, and combining that with a Mistplay ad, that is well over a minute of your time and phone being held hostage by scammy god-awful apps' advertising I can't figure out how to stop those kinds of ads, either

    We have plenty to moan about in the UK, but at least our consumer laws mean a lot of these things wouldn't pass muster here. For instance, "if the average consumer is likely to be misled" (a common phrase they use) by the numbering on packaging (like 40g x 10 with a big '40'), the regulations would not allow it. Also, I believe there's a law that you must be able to cancel a service by the same means that you signed up for it, at the very least. So if you get gym membership via a website, that's where you cancel, too.

And vice versa, I wouldn’t be surprised if police officers signing up would well-qualify for Pre-Check, even though the police officer is in a de-facto “hate group” and has the community they work at outraged at the person’s conduct in their role, because the government sees “Official Police Officer” papers and numbers and does not look further into it.

    Remote start is technically illegal to use in most states/territories in Aus, you're not allowed to have an unattended vehicle running, definitions of "unattended" can vary but a particularly pedantic cop or council ranger might ticket you for not being with arm's reach of the vehicle when it's running.
