Compairing 5 sets of Jazz cymbals

Музыка

Here you can see and hear me plaing 5 different sets of Jazz cymbals.
Each one consists of 2 Ride cymbals and a pair of hihats and has been put together with a certain "theme" in mind.
First therealways is a recording of the cymbals seperately, and then I´m playing them along to a part of the song "The Al Trane", written by John Riley and taken from his book "the art of Bop drumming".
The recording has been done with two overheads and one bassdrum microphone and I´ve not used any effects or other sound treatement to capture the sounds of the cymbals as naturally as possible. Also all the levels (including the play alongs´) are exaxtly the same for each set of cymbals. Therefore you can not only compair their sounds, but also their volume. I´ve used the same sticks all the time and tried to play with the same intensity.
Hope you like it...

Finally someone who can play cymbals demoing cymbals. You'd think it would be more common but apparently not. You made all of those cymbals sound good. Each one. That sound lab prototype was beautiful. Thanks for this.

The modern Ks were my personal favorite, I really dig the renaissance 22 ride, and that prototype has a great sort of trashy vibe - not to mention that I am a fan of dry dirty hats. The Hollow Block Stamp 20 ride on the Motian set was really nice as well. Great playing and feel as well.

Quiet set sounds great. Hard to find those hats though. I have the 22” K Con REN on the right. A 20” K Con medium thin low on the left. And 14” A Avedis hi hats. I love it. I sometimes use a 20” light flat ride on the left.

Enjoyed the playing and the presentation. Great drummer w/ great time and chops. And these cymbal sets all sound good and provide a tonal palette from wet to dry. What everyone tunes in for is the vintage, unobtanium stuff. The third set - old k's with johan hats. Most of the rest of the stuff is in a store somewhere. But everybody's chasing THAT tone. You have two KILLER vintage cymbals but they are totally different. The 18 OS is darkly bright and crisp without a lot of wash, and the 22 NS with the rivets is holy grail jazz ride sound with good medium bright attack and just a hint of trash followed by the rivet wash reverb. They are both amazing, but I'm not sure the 18 complements the 22 like it would some other rides in your collection. Don't get me wrong, the 18 might be the best, most valuable cymbal in your collection. It probably is. Your Zildjian 20 hollow block stamp from set 4 and your 18 OS from set 3 would be interesting to swap between sets and compare. Some amazing cymbals throughout. Congrats mate
