Ive been working with traumatized adolescents and adults for many yrs, some of them antisocial on different levels, many of them done misdemeanors or some other more serious crimes and offenses. Ive done hundreds of "interviews" and conversations with them. I have to say that his apology-speech definitely seems reversed and far from being natural. I think that, that particular aspect is striking. He's looking for the right words, so to speak, trying to remember the right words far too much. Its interesting how my perception can differ so radically from the Communication-coach Alex Lyon.

It's EXTREMELY important that when you are apologizing to utter the words, "I am sorry." Not, "I apologize" or anything else. In his speech, when he addresses Jada, he immediately and without hesitation says, "I'm sorry babe." That was a genuine apology. When he is addressing Chris he has to enter a preamble and build up the courage to even say, "I apologize." A genuine apology to Chris would have came out within the first two sentences and would have sounded something like, "I'm sorry Chris. I messed up." Like he did towards Jada.

@@alexanderlyon I feel like its important to a) Say I am sorry b) Say it within the first two sentences c) Issue an apology within a reasonable time period from the occurrence of the incident. Chris probably trusted that Will would make amends quickly and did not press charges because he had faith in him. He waited patiently and the apology ship sailed. Chris has moved on with his life and it ended the way it ended. IMO, Will's biggest problem is not Chris accepting his apology, it is regaining the trust of the people he violated that night. His actions were extremely deliberate and violent. He evoked powerful, traumatic emotions in people around the globe. Bullying and workplace violence... many people have personal experience with these things.

@@alexanderlyon “I apologise” sounds formal and as if you’re just going through the motions. It implies a certain distance from the offending actions. On the other hand, ‘I’m sorry” sounds much more personal and vulnerable. I think it’s because of the “am”, ie it’s saying I FEEL sorry, whereas the “I apologise” uses an active verb which says nothing about the person’s feelings. I was expecting a deep analysis, but left feeling like I just watched a power point presentation. Anyone can write an apology that checks all the boxes, especially a multi millionaire with a PR team. What about the words he used, the tone, the pitch of his voice? I think she showed more remorse for all the other people present there at that moment, than for CR. He didn't disrupt their moment of fame, the program just continued as if nothing happend. No one ran on stage to help CR, no one asked Will to leave. They laughed and gave him standing ovation minutes after he slapped a man over a joke and then called himself a vessel of love, called by God to protect his people. That's beyond ridiculous.

It's the height of arrogance and unprofessional conduct and sends a message to others that assault and public humiliation are ok. And over some words??! He didn't hit you bro, he hit Chris and it's a problem for these two men to handle. Let men handle their business and stop being so damn sensitive. Also, he apologized to Chris before mentioning his own family, looking right into the camera when he did. How much more sincere does this man have to be. He hit a man, he didn't rape a child. Not only that but he tries to make Chris look bad by saying he didn’t want to talk to Will. An authentic apology doesn’t mention anything about the other person and what they have or haven’t done. If Will had focused solely on himself and just said he was sorry and he will always regret my behavior because violence is never the answer he’d have been good. I can see in wills eyes his disdain for Chris and he doesn’t mean what he is saying. Let me remind everyone that actors are paid liars. They are the best liars in the world next to spy’s that engage in espionage where their life’s are on the line. An actors job is to portray a lie so well that the audience believes they are who they transform into. Look into the words Will uses, how he uses them, his tone of voice changes, which we can hear him at the beginning change from low to high pitch momentarily which is a sign of lying, especially when he says Chris the first few times. Lastly. The micro expressions on his face which he cannot control and the look in his eyes. Everyone speaks with their eyes, only a few can conceal what they really mean with their eyes.

I disagree, for two reasons: One, when apologizing, it's really important to actually say that word, and mean it. It was powerful to me that Will did that within the first few moments. And two, "forgive me" is putting the wronged person in the position of having to take action they may not be ready for. Chris doesn't need to forgive Will if he doesn't want to, so asking him to do so (especially publicly) would come off as slightly passive-aggressive. I'm very glad Will didn't do it that way.

Also, I don't think anyone really expects Chris to forgive Will anytime soon. But asking for forgiveness would have meant that Will truly values Chris's friendship, and it would have demonstrated genuine humility on Will's part. The fact that he never said "I'm sorry" and "forgive me" is why I'm not buying his "apology". Here, I'll reword my original comment and you tell me if you still think "I apologize" is better: "Chris, I am so sorry for the pain I've caused you and your family. In Will's case, his mistake was not that he acted on impulse and had an oops moment, rather his mistake was that at the time he believed he was doing the right thing for his wife. It took cancel culture and falling out of grace with public opinion for him to realise the world has evolved and violence is no longer an acceptable response when someone hurts someone we love. I’ve watched many of your videos and found them to be insightful and Taught me things. That is why I’m asking you to watch the “apology video” again and see if you can see the other side of it. For me it lost credibility in the first sentences. If Will had reached out to Chris to apologize and Chris had said it was too early - to then go public and make an “apology” video is disrespectful and wrong. Chris has said it’s not the right time. Right from the start that tells me that this video is all about Will. About his image and how other ppl perceive him. He even states this in the video. It hurts him that other ppl don’t think that he hasn’t lived up to their image of him. No. Wrong. The problem is that HE assaulted someone else in front of millions of ppl. And refused to leave. It wasn’t “fuzzy” when he made his acceptance speech. He apologized etc - but NOT to Chris. He went to the after party. I can understand if you’re chocked in the moment if you did something like this. But that instant chock wears off before the party. Or the last 3 months at least. Note that Willl says it wasn’t the “optimal” way to respond. That implies that it’s A (acceptable) way to respond when being “insulted”, not just the “optimal”. No. It’s illegal to do that. It’s also morally wrong. Will doesn’t take responsibility for what he’s done. He goes against what Chris had told him - to wait. He doesn’t say: I’m so sorry for what I did. There is nothing I can say that excuses my behavior, it was just wrong. I own this. (And that apology would come AFTER Chris said it was time). It’s easy to get drawn in when someone has a whole PR-team and when they are as good of an actor as Will is. But listen to what he says, the words he chooses and maybe most of all what he doesn’t say. Please have a look at this video again. I’d love to hear your take on it, because I think this was released prematurely. Your expertise is deeper than this. See beyond the PR-team and the actor. I like Will. Or I at least used to. But I don’t condone what he did OR this video. I think it was self serving and against Chris’s wishes. And I also think Will needs to “heal” away from the toxic environment of his marriage, but that is just my opinion (like everything else in this comment). I wrote it out of respect, because I think you missed things in this video that I hope you could make a follow-up video about. All the best.

He is authentic and sincere when he says he is sorry to his own family and to Questlove. He is not authentic or truly remorseful at the beginning when he is "apologizing" to Chris Rock. The phrase "I apologize" is a distancing technique. The sincere and genuine phrase to use is "I'm sorry." Will Smith also should feel shame for his actions. By rejecting a sense of shame he is also distancing himself from any true consideration of what he did and the true repercussions of his actions. This is a public relations statement, a social media ploy, not a sincere apology to Chris Rock. Will Smith should never talk about this again publicly until he has sat down with Chris Rock and apologized to him personally, face-to-face. And that should happen when Chris Rock is ready for it to happen.

I felt completely different. The entire apology reflected as sincere to me. I don’t think it’s fair that folks get to stand on their white horse and decide whether or not someone’s heart felt apology is sincere after months of considering it. Every comment I read about his authentic and well spoken apology is coming from a space of arrogance. He is a human being not a god who does no wrong because he is a celebrity. Put him in the proper place in your eyes, as a human seeing eye to eye and then listen to the apology. Obviously there was tension when apologizing to Chris, as they haven’t discussed privately yet and as he stated there is unfinished business between them. That’s not our business.

He kind of glossed over his apology to Chris and 1. Made it Chris' fault that he wasn't ready to talk yet 2. Made it Chris fault because he felt insulted 3. Minimized it by calling it "not optimal" and 4. Showed more concern for his public reputation than the real harm he caused to Chris. He did sound authentic when he apologized to Chris' mother and to the other Oscar nominees, but IMO his apology to Chris was lame.

His emphasis being on having let people down and not having failed Chris Rock, says the apology is more about the public than it is about Chris Rock. Which obviously to me this is PR. When it was mentioned later it was vicarious, distilled via the social media question and, in my opinion, lacking the impact it could have had. Will is a good guy, a good guy who's human. He let his emotions get the best of him. What he did was wrong, undeniably. He publicly assaulted Chris Rock for making a joke, something Rock was actually paid to stand up there and do. It would be more meaningful if Smith went to anger management classes or otherwise did something to atone for his action, but this apology is certainly a good first step. It means something to me to see him make this effort. So many people don't even do this much and admit they were wrong. He's demonstrating remorse and regret, and that at least is good. I think Smith should be grateful Rock has not pursued legal matters against him, as assault is a crime, and I hope he truly is re-evaluating how he handles situations and getting help to do better in the future. We all make mistakes. I can't judge Smith for what he did; it's not my place. I acknowledge it was a crime and he should not have done it. I do think he is a good guy who did a bad thing, and I hope in time he will prove he's trustworthy again to behave at public events and not cause harm to others like this. This is not an apology video it is a career saving production. If you think this was a "Great apology through and through" then you are just enamored by production gimmicks.

Two observations: As Alexander points out, it is true that "this is the first time that he has mentioned the word 'slap'." This suggests he finally has at least some appreciation of the actual offense he is apologizing for. Secondly, his statement that "There is no part of me that thinks that's the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect or insults." While he seems now to understand that his physical action was an inappropriate response to his feelings, his perception that what Chris said was "disrespect or insults" appears to be a blind spot still. What Chris said was neither an insult nor disrespect. It was a joke - and one which had nothing to do with what Will thought it did.

My heart breaks for him. I have seen the interview with jada and noticed the issues in his family as things have fallen apart. You can see he is falling apart inside and not sure how to gain control of himself. I want to see him actually stand up for himself. It is not mine to forgive. That is up to Rock and his family. I think we just witnessed a man break down in front of us.

  • @JD.727

What about Chris Rock? Or is breaking down only worthy of sympathy when it's documented for us to see? The fact that we are witnesses to this "breakdown" as it is unfolding in front of cameras to be viewed publically, devalues it. Or it does for me anyway. I definitely see a man who feels real fear and remorse and is trying to actively solve what he's done. I just don't buy that it has anything to do with Chris Rock at all. I think he is not finished with a career that he worries might be finished with him and is desperately doing damage control. CR chose not to participate in that. Maybe he didn't want to give him a chance to claim he'd made an apology and feel pressure to accept when he's not ready, maybe he's still hurt, maybe he is just trying to move on. Whatever the reason is, the show has gone on without his involvement. That says to me that CR is not the focus of the reparations Will Smith wants to make. Hollywood is. The internet is. His reputation is. We are.

  • @Brandon-fv5sm

@@JD.727 I can see your point. I don’t know if it devalues it for me but I do find it sad. I was only looking at Smith because he is the one issuing the apology and I can totally see what you are saying. The issue with CR is totally separate in many ways. I think what we are witnessing is Smith’s own break down and he did it in front of everyone. I would not be surprised if CR chose to just stay out of all this and let Smith figure his own crap out. And I would understand why too. I don’t think he needs to do anything unless he wants to address it on his own terms. I actually admire the way he has handled it. Just let Smith sink or swim on his own.

  • @JD.727

    @JD.727

@@Brandon-fv5sm Totally agree. A lot of it is sad. Even the fact that such a sincere sounding apology brings suspicion that it's some kind of tactic is sad. Who knows how much is genuine and what his motivations are? Maybe he doesn't even know. When you perform your whole life, I wonder if it makes it hard to identify your real feelings vs the feelings you are expected to perform. And then if you are good at masking your personal emotions, do you then have to relearn how to identify and then perform those so they seem as genuine as they are? The whole industry seems fairly toxic. That being said, this is definitely a well crafted video, from the light directly behind his head giving him a halo, to the all white hat and tshirt. I do feel manipulated into feeling a certain way, just like he does in character, and like actors often are by their industry. Idk about you, but this just seems like a good reminder not to feel too attached to celebrities and be very thankful I'm not one.

I still think Will Smith should have given Chris the most significant focal point of an apology. For actors and comedians, the fans are the most essential part of their carrier, so letting them down affects their future success. I don't know how Will Smith will make up the situation, he should think about Chris' future carrier as a standing-up comedian. I think that people in the comments are overreacting, tbh. I believe he absolutely is sorry for how he handled the situation, he knows that the choice to be physical was a mistake. He was more genuine when apologizing to Chris's family, and to his family, and to his fans than he was when apologizing to Chris. But he was still genuine. It's clear he feels he has a history with Chris Rock that is likely negative, and that he genuinely felt very angry and protective of his wife for a (potentially good) reason. So yeah, there's some mild reservation in his apology to Chris Rock, but it was still genuine. He knows he did the wrong thing and it was out of character to begin with, so it's very unlikely he'll ever repeat that behaviour. Is he sorry for defending his wife at all, probably not, does he feel Rock is void of any wrongdoing, probably not, but he is definitely sorry for choosing violence instead of words. What else do people want? Yeah, he screwed up a lot with this single event. The thing about celebrities is when they hit a breaking point we often get to see them at their worst, but he knows it was wrong and shows loads of markers of regret and compassion.

He may have had dozens of people aid him in the preparation and execution of this video apology. Of course a Crisis Mgmt expert, and a celebrity PR Rep, and a Script/ screen writer, and a Producer/ Director can create a near flawless output. Then the Actor just has to deliver the lines. Yes. Smith is a victim and Jada is the abuser. She is mentally and emotionally abusive. But I don't think Smith realizes he's in a toxic relationship or that he is the victim in that relationship.

@@call_in_sick which is why I said in paragraph two that it in no way justified Will's behavior. I'm not saying they were both victims on that night, just that when I see Will Smith I also see a victim. Jada continuously humiliates Will and shits on his attempts at pleasing her. It's truly painful to see.

I was looking for something along the lines of "I should not have physically attacked Chris, and should have been arrested that night." Yet he still seems to skirt his violent behavior. The fact that he said "I" so many times just gives me narrasistic vibes. His actions were so disgusting and embarrassing that night, it's hard to get past it. I don't wish him to be black listed from Hollywood, but he needs to suffer for a while longer imo.

I’m a Will Smith fan and I’m still a little disappointed at him not being able to control himself, but I will say that what he said about about trying to “be remorseful without being ashamed” of himself really resonated with me. I have felt that in my own life, and I understand it. When it comes down to it, I believe everything that he said in this video and I give him credit for it, too. It might take a little bit, but I can see him finding his way back into people’s hearts eventually. ps I do think that he should’ve been escorted out of the Oscars immediately, and I agree with the 10 year ban. When someone does something like this, there should be repercussions, if only to discourage others from that kind of behavior in the future. They can’t let things like this slide.

This 'apology' or better said...this effort to keep himself relevant and/or revive his career, is coming far too late!!! C'mon!!! Heartfelt or not it's just too late no matter how sincere. The apology can be appreciated and all can and should be forgiven if requested but at this point an apology is just an effort save himself. Nauseating what transpired that night...Will, Jada and their son who went to social media so proudly afterward as well as those who backed this horrendous act of ego and cowardly behavior. Huge Will Smith fan here and he is human but this is just too late...too late!

Alex, I watched the most recent documentaries that Will has done. When Will was losing weight and writing his book it showed him at his all time low. This apology is 100% coming from Will's heart. He made a major mistake infront of the world and is owning up to it. From my personal life experiences I used to party and drink a bunch before I retired from the Military. I was hiding my PTSD with Alcohol. After I stopped drinking I thought about how I acted and apologized to friends and family. They asked me if I was in AA or had gotten into trouble. I told them no and I couldn't stop thinking how I used alcohol to hide from my personal demons. For me I love life more than ever and want the best for both my wife and son. We all make mistakes, owning up to them is extremely hard. But after you bring them to light it lifts so much weight off your shoulders. Thank you for everything you do.

Had I been Chris Rock, it would take me YEARS to forgive and forget, despite this beautiful apology. I see this slap as such a huge insult for Chris Rock, and such a wrecking ball for the other nominees whose once-in-a-lifetime experience was tarnished forever, that nothing Smith will say can soften the blow. It'll take YEARS. Only a long time will heal them.

Seriously? What insult is it to be compared to Demi Moore at her most fabulous and fit body and face? Jada shaves her head ... just like Demi did for GI Jane. With alopecia sufferers hair comes out in clumps and leaves shiny bald spots that never grow hair again. Jada has stubble, not shiny great hairless bits.

So, his sincerity seems undeniable. On the other hand: 1. I believe le likely had the questions in advance. 2. He communicated like he did not have the questions in advance. "ummm" 3. He is a great actor. So, I'm conflicted in my belief of his sincerity. As far as the Alex's video goes: It serves Alex purpose either way.
