Common Traits Found in Talented Beginner Fighters

Спорт

Some key things and individual qualities that boxing coaches and fighting coaches notice in talented beginner boxers and fighters. It's often in their attitude, approach, confidence, natural movement, learning capacity, and willingness to put aside their ego....and a lot of hard work ethic. It's seeing a combination of these qualities in beginner boxers that make coaches feel they have potential.
I also go over the overrated qualities in beginners such as power and intelligence. Although those are extremely important, there are also many more variables that can make an even bigger difference.

Kled Kleddy You can't call someone an idiot when his / her reasons for disagreeing with something are genuine. You become the actual idiot by doing that because you didn't took the time to understand as to "why" that certain person is disagreeing with something and just simply proceeded to calling him / her an idiot all because he / she disagreed with something you liked.

I taught myself the basics of boxing at home for a year just by watching youtube videos. Then i went to a boxing gym, the first day the coach said i have fast hands and good punches. Second day the guy who had the pads said that i had a really good jab, then i was offered a fight for the next month (this is very recent). It just goes to show that you can learn a lot on your own. I'm 15 and I want to be a heavyweight champion, but for now I'm training for my upcoming amateur debut.

A lot of people are misinterpreting the 1st point by the way he says it in the terms of "getting into a lot of fights" that doesn't mean you're aching to fight recklessly. Think of it more as you have "Fighting Spirit" you have the ability to turn on your inner warrior. But the opposite is also very very true, you must stay reserved, calm and level headed; even when you're aggressive, you have to stay reserved to properly defend yourself and minimize damage done to YOURSELF. That's why he talks about not OVER analyzing things, and to just be in the moment. Stay powerful and aggressive, but stay smart and tactical as well, learn your moments. And call upon the moment to truly go into your fight mode, but know that fighting isn't just about destroying your opponent, it's all about defending yourself.

Against aggressive fighters, I just keep my guard up and try to anticipate shots to block or weave them. As soon as his punch touches my forearm after a block, I immediately throw counter hooks back at him. I also stay pretty close to smother his shots. After about a minute and half, the guy usually gets gassed and that's when I start throwing combinations. Works most of the time if the other guy has really shitty endurance

  • @damianson56

+Erskain Alvarado I agree, with above dude, aggressive fighters are used to pushing people back as well, don't be scared to get hit and stand your ground and throw counters at them, this can throw them off their game. Try to outsmart them after making them respect your hits, throw feints and punish them for moving forward aggressively. Of course this is easier said than done over the net, but it's what i try to do when i spar. Have fun and be relaxed!

Fighting for me, I see it as a spiritual experience. It really humbles you, if you're a beginner. Sparring with others who are more experienced really shows, they land more technical punches than you, always. You might think you're all big and bad, but when you get choked out by someone half your size, you lose that attitude real quick.

I love the aspect when a coach believes in you. If you truly want to be a fighter you have to totally commit to the process. Between wanting the experience to make you better, achieving a skill, putting in the hard HARD asf work, and thinking of the things that make you want to keep going when you are in that in between of failing/giving up and keep going/going for the win. It’s just one of the most rewarding experience in this life ever. I absolutely love boxing for the ART it is. It truly makes you a smarter person.

I always love fight , since I was in elementary school I like it , I was always victim of bullying thats was the reason I loved the idea of defending myself, but my personality doesn't help much ... I'm a shy and insecure person , my coach say :« You have to be more malicious» .... I Like the idea of fight but sometimes my mind and my personality don't help me fight well , and is awkward when a talented beginner arrives , I think they have that personality that i don't have , I really like to have this type of personality.

I have one little issue with your first point. You seem to equate natural fighters to people who aren't afraid of confrontation or fighting. I naturally don't like either. However, as I've matured and trained myself mentally, I'm no longer afraid to confront someone I have a problem with, and I certainly would do my best to knock an AGGRESSOR's lights out. That being said, I am still naturally a DEFENDER and a peacemaker personality-wise. I'm a very chill and relaxed guy. Is this going to make a trainer not want me from the start? Should I worry about that as long as I show my passion for boxing to my trainer? I have been training to be aggressive and domineering in my boxing style.

Insightful video. Random question btw, but I think you may answer it here, as you are reading the more recent comments, I am hyperexteding my elbow on most of my punches especially my snapping right crosses. It is popping and I can feel it slipping out of my comfortable range of motion. I am worried I am harming it, will it go away as the area strengthens or should I seek a different solution such as exercises to target the area?

I tried 3 different classes/coaches and his style suits me the best, so i want to keep going to his classes most often, but i always thought it won't be bad to occasionally show up to a different class to see what other possibilities my opponents can use against me.

I have the athletic background, I'm fairly sure I have the motivation, I have great respect for the art, and whenever I'm with a coach I pretty much just forget and absorb whatever they say as sacred... but I'm NOT a natural fighter... the whole reason I decided on boxing was because it seemed to be an effective defensive art for most realistic scenarios.

The best thing for "realistic scenarios" is MMA without a doubt. Why limit ur self to only ur hands when there's no rules in the street? Would be better to effectively use everything, would it not? 🤔 Edit: MMA can also include boxing. You'd just be better off to learn that on top of kicks and grappling, etc. That's much more realistic if we're talking defending ur self in a "realistic scenario".

Good advice bro but I didn't agree with the 'mistake' that people over-think. Obviously focus on the moment is the most important thing, but some of the greatest boxers are the ones who stay one step ahead of their opponent by second-guessing the next move. You need to think about the combinations he's throwing your way and his habits. Especially at a beginner level, (where combinations and habits) are more basic you will have the upper hand if you work out his routines, wait for the trigger, and then counter

I have this weird talent of being good at mimicking and learning that way. You can give me pointers on how to do something and I will not improve much, but if you show it instead, I tend to analyze it and I can learn much faster in comparison to what most people get out of it. It's not just a boxing thing either, it's been a knack for just about anything, including something that's not really physical like flippin' architecture projects. People have been calling me a robot because of it, and I love it. ...In this case though, it's also a weakness. In some other sports (basketball for instance) it can be ridiculously handy. A bit less so in boxing I'm afraid. I may be able to mimic muscle movements and styles and swap em into my own, but I'm an over analyzing derp when it boils down to it and, even though if only for a slight moment, it can cause hesitation.

I would have to agree with you. About "smart guy" well im a girl but I do good work on the heavy bag, Mitts, I have power. But once I get in the ring to spar I paralyze myself I overthink, try to do everything perfect and I can't execute any combinations, I can't seem ti combine training in the ring I don't move too much I get fustrated easily and show it. But I love it and keep coming back to try and improve and learn more. Would you recommend anything in improving reflex? I can take hits but i freeze too much and don't see some punches coming

It's hard to train yourself because you can't learn the technique as well or see your mistakes. But if you must, then here's what you do: Watch videos on how to punch, dodge, etc. Record yourself while you practice alone or with friends that way you can see if you did anything wrong Find friends that will help you, like with mitts or with sparring Maize bags will help with learning how to dodge punches (research if you don't know what it is) you can usually make it home made Heavy bag and speed bag can be used for conditioning. I recommend joining a gym, good luck

My traits are a bit odd and contradictory to some statements. I love to fight, but at the same time, I don't like to hurt people. I don't tend to play defensively and am a bit aggressive but will fight when I have to. Shadow boxing is one of my favorite things to do and apparently, my form is really good from what I've heard, however at the same time, I am reluctant to hit someone too hard and attempt to restrain myself. Yet at the same time, I have an odd love for fighting. How would I be defined? Also, I'm not fond of playing too defensively.

Yeah. What a lot of people don't realize is, getting in a fight is not as fun as it seems. Yeah, the glamour of the cage seems great, but taking a real blow is not fun to most people. Those people do it because they want to and are a few who have the urge to release in this way or show a passion for it.

I know exactly how you feel. I just started on boxing training and I love the whole idea of training and practicing the punches but when it comes to sparring or practicing with a partner. I end up stopping short with my blows instead of bursting like I usually do. I don't want to hurt someone, although I know I probably won't do much to my more experienced coach(who spars with almost everyone in the class) , I'm just too meek/pacifistic to go all out. Maybe in a fight or die situation. Idk.

That means u shouldn't be thinking about using it to be aggressive. 😉 U over thinking it and probably think "I'm way more dangerous than I thought 😱" until the right person puts u in ur place. I'm telling u this 'cause that's how I was when I started in karate, but I got humbled pretty quick (in the SAME day I started). 🤣 If ur gonna learn, do it because u love it or wanna be able to defend ur self IF the situation ever arrises. The more u practice, u will overcome that mental barrier for sure. Just can't overthink everything.

You can tell the difference between an athlete who trains to fight and a natural fighter who isn't afraid to be hit. Their true heart shows when they get hit and see their own blood. Everyone and their mom tries to teach you "proper" technique but instead of shutting them out just be open and if it doesn't make sense don't use it.
