Jab Without Getting Countered
Спорт
The basic boxing technique and fighting strategy to help you throw jabs confidently without getting countered. It's often said that the jab is the most important punch in boxing but it's incredibly terrifying to throw this punch when your opponent could counter you with a huge right hand or big hook. But then how are you going to setup your own big punches when you're too scared to throw the jab? I've put together some helpful tips to get you feeling more comfortable with letting go of the jab and punishing your opponent when he tries to counter it.
00:00 - Intro
00:30 - Commit to the jab
01:06 - Chin behind your shoulder
01:50 - Step with your jab
02:14 - Prepare a counter
02:39 - Use the right glove to block the right hand
03:25 - Pay attention

My son has been boxing for only 7 months and he is doing amazing. I asked him what made him want to do boxing and he said the I inspired him. He's 13 years old now
Really basic, fundamental stuff. Great for beginners; excellent refresher for pros 👍👍👍

Once again a great job done by you. Thanks
I really needed this help. Thank you.
Great tips, once again!
Great tips! Thank you.
Great video! Really helpful
Great video as always ! Thank you
Great vids, really helped me, keep it up!
The fifth thing you talked about Johnny, the blocking with the right hand with throwing the jab. I see Gennady Golovkin do this consistently. Not necessarily one after the other, but he does do it a lot and no one has an immediate answer for it. Just thought that was an interesting point to note. Great video!
Dude, you rock! Thanks for all the great advice! I do jiu jitsu which im pretty good at but I just started boxing and I suck. Glad to have found you!
Very good lesson ...definitely impressive

expertboxing Naz got exposed by Barrera, when he punched he could fall off-balance and be caught with counters by someone like Marco because he was an exellent counter puncher. Larry Merchant said Barrera`s reaction when an opponent punched at him was amazingly quick like Ray Leonard who Larry said reacted quicker to punches than anyone he had seen previously!
@expertboxing

I don't believe Barrera to be more talented or have better technique than Naseem. Styles make fights. And sometimes a textbook style like Barrera shuts out a wild unorthodox style like Naseem. But then it can come around again when a wild unorthodox style like Pacquiao comes around and beats Barrera's textbook style. Pacquiao was "off-balance" a lot when he punched, too.
Great vid bro, Inspired some ideas
Thank you sir

or get your opponent used to a rhythm with your jab, then faint a jab with a quick in-and-out and then light him up when you're set on your feet. for this technique you would need to be decent at controlling distance though.
Figured this out the hard way :D
OK cool, I already cover my chin with my shoulder ....I was worried I was missing a trick here. Thanks Johnny.
I spar with my friends and i got hit because i didnt raise my hand to my chin and thx for this video it helps me alot

Hey Johnny, you should make a future video regarding how to use the jab effectively. I watched this one guy taught the concepts accurately, but his demonstration was incorrect. Please Johnny crush these wannabes!

The videos are great. How about including an opponent so we can see how it actually works?
Stepping or changing angles with the jab and covering the chin with the right hand are the best ways imo
@expertboxing
Жыл бұрын
That works as well.
Why exactly would you not recommend the number 5? I move the right glove in the way of predicted on-comming punches nearly all the time.
👍
Different hair, same great stuff!
Idk if you did a video on this yet but can you please do a video on what to do if your opponent keeps his hand out. Me and my dad always fight but im only 14 so he has a longer reach, is in shape, and has a bit boxing experience. He just sticks his hand out kind of just pointed toward me and i can never go around it he just keeps the hand in front of my face and follows were my face goes so i can never move in to a punching reach

he would probably have that video somewhere, but its pretty simple. Just slip, parry, or give a hook to the reached out hand. A good counter I like is to push his hand down and give a nice overhand hook or punch to his face with your other hand of course. Good luck and play safe.

Jeet Kun Do - The way of the intercepting fist - as preached by martial arts expert Bruce Lee, is The Most Effective Fighting Technique by Far. Essentially Jeet Kun Do teaches to #1 DEFEND FIRST. You do this by way of Jeet Kun Do, by striking your opponents hand. Usually you'd be moving backward, away from them, in this part of the action. Then as you're making solid contact on your opponents hand, you plant your feet to strike their face. So, backing up, slapping hands, slapping arms, plant yourself low, throw a strike from your shoulder driving through the place your opponent is occupying, if your finger tip pushups are up to snuff..
Hey off subject but I dislocated my shoulder thee other day sparring do you think it will stop me from fighting again
@evilzombie

I've dislocated a shoulder before and it hasnt impared my workouts in years. Start light and work up to heavier weights in workouts like the military press to build up muscl3 around it to keep it sturdy
location of your gym please?
Gennady golovkin does keep he’s right hand alot to parry and shoot he’s own jab alot
Can I duck down and punch at the same time while I'm ducking down so if I jab that can't hit my head

+expertboxing This was a big mistake Roy Jones was making when he fought Griffin, he missed all his jabs because he wouldn`t commit because he was nervous of being countered. In the second fight he didn`t bother throwing any jabs and just threw hard punches.
Why do you not recommend using your right hand to block their counter?

Hi
Hey jonny, you should shoot your videos in a difference place, this makes your channel more appealing.

I agree, too. It's just that boxing gyms always have people and there's always a lot of noise. I've even tried to go to my gym at 2am and still, somebody was in there. I thought I could go between 2 and 5am and still, some fighter who couldn't sleep would be in there.

I can't believe you missed mentioning the most important aspect of the jab...that it's nearly not even a punch, it's a setup. The whole reason you're throwing your jab is to make your opponent move, so you can hit him with a punch where ever he's going to move to. So, when you're jabbing, best way to not get countered, is to have a devastating combo set in your muscle memory, better even if you have an unending flurry of combo's set in your muscle memory, that you're consistently landing the power punch of the combo. You don't even care that you land the jab when you throw it. All that's necessary that you don't have to worry about counter punches, is that you're consistently landing the power punch to devastating effect. Your opponent will get wary of eating those power punches and won't be looking to counter, but will instead be looking to flee.
@expertboxing

Many of those things are mentioned in other videos. I try not to repeat myself over and over especially when some of these details are not related to the topic (which is about how not to get countered after throwing a jab...rather than the importance of the jab).
@danielvincentkelley
9 жыл бұрын
expertboxing It's important to not get countered, that you be landing that combo. That's The Most Important Thing to not getting countered, is that your opponent fears what's coming.
@danielvincentkelley

expertboxing It was a good video anyhow. i like your stuff and am sure to keep watching.
@expertboxing
9 жыл бұрын
danielvincentkelley Well yes, it's best that you land the combo if you don't want to get countered. But in case you don't (because your opponent made some smart strategic maneuver...which is expected from an evenly skilled and capable opponent), this video helps you to strategize around that.
@danielvincentkelley

expertboxing I liked everything you said in the video, it's all good things to think about in working the jab. You gave a good description of how and why and illustrated not to expect the same from everybody and feel it all out to find your openings. What I was saying was just addendum and it seems the most important part to me, for this discipline, not worrying about getting countered, because your opponent is worrying about getting hit, hard and not with a jab. Though I will say this, barefisted, the jab is powerful enough to dissuade a majority of attackers, in my estimation, for somebody who knows how to throw 1 in a pounce driving through it with a powerful shoulder thrust as the fist snaps at the power stroke.
Not really boxing-related, but you look a bit like Steve Byrne.
