COMMON STOCKS AND UNCOMMON PROFITS SUMMARY (BY PHILIP FISHER)

Support the channel by getting Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits by Philip Fisher here: amzn.to/2oWiOq5
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases.
In this animated video summary of Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits, I will reveal my favorite advice from the master of growth stock investing - Philip Fisher.
Learn to invest like the world’s greatest - Warren Buffett: bit.ly/2RT5per
Top 5 takeaways from Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits:
0:00 Intro
00:10 1. Fisher’s 15 points checklist
04:16 2. The Scuttlebutt method
06:40 3. Unconventional wisdom 1: Dividends don’t matter
09:32 4. Unconventional wisdom 2: You are diversifying too much
11:46 5. Fish in the right pond
TL;DW:
- An investment should tic most of Philip Fisher’s 15 points checklist to be considered a great growth stock
- Use “Main Street” resources, such as suppliers, customers, trade associations and former employees to beat Wall Street in the stock picking game
- Look for companies that have great confidence in their businesses, where money is being reinvested in productive activities, rather than being dealt out in dividends
- How to invest in stocks? Don’t diversify too much - the more companies you own, the less you know about each of them.
- One of the most important investing strategies that you can learn about is filters. There are so many opportunities out there - but so little time.
My goal with this channel is to help you make more money and improve your personal finances. How to become a millionaire? There are many ways to get there - investing in the stock market, becoming a stock trader, doing real estate investing, or why not becoming an entrepreneur? But whether you are interested in how to invest in stocks or investing strategies for creating passive income with rental properties - I hope to be able to provide you with a solution (or at least an idea) here. Warren Buffett - the greatest investor of our time - says that you should fill your mind with competing ideas and then see what makes sense to you. This channel is about filling your mind with those ideas. And in the process - upgrading your money-making toolbox.

This approach is basically the way I ended up making decisions without having heard about Fisher before. Through trial and error and considerable time writing down theories, pondering over the logic of it all etc I've ended up doing a lot of the things mentioned here. For example i once took the entire cybersecurity sector and began comparing numbers, i figured out how to judge their numbers relative to each other and made a formula for that sector and calculated it for each stock, i narrowed it down to a dozen or so stocks. those i put in a watchlist and left it sitting for years out of a lack of money and because i felt i wasn't ready to risk the tiny amount of money i had. now years later all the stocks are in the green and on average beat the market considerably.

Common stocks uncommon profits is the greatest investment book ever written, it doesn't give you a step by step investment strategy like some books but it gives you the general framework needed when looking for great opportunities. This book along with some Peter Lynch and accounting knowledge is all you need to succeed.

3:00 Secret tip: "Don't buy airlines" followed by a picture of Warren Buffet. The fact that Berkshire Hathaway owns airline stocks requires further examination. You should make a video series on famous investors breaking their own rules or styles that are evolving with the times. I think a lot can be learned from these 'exceptions' so that readers understand how to apply these strategies that were written half a century ago. I haven't looked into it too closely but some ppl speculate that Berkshire considers the competitive landscape in airlines to be different now than in the past. I have also heard ppl say that the economics of the industry have changed due to more efficient planes. I think an exploration like this can help readers contextualize these strategies and techniques and understand which are universal truths that can be applied to today's market and which are things that were true in the past but have changed.

  • @TheSwedishInvestor

This is a very good comment. Thank you for the suggestion about looking at exceptions, I'll make sure to write that down. To be honest, I haven't kept myself up-to-date regarding Berkshire Hathaway and its current portfolio, but I see now that it has a quite a few airline companies in it: www.cnbc.com/berkshire-hathaway-portfolio/ . When I made the comment in the video I thought about historical quotes of Buffett such as: "I now have an 800 number I call every time I think about buying a stock in an airline. I say, “I am Warren and I am an air-aholic.” "“The worst sort of business is one that grows rapidly, requires significant capital to engender the growth, and then earns little or no money. Think airlines. Here a durable competitive advantage has proven elusive ever since the days of the Wright Brothers. Indeed, if a farsighted capitalist had been present at Kitty Hawk, he would have done his successors a huge favor by shooting Orville down.“ But conditions and stock prices change, and of course there will always be a price where even the most competitive industry is an attractive one from an investment perspective. My "recommendation" in the video must be taken with a pinch of salt though, that's why I did it in a whisper 😊

The best way to scuttlebutt, is to literally walk out of your house, walk down the street, and observe. Which products and services are consumers ACTUALLY buying and using? Which method do you personally prefer? Value or growth strategies? I find that a lot of what Fisher says is contradicted by Graham in the Intelligent Investor- especially about how we first filter companies based on value and then look at the business. Essentially, identify what is cheap first and then filter based on what's worthy of investment or not. Graham also says that margin of safety arises when the earnings yield over many years exceeds the going rate if goverment bonds. Where growth investing loses out is that it makes you forget to ask "how much" before buying any stock

Hey Ayush Zaveri! This is a good question. I'd love to expand on this one, but it will probably have to be in a video instead of in the comment section. In my own approach I demand value, but I don't mind some growth in there too. Buffett would say that they are variables in the same equation. Investment returns = Value x Growth, or something similar to that (this is not mathematically correct, you'll have to think in abstract terms)

Thank you for your question canja sirep. Dividends are most commonly compared to the price of the stock, as this tells how high the yield is (comparable to a bond). In this takeaway, I wanted to show how high the yield on your initial investment can become in a stock that has strong earning growth, even when the dividends were low to start with.

Overall, the sector has been a terrible investment during the last decades. Low barriers of entry, two very dominant suppliers, almost no customer loyalty ... these are all factors that have ruined the profit margins of the industry. With that being said - an airline company can be a good investment. You just need to find one cheap enough to compensate for the competitiveness of the industry.

You can find all information on companies 10k, investor presentations and do a individual research on CEO and managment team, stay updated on the news of the company, read their financial statement, and be rational. You dont neet to contact people that work for a company or the industry its self, to find information if you want to invest in the company.

You have the internet so it is easy to find people today in different industries. The key that many investors starting out do not understand that is as much qualitative as it is quantitative. Judging the quality of a company is as important as judging their numbers.

But the bulk of the company is their main Cola brand. The rest is just diversification for them but they make their money through the cola. There are 3 billion new customers coming to the market place over the next decade that they can sell their Cola to.
