You went beyond the typical suggestions to improve a bathroom! This touched on things like sconces and height placement that most designers miss. Take a bow... or maybe a curtsy.

two years ago we gutted and redid one of our main bathrooms. new ceiling, new walls, new ventilation, moved light switches, tile surround with a niche, new lighting, added a pocket door, paint, and decor. all for $5,000. thank God for my diy'er husband because it could have cost so much more if he hadn't done everything himself!

When I updated my bathroom, I had the carpenter build an inset medicine cabinet off to the side from t he vanity, then used framed artwork as the door. Practical, but looks beautiful.

My friend and I are watching together and she turned to me and said, “I’ve heard you say almost all of this!” So nice to be validated (as I am no professional). Love your channel, love your advise. Hoping you will one day cover a large, rectangular, unused front room that has three doors, a fireplace, three large floor to ceiling windows, with eleven foot ceilings (did I mention our home was built in 1892?). Everyone just walks through it. This room has had me stumped since day one! Keep up the great channel - love it!

Barn doors on bathrooms are awful. You can actually see behind the gap most of the time, so besides visual privacy there is also the issue of sounds and odors! Just gross. I don’t mind them dividing a living area from a kitchen or dining room, but not for an area that needs complete visual and sound privacy, so not even for bedrooms.

Thanks for this! We’re in the middle of a remodeling the upstairs bathroom in our 1922 colonial. I LOVE Jenna Sue’s upstairs cottage bathroom (with the big cathedral mirror and the brick floors). It has a lot of elements that we already have throughout the rest of our house (white, wood, brick, and it’s rustic). Now I’m a little concerned that the brick tiles would be considered too trendy…but we’ll probably still go for it 😂

We updated our large bathroom a few years ago and instead of using the towel bar, I had hubby attach old coat hooks that came out of the old school in the town we are from. they were a bit rusty but we cleaned them up a bit and sealed them to protect the towels and the hooks. they hang vertically on the end of the short wall next to the shower and work perfectly.

We're remodeling both of our bathrooms in our 1948 Cape Cod house. One detail I asked for is a way to plug in an electric toothbrush so it doesn't have to stand on the counter. In one bathroom, the vanity has doors under the sink so an outlet was put on the wall under the sink so the toothbrush can stand on the shelf under the sink. In the other bathroom, which has a pedestal sink, a new medicine cabinet over the toilet has an outlet inside for the toothbrush.

If anyone uses Carrara marble, be careful with your heated hair styling tools. The Carrara I had in my last house, though properly sealed, got an ugly, brown burn stain the first and only time I heated up my flat iron on the counter. Over time, even though I sealed it annually, the marble got other stains and dull spots. In comparison, the honed granite countertops I had in that house were absolutely indestructible and beautiful.

I personally don’t like pocket doors either. Most don’t lock well and the hollow wall also transmits sounds readily. If space for a full door is an issue, I’m wondering if solid core bifold width doors could be mounted on regular hinges so the door width is half size that opens in the middle like French doors. With a routed rabbit edge they could even interlock so no sound transmission where they meet. I’m just not sure what type of lock to use but I’m sure French doors have locks that could work. I keep thinking about this because I’m trying to find space to add a first floor powder room and room for a door may be an issue.

Don't mix your woods, but can you mix the tiles? Like subway on walls and penny tiles on the floor? Should they be the same color in tgat case? What if the sink wall only has room for a mirror and no side lighting. Should you then use the overhead lighting that you just instructed us not to use? I'm disabled. We are replacing the only tub in the only bathroom with a shower so I can access it more safely and future owners be damned. Sometimes that's just way life is.

I had them sanded and refinished as light as possible. I have a second bedroom and a den off the hallway. I left them dark. I love the contrast. I may not be hip but I believe in decorating that pleases you.

Question before I sign up for the Design Classes- is this going to work for me if my home is currently very cluttered? In the last 3.5 years I've had 2 daughters get married and leave home but left stuff behind still; both parents passed away and much of their stuff came to my house. I'm just now able to START working on it after taking care of one daughter for months following a difficult birth experience she had. My background is in interior design but that was over 20 years ago. Thoughts?

*Good tips❣️ I am about to tear out my horrible tile in the main bathroom that was DIY'd by the previous owners, because it LOOKS DIY'd‼️😬😲😳 They didn't use spacers so there are THICK AND THIN GROUT LINES and patched corners. This bathroom makes me CRINGE and shudder every time I walk into it.😬🥶🥴😵‍💫😖* *I liked what you said about the sconces, too. This bathroom has the overhead light bar with seven small gooseneck fixtures with white frosted flower-shaped glass globes that are open at the bottom, so you can see the bulbs. And, the fixture is silver...YUCK‼️ Also, the mirror is the FULL LENGTH OF THE WALL. Any suggestions for lighting since there is no open wall space for sconces, since it's all one big rectangular mirror? 😔 (This house was built in 1982.) I'd really appreciate your guidance. 😉💕🤍🍃*

Depends on whether you have a bathroom with a toilet or are they separate. Our toilet is a separate room, we don't have any pets, so I don't see how having toothbrushes over the sink is unhygienic. Plus they dry better when not in a cabinet.

Always use hooks not towel bars. Too much fussing folding things after every use even for guests they will thank you. They will dry better on hooks. The bigger the better for thicker towels. It will also a help for kids to hang there own towels so a learning activity and a responsibility for them.

Yep, I have to disagree with this one. Choose the safe choice? Boring. Blah. Barn doors being “out”? Hey, you’re entitled to your opinion. They’ve worked for people for hundreds of years. May be out or overdone as a trend, but I can imagine they would be beautiful with white tile and black accents around the room. Maybe even incorporating some soft neutrals. Rules can be broken 🤪

There's nothing pretty about toothbrushes displayed in a bathroom, not to mention the germs that fall on something you will then put in your mouth. The vintage-looking holder is pretty but wouldn't want brushes there that I intended on using.
