About this video:
In this video, we get invited onboard the rugged yet elegant Nordhavn N55 Trawler “Aboard Mermaid Monster.” Follow along as we trick the owner into offering us “free-use” of their beautiful yacht. Don’t worry, its all in good fun.
Aboard Mermaid Monster is a KZread channel that mixes cinéma-vérité documentary and traditional KZread vlogging filmmaking styles. The channel follows the adventures of a family that sold their home to live aboard their Nordhavn trawler yacht. The videos mix experiential learning with situational comedy as they develop their seamanship skills in preparation for joining a flotilla that intends to achieve a Atlantic Ocean crossing.
For a long time, I’ve admired Nordhavn yachts for their long range capability, durability, and beauty. So much so that I joined a online Facebook group called “Nordhavn Dreamers.”
“Thank You!” Brooke & Braden for inviting us Aboard Mermaid Monster and allowing us to create this silly video. You guys are awesome, your family is beautiful, and your lifestyle inspiring.
Next, Annette and I are off to make a very special adventure video, but more about that in a later video. Stay tuned....
About us:
We are a couple in our 50’s living near Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA. We are trailer boaters. Our boat is a Sea Ray 225 Weekender, and its the smallest Sea Ray I have owned. Follow along as we make the transition from marina life were things were done for us to do-it-yourself boating.
As our family has spread out, trailer boating opens new possibilities for us to grow, explore and enjoy. Our destinations include the bay of Green Bay on Lake Michigan, and instate bodies of water including Lake Winnebago, the Winnebago Pool Chain of Lakes consisting of Lake Butte Des Morts, Lake Winneconne, Lake Poygon, Partridge Lake, the Fox river, the Wolf river, the Waupaca King chain of lakes, Lake Du Bay on the Wisconsin River, the Eagle River chain of lakes and more.

I got cut off the last thing is have write down things like the time she jumped off the back of the boat, that was fantastic. If she needs help go head and help when she reads it in say 50 years she’ll get a little lump in her throat. From time to time I see her brother calling her up to read some passage to him.

Wow Thanks Doug. This is not a new idea for me (40 years) And yes the terminology is different. If it has a sail its a Yacht. If it's a "scimming" boat its a Speed boat. The rest are Cruisers. ( to the average person) I live in Goulburn NSW. An hour and hour and twenty from the sea. So Baitmans Bay in our favourite destination. And far enough away from Sydney to be not expensive. The best Marina is $ 6000.00 for a year for a 10 meter boat. Power. Water. Black water removal service. Wi-Fi all included. My Sister had a houseboat on Broken bay We would stay there occasionally. So if we never slip the moorings its cool. Baitmans Bay is fun in its self. On the wild side it would be nice to have boat that could make the trip to Tasmania. The Sydney to Hobart. Is a big thing down here. So I did enjoy your interview on the Mermaid monster .Aussies love "Taking the Piss" And if you ever make it down my way drop in stay for a meal or a few days. Cooking is my main Hobby Cheers Doug

Fox RodX275 - Aboard Mermaid Monster just posted a new video today and it has comments for now. Brooke mentioned KZread deleting comments in a reply to a comment on this new video. I think it has something to do with people leaving inappropriate comments but I’m not sure. Personally, I need to delete about 1 in 2 comments I receive on by videos due to inappropriate commenting. Most of the inappropriate comments get auto-flagged by KZread for my review before they make it to pubic viewing. This make me understand why so many KZread content creators turn off commenting. One thing I find interesting is I have never seen negative or inappropriate comments come from other KZread content creators.

glen wooten I do not know. They told me they are not the first owners of their boat. You can get a general idea about the cost of a used Nordhavn here nordhavn.com/brokerage/listings/

Thanks Doug. Cruisers are a little cheaper in Australia. I'm looking for a boat myself but unless I win the lottery. A Nordhavn 55 is out of my League. My mum took us on a similar adventure back in the 1960s but on land in a 16 ft caravan ( trailer) much like the film Captain fantastic. but Working class. My mum was Unwell and was dead by 1972. HAPPY TRAILS

glen wooten, is there anything else I can do for you? As far as Nordhavn prices being high among cruisers, they are not cruisers, at least not given how we use the term in the USA. When I hear the term cruiser, I assume the person is talking about a boat with a cabin and a planing hull that rides on top of the water for speed, like a rock skipping across the waters surface, has comparatively short maximum fuel range, under 200 miles, and minimal to no system redundancy, for use where rescue is available in short order, under a day. This cruiser type of boat spends a fraction of a percent of its life with the motors running. 20 year used cruisers are commonly found with under 1,000 hours on the motors. This boat is ideal for cruising along the coastline, going from marina to marina, or visiting islands under a days journey from shore. A Nordhavn is a full displacement trawler. Its hull does not skip across the waters surface like a boat with a planing hull, it flows through the water like a torpedo, speed is replaced by efficiency, fuel range is measured in the thousands of miles, system redundancy exists for all critical systems. The vessel has systems to polish its own fuel, desalinate salty ocean water for drinking, cooking, and bathing, and the motors life expectancy is measured in the tens of thousands of hours. This is the vessel that’s needed to cross oceans, called passage making or blue water boating. Within this type of boat, Nordhavns are considered a quality, rugged, semi-custom vessel at a near production vessel price. ♦️What is your intended boating application? Day cruising? Occasional overnights? Weeks onboard at a time? Live onboard? ♦️How far do you intent to travel on your boat? Gone for a day? A month? A year? Crossing oceans? ♦️What is your desired vessel size? ♦️What is your purchase price and annual slip/storage/insurance/maintenance/fuel/repairs budget expectations? ♦️Could you describe your past level of boating experience? How would you assess your personal level of seamanship? As a point of reference, my previous cruiser was 31 feet long, had twin engines and a generator. I purchased it 7 years used, and after adding the generator, it cost a bit over $80,000 USD. If I did not use the boat, the boat cost me about $800 USD month year round between slip/storage/insurance/repairs and maintenance. At the start, I had most of the repairs and maintenance done for me. Three years later, I was doing all routine maintenance and as much of the repairs as I could myself. I had no monthly payment, so none of that $800/month went to pay for the boat. Fuel economy was about 1 mile to the gallon. When I actually used the boat, the costs went up by how much fuel I used. I typically burned through 100 gallons of fuel on a weekend, at about $4/gallon. My total operating costs were ballpark $12,000 - $14,000/year USD. I slept onboad about 30 nights a year, almost all of it away from any maina, on the hook/anchor. With Mermaid Monster being 55 feet long, much wider, and 365 days/year live aboard, all expenses would me much higher. Today, I have a smaller trailer boat with cuddy cabin. All costs are much smaller. We are enjoying exploring inland waterways, but as we age, the days when we are comfortable pulling, launching, and loading this boat are numbered. I also miss the creature comforts of a larger boat such as air conditioning, a flushing toilet, a shower, and a real mattress. Within 3-5 years, I expect we will return to the marina life, with a express cruiser in the 37 foot long range.

Before I forget I wanted to say something about the interview you both had with that reporter. He asked you a question about how you felt about taking the kids. Maybe it’s just me but I detected a negative inflection in his voice. If I was there I would have asked him this question? As a reporter are you doing at this point in your life what you wanted all your life going back to your childhood. Bla bla bla what you are doing for your kids now at this point in time is something they will look back for the rest of their lives and will say to them selves this is or was the best time of there lives. Imagine that when you and me are gone that’s what they will be saying. Now try and imagine how this voyage will mold them for the future. I’m 69 buy your daughter a book she can write down .

John Turner, thank you for watching our video. I guess I am the reporter, well, with Annette’s help. This was a silly / funny video, with silly / funny questions. The boat owners, Brooke and Braden have their own popular KZread channel. Here is a link to their newest video kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZijxK-Jnq2nc5c.html
