It would have been interesting to see what the gate did on the condenser mic. Auto ducking is pretty cool. The way I have my desk set up I much prefer the level meters to be on the front. The MOTU M2 works well for me. Anything with blink lights and level meters makes me happy but I need to actually see them when in use. My interface sits under a shelf so anything with knobs and meters on top isn't going to make it to my desk.

I'm guessing it's TRRS for the output so that it can go into a phone as a mic input. The diagram on Amazon shows phone input for both the normal output and in I/O TRRS jack. Makes sense, but yeah, a bit confusing. I can't believe they didn't notice the monitoring levels aren't visually accurate - odd mistake to make. And you're right, all these types of multiple I/O interfaces have that built-in reverb ability, which I believe is because they get a lot of use from people who do singing/karaoke type stuff on phone apps that you would be simple to use with these types of devices. Great, thorough review!

Pretty decent debut interface. As you said the gate and verb are pretty unusable. I noticed it's not the quietest interface either. Still, I hope they can address the issues in a future version. For a lotta people 24-bit and 48k is just fine. Another excellent walkthrough!

Looking more closely at the specs, I hadn't noticed that this was a 24 bit device, compared to 16 bit for the Zoom PodTrak. I think you've been using the latter, correct?

JB! Does the "instrument switch" toggle the 1/4 inch jack between Instrument level and line level? Or maybe some other combination? On some pro gear XLR and 1/4" can be mic/line/or digital sources. peace

OK so a couple of things that I need to say as an audio engineer, because yes this devices have a lot of cons but I don't think everything you said is fair : -1) You're looking at a VU meter, *not* a full-scale meter. This means that this meter is *not* saying you're clipping, it's telling the dynamic of your voice, and reporting when you're going above average loudness. A professional VU meter *will* indicated clipping at whatever calibrated point on a full-scale meter (what you're looking at in your DAW) you set it to, but that just means you're going above the threshold *you* decided, not that you're clipping (for example, most VU meters in modern studios would be set-up to indicate clipping at anything above -18dB full scale or dBFS). The full-scale meter clips at anything above 0. Having said that, the fact there is no scale make it unfortunately useless, and the clipping is too reactive, but the idea of a VU meter built into the interface itself is brilliant! - 2) You cannot get anything out of an output connected to a phone input without a TRRS jack. Otherwise, the phone thinks you're using headphones. This have been the case for awhile now. This seems to be designed for streaming only, and as such, some of the decisions aren't as weird as they might mean. In my experience, people tend to set their gain way too quiet for streaming and crank up their headphones. Shame however you can't dial in the gain properly :(

It has a toggle for streaming or multi track. I dunno, its just wonky. I have used MANY devices with digital meters...and this one just doesn't make sense to me. BUT...I by no means will pretend I am an audio engineer. As a user of tons of gear...this one was just off to me, BUT I still have it, as it is actually quite nice as a portable unit that can be used to stream music into shows on the go. Appreciate the thoughts and the view. Would love to hear more thoughts if you can get your hands on this thing...or if you have one already?

Do you think the robotic/reverby effect was because of a tiny latency? I noticed that too when I bought a cheap generic soundcard that has some built in effects. It was too annoying for me and made it unusable.

  • @ObscureMics

@@ObscureMics btw I'm looking for an interface with a built in DSP for monitoring and saw the Yamaha AG03. Haven't bought it yet because it's a bit out of my budget but I might consider it. The built in DSP looks powerful. It has EQ/compression/reverb configurable via desktop app. Just thought you might be interested. Love your channel and your attitude ✌️🤟
