Comic Book Light Bleaching Guide!

Flash Comics No. 20 Conservation Episode 6: Photobleaching the interior of the cover.
In this video series we evaluate this golden age comic book--Flash Comics #20, from August 1941--for conservation and submission to CGC. In today’s video I will review the history and chemistry behind photobleaching paper and provide a step-by-step guide for reducing ink bleed with photobleaching!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

    Great results Dr. Paul! Would you recommend the same process be used for brightening the covers as well? Humidity chamber only and no use of Hydrogen Peroxide? Thank you for sharing the video and your knowledge 🙏🏼

    Richard, glad you enjoyed it! I recommend using the least invasive procedure that will get the desired effect. Experiment and use caution and patience. Start with humidity + BLED, move to Ca(OH) + BLED when you need it. Use H2O2 only when you need it-and then in low concentration-and always neutralize the carboxyl groups with Ca(OH) after H2O2 treatment. Good luck and share your results with us!

    The cover looks beautiful, Dr. Paul. You noted that the tear seal is virtually invisible after the photo-bleaching. I've never seen (or felt) a book with a tear seal before. How noticeable is it to the touch? Also, will the book still get a conserved grade with the photo bleaching?

  • @DrPaulKosnik

    Paul, yes, you will feel it. Your fingers are very sensitive and you can percieve a bump as small as 10-20 microns! That said, my goal is never to completely hide work, but rather to make it inobtrusive. Careful examination will nearly always reveal conservation work, and disclosure is key. We don't want anyone to be decived by our work. Regarding photo bleaching, the key is not overdoing it. CGC has no guidelines for photobleaching at the moment other than if it doesn't look right, they'll flag it. As with most things in life, a conservative moderate approach is best; i've yet to get a single purple label i did not expect.

    @@user-ct7eh7hh4u a properly-executed Ca(OH) overlay will come back from CGC the same as an H2O overlay. Personally I have never received anything but Universal grade for a BLED-O using a 25% saturated Ca(OH) solution.

    @@DrPaulKosnikvery good to know. I’m sometimes hesitant to use certain agents if i end up selling the book. Would like to think the buyer is more likely to have a shot at a blue label if they were to ever get it professionally graded. Thanks!

    Hi, I collect Sports Illustrateds and am new to cleaning. I have a key issue with what I'm going to call small foxing dots on the cover. In a small area where the cover happens to be white, one of the dots is what I believe to be the classic light brown color of what I think I know as foxing. I don't have the nerve to do H2O2, but I would try the light. Question; does BLED remove foxing from a colored section or only white? So BLED actually makes the colors more vibrant afterward? Thanks.

  • @DrPaulKosnik

    @DrPaulKosnik

    4 ай бұрын

    G, Foxing is difficult. The chromophores present in my experience need a strong bleaching action to remove. The BLED alone will improve their appearance, but you will likely need to step up to H2O2 to take care of them, and even then they may remain barely noticeable. To be clear, BLED doesn't actually make the colors more vibrant, but to your eyes it can APPEAR that they are more vibrant when the whites are lightened up. 👍🏽
