Learn to Fix Comic Book Tears!

Flash Comics No. 20 Conservation Episode 5: Archival tear seal to inner wraps.
In this video series we evaluate this golden age comic book--Flash Comics #20, from August 1941--for conservation and submission to CGC. In today’s video I will perform an archival tear seal with Japanese paper and methyl cellulose!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

Dear Dr Paul, great job and series. I’m really enjoying it. I have been using your 1979 fast method of deacidifying the interior and I like it. I have similar setup and the same squeegee - easy to use. It cuts back on time and the results are similar to a bath. I tend to do all the pages, instead of select ones, for consistent outcome. I use the Reemay Nonwoven Fabric (2250) from Museum Services which is more delicate than the thicker reemay and actually comparable to Hollytex but cheaper. I have applied the MC to tengujo on dry paper before, and used my hangar iron over the repair for fast drying of the MC. It hasn’t been a problem so far with rippling. But generally I like wetting the paper first before proceeding with repairs. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone!

Thanks again for another informative video Dr. Paul. Is there someplace you recommend to get the Japanese paper in starter quantities. I am going to throw out my archival tape and need to practice the mending your teaching

Dr. Paul, what would be the difference in the results (strength, texture, appearance, etc.) if the tear seals are applied to dry paper rather than wet? The comic is looking great!

Paul, overall pretty similar i believe on those three metrics. If it's too wet you could make an argument for less overall strength depending on how it's dried if your adhesive was pulled away by capillary action before it could dry in place. The main reason i do the work wet is to get a perfectly smooth, flat final result every time with no concern for differential drying.

Dr. Paul what is the downside of using archival tape to repair tears instead of methyl cellulose with tengkujuh (Japanese paper)?

Although archival tape is occasionally used in conservation, it is considered irreversible or very difficult to remove without damaging the paper. Because of this, comic book conservationists do not use tape, archival or otherwise, and CGC does not allow the use of tape in conservation grades.
