Coming soon. I intend to create four more of the light arrays this evening for testing. If they all work out then I can put those for sale. additionally I cam making a small light box for those who dont want to source their own. This would be custom made. I may make and sell custom light masks for the popular books like H181, ASM129, and GSXM1 as well they would be inexpensive and useful..... I hope!

Very well done. The book is looking very clean, some might even say immaculate. No doubt the white of the back cover and title pop. As a collector who is getting into dry cleaning myself, I appreciate your approach. There are many video's on YT and I glean knowledge from each one of them. Thank you for posting. Oh and another thing about colored regions on the front cover: these can change in brightness if the backside of the cover is whitened. I have only noticed improvement in colored areas. You can’t judge such things without controlled before n after pics.

Amazing how you can manufacture masks so well! And great results on that Hulk 181! I have also made a light box borrowing from you and Kaptain Mike. Here’s something I can contribute: use a flatbed scanner for before and after images. You need controls in science and the illumination is well controlled if you use a scanner! Trying to hold my cell phone above a comic is very difficult to do consistently.

If you use professional grade aluminum foil tape on the inside of your BLED box. It will increase the efficiency of your UV light while the comic is in the box.

That certainly can be true. However, if you use 90 degree lights the difference is only a couple of percent and within error by my measurements. is you use a 120 or wider fixture then the difference is much more measurable. mirrors on the same plane as the light fixture and adding a greater number of smaller lights themselves presents a significantly greater light intensity measurement in the spectral range of interest. at least for me it does

I bought your pressing boards I don't understand how to use the ones for the center that's got the staple cutouts.. and the one that goes behind the cover I find is way too thick it just chews up my books..

Impressive lightening results! No H2O2 or other bleaching agent used during the 5-hour light box step? Love the mask! Did you scan the cover and cut the mask with your laser cutter? Is the yellow color significant, or just what you had lying around?

Thanks Dan! I honestly expected this to take about 12 hours without any bleach, but I thought it looked pretty naturally white after about 5 hours. With peroxide or other oxidizing pastes is occurs more quickly but there are a couple of side effects that I dont like. one is that the paper *could* become somewhat stiff. it doesn't always happen but it can happen. another is that its more difficult to determine when the book looks "naturally white" and stop there. with the new CGC grading categories of a book looking "too white" and getting purple label, I am cautious about overdoing it. to remove every single stain or spot and make the book brilliantly white is not my goal. for the mask. I did scan the cover, and I manually drew the path over the white areas with the pen tool in adobe illustrator. I tried selecting just the white areas, but it didn't provide good results. see my cleaning of a $500 bill video for a rough outline of how I did it. it's difficult to see a good contrast between the white and other colors while the light is on. surprisingly the yellow looks orange under the light and provides good contrast against the white letters. I am going to make some in the future that are transparent but leave the paper on most parts of it. that will allow me to remove the paper from certain areas so I can continue to mast the spots in the center of the letters like the B . see ya

Nice, but what about the inside pages? Another thought that occurs to me is I never see people talking about the importance of either using a soft brush to go over the inside pages or a microfiber cloth to insure there is no dirt or debris there. One of the very first comics I ever pressed ended up with a hole in it because of a tiny bit of dirt that was between one of the inside pages.

That’s a good point, Jim. What I don’t show is that I go through the book and count the pages . Especially in this book I look for a missing coupon. I also blow off each page with a can of keyboard cleaning air!

If I could subscribe again, I definitely would. Those chamfer boards are great addition to my cleaning/pressing. A must if you ask me. I use them all the time. Granted, I screwed the pooch by pressing a little to hard on one book and left a line where the chamfer starts. It was easy enough to tack iron out, but, a learning lesson nonetheless. Love your masking boards. Unfortunately, don't have the "whatever it is you use to cut the mask". I'll trace and cut out with an knife/scissors and backing board. Love the sarcasm.

So I’m not too sure I get what your saying , so I press a book let’s say a copper age 160 degrees for 10 mins , using aluminum plates , after the 10 mins it’s a good idea to put the just heated book under the plaid cold press bits for 3-5 days ? I thought it would be like 24 hours max. Any insight would be great. -Andrew

It would be much easier for all of us if there were recipes or work instructions for every age of book, every climate, and problem on the ebook. 24 hours is in the "just getting started" category of cold pressing and certainly nowhere near a maximum. In fact, If you have removed spine tics and you want to prevent them from reverting, you can use a local targeted pressure with clamps and board in which the clamps are directly above the spine tics and that can, indeed be 12-24 hours. ( I call these reversion stoppers), In general, to keep the books from becoming generally wavy after heat pressing a cold press is typically necessary. many books curve or wave initially when they are removed from the press and sometimes additional, previously removed aberrations will return after a few days. I hope this helps! Rick

No I didnt try anything else. However someone else did before me as the book had been cleaned and pressed.

I dont remember on this specific copy of Hulk 181 whether is was just the light alone or light with one application of peroxide, but the description in the video will mention what was done to this particular book. (sorry but I do so many copies of that book its hard for me to remember each one). However, it is common for me to use light only.

Wow that was one amazing transformation from "old basement yellow" to "well cared for white" that I would not have believed possible if it wasn't documented. Gives me hope for some other books. On the subject of H202, I've always had a fear of the damage it could do. Would it help if a book had a minimal dose of it then was heavily flushed after or is there something that can remediate or neutralize it's continuing effects or would you simply suggest not using it at all? Seems many people are using it now, and I'd hate to see in 20 years everyone looking back saying "we should never have used that stuff!"

well I find that a single dose of 6% peroxide is best for me. More doses work better but greatly increases the chances of roughening the paper. 3% peroxide works well too but usually requires two doses to get to the same brightness in my experience. afterwards I just give it a longer duration of light exposure. it will get to the desired brightness but could take days

Can I use immacuclean as a basic cleaner for U.S. 1-Sheet cinema posters? I did not consider comic book restoration to be akin to cleaning and restoring cinema posters. Products and advice are not readily available in the U.K..

I did clean one poster for breakfast at tiffany's with it and it seems to work well, but it was only in one small area.

Have you tried doing a press to a video game manual some of those can go for big money if there from a rare game and there pretty much a lay out of a comic book.

Hi chris, I didn’t do anything to the interior pages. I can show photos of you like. This book has been pressed and cleaned previous and was in a cgc case. The grade was 3.5 with Ow pages, if I remember correctly.

Hey Rick- I had to laugh at your commentary about the effort of rewinding the video to view the before and after photos. The time required of you to film and edit should not be compounded with what is a rather simple task of a sub. I just wanted to let you know I am fine with rewinding. I would however, like to request that you speak a bit louder. When watching, I find that when I set my volume at a 3, its a little hard to hear you. Do you mind projecting a little more? 😂

If I recall didn’t you do a video on the wavelengths which impact visible color (causing fade) and build your lights to isolate and emit only those in the spectrum least harmful to common colors including orange? Is it possible this is why you are not experiencing the same fade others have described?

@@marcloev2072 yeah thats correct Mark, I did order and mount LEDs in a very specific range. I've performed several controlled and designed experiments with color fading. I used FTIR to measure the absorbance of the ink with infrared light. I guess you don't have to be a genius to know that even visible light fades books and that some colors are more susceptible than others. I do this particular book so often and although I have never personally noticed the orange color fade a noticeable amount, I didn't want to take any chances. Ive seen many other books with sticky not price takes even on a cgc case where the book is faded everywhere but behind the sticky note.Generally I am not too worried about it, but on Hulk 181 , ASM129, ASM300, and gsxm1 I like to use a light mask, just in case. maybe its nothing but it is still kind of fun. . .
