It’s much harder for comedians to take risks when people are so easily offended. As a result, a large portion of “mainstream” comedy in television has gone soft over the years. Thankfully, some comedians have started speaking out and pushing back against this issue.

Thank you for saying this!!! So many people, myself included, dog on SNL and only think they post woke content. Sure, they definitely have a political leaning as a collective that's not hard to spot but if people took the time to watch some of the sketches they would see there are several talented and creative people on the show. Sarah Sherman is straight up weird and always does body horror comedy really well. Marcello Hernandez is a great comedian and has great energy and not afraid to be stupid in a sketch. I know it's culturally common to shit on SNL and sure, they are nothing like the several golden years they had in the last few decades, but they are still a comedic show with promise and potential and I respect that.

Sadly there is nothing to watch currently on television that doesn’t have a moral agenda that most people cannot relate to. I get bored easily and nothing holds my attention as much as 70’s, 80’s and 90’s television and movies. Me and my 14 year old daughter are currently going through the “must watch” shows and movies of the past. Funny because she is getting more funny and sarcastic as she sucks up this media.

Nowadays, I’ll see articles from people who were offended at Barney’s behavior and the portrayal of the women who fell for it. Newsflash, it was intentional to poke fun at BOTH sides of the dating market. That’s what made it hilarious.

I remember watching the friends reunion and how they took the audience in consideration. Like, the episodes were recorded and they talked about how sometimes they decided things based on the reactions, just like they made Chandler and Monica a couple BECAUSE of the people's reaction to it. The audience was a huge part of that show, and that's amazing.

I was laughing from the jokes but also just from a kind of release of tension when I watched the Brady roast. It really did feel like, “Oh, Ok. The tide has turned and we’re on our way back to sanity.” And I really think a large part of that tide turning is that this batch of comedians have been mentored in a way by Joe Rogan and most if not all of them have their own podcasts and they are all celebrating one another and standing with each other. It’s giving them the confidence to just go for it and the audiences they are garnering are huge. People want it, they can see that, and it’s all building a momentum of, “Uhm, actually … no. We aren’t going to cower to your woke nonsense.” Another piece of this is seeing all the Frat Bros on campuses starting to show up and what I love the most is that they aren’t being aggressive. They are holding their ground but they aren’t mad. They’re MOCKING the antifa LARPers and woke protestors. Mocking them. It’s so great to see. Comedy and a good sense of humour will lift us out of this miasma.

This is why I got so sucked into Something Witty Entertainment; they parodize anime (predominantly Sword Art Online). At first their jokes catch me off-guard, but then I REVEL in the knowledge that so much of the humor they put out there would NEVER slide in something more official, and that is partly why it's so grand - because it's refreshing in it's candor. I am reminded of the rise of Stan Lee's famous Marvel characters: he got so sick and tired of the approved, boring, heavily censored comic book characters and stories that - with some strong encouragement - he bucked the PC mold and //wrote what he wanted//, and in so doing he succeeded at what so many in the same industry failed, over time, to do: Entertain.

People who don't like comedy just don't get what comedy is, they don't understand jokes and think joking is an attack, when it's just a way to defuse any subject and explore it's weaknesses and strengths, its probably very unhappy, unfunny and insecure people that take anything as a personal attack and aren't able to laugh about themselves, therefore insecurity. Things can be offensive, yes, but you are the one that chooses to open that door, take it personally and "get offended", when people who are actually confident and have a real self-esteem can choose to simply ignore and let 'offensive' stuff just slip and crash on its own weight. Comedy is an essential piece of culture, pushes it forward and makes people really look at taboo or prohibited subjects, as nothing should be. It's an incarnation of liberty and free speech

There are people who can't take jokes, but I'd assume some of the PCness is driven by conditions on set. In the past, I remember stories about one of Dan Harmon's female writers who, I think, was so afraid of him that she once hid under a table. I think there was an outtake from community where Allison Brie was mimicking acting out a scene on camera in imitation of... um, adult entertainment while taking instructions from off camera. There's pushback from the audience. But some of the creative process on comedy programs could likely be viewed by HR fairly as workplace bullying, sexual harassment or just stuff that opens a production up to lawsuits. Same way, I'm pretty sure Chris Pratt has a story about being reprimanded for being naked on the set of Parks and Recreation. He was supposed to be wearing a skinsuit, but the much-repeated 'funny' story was how he removed it to get a better reaction. So... an otherwise criminal act of flashing someone fell within the bounds of hijinx. Even if you think you should be able to say ANYTHING, the writers' room and the set are still workplaces with HR and lawyers. And I'm aware of actors who refused to film scenes because they couldn't face the level of debasement (I think one of the actors from 'the boys'). I don't know if it's possible to have a contract that applies at all levels of 'anything goes' - particular if there's improv involved or the scripts aren't all written.

This kind of topic had been going on since the 1995 TV show, Duckman. It was an episode called Jonking the Chicken where he explains how: "Comedy should provoke! It should blast through prejudices, challenge pre-conceptions! Comedy should always leave you different than when it found you!" He goes on before and after the speech, but he's absolutely right. I'm 27 and I've been a huge fan of old comedy since the days MASH was still being shown on Comedy Central in early 2000s, because humour never left me with a negative view when it got heavy. I've never had negative views towards anyone because those thoughts have always left in good faith. Why should laughing be considered a crime when it comes to comedy? Shall we just cut off the build-up and be left with the act?

Oh Brett, one of the best "POLITCALLY INCORRECT" shows from the late 80's, and early 90's, Married with Children would never be produced in today's age. That show was so stupid, which made it so damned funny. Even back in the 70's some more dramatic shows had it's funny moments. One in particular, Emergency had an episode where Johnny Gage had gotten tired of having practice jokes played on him, so he bought a book on practice jokes. Well one was where he bought a box of chocolates, some garlic extract, and a syringe to see who the guilty party who would eat all the candy was. Well at the end of the show, the chocolates were still there, and he ate one himself.

We need the comics of old that were equal opportunity insulters like Mel Brooks and Don Rickles. Regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, or lifestyle, everyone was fair game.

Seinfeld King of queens Everybody loves Raymond and more Late 90’s early 2000’s sitcoms were peak comedy in my opinion. Real comedians, scenes you could tell that were improvised by the actors. Now days it all feels so scripted and predictable and they all follow similar storylines IMO.

I saw the change in comedy with a friend group, I made a joke about the nuclear bombs cuz we were talking about a nintendo thing in Japan only, so I said :man, they still mad about those two bombs?" And they were all like "hey, that's too far cuz alot if ppl died" but we made 9/11 jokes and all laughed at that other times we hung out. The hypocrisy man

The funniest show I've seen recently is Derry Girls on netflix. It's an Irish show about teenagers in the nineties, and I was so pleasantly surprised I binge watched the entire show in a couple of days. I haven't binge watched a TV show in over half a decade.

We need to bring back the vintage old-school comedy where if someone was offended by one of your jokes you gave them a coconut-cream pie right in the kisser, Miss Coopah, and then a nice spritzing with the seltzer bottle to seal the deal.

And we can see the anti-A.I views of Matt Walsh collide with the more reptilian ones of Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder (Steven believes A.I should replace every good thing, right? I know Ben Shapiro does. I just haven't seen Crowder for a while now).
