Comedian Kathy Lette talks writing, ageing & putting the 'sex' into sexagenarian | Australian Story

When Kathy Lette co-wrote Puberty Blues in her late teens, she became known in Australia as the voice of youth, a label she struggled to shake even as she approached her 30s.

But when she left husband Kim Williams for Geoffrey Robertson and moved to London, she found her voice. In a succession of best-selling novels, she has lightly fictionalised the various stages of her life, including marriage, motherhood and divorce.
Now 63, Lette is determined to age disgracefully and believes post-menopause is the best time in a woman’s life. She talks about her long and successful career, her relationships and the pride she takes in the achievements of her autistic son Jules, who is carving out a successful acting career.

I grew up smack bang in the middle of Kathy's 'Puberty Blues' generation, although I was a long way from Sydney or anything like Surfy Culture. "Australian Story" and "4 Corners" were "must watch" TV for that large portion of my life that I lived in Australia. Thanks for placing this video on a KZread platform without Geoblocking so that us KiwAussies can enjoy it now. There has probably never been a 'bad' episode of Australian Story, and this one here is certainly one of the best. The end two minutes especially. Saying "Thank-you" seems grossly insufficient. Bless you all.

It is so uplifting and inspiring 🙌 absolutely. As I'm 63 and she's right. The hard graft has been, and the freedom fun begins. She gives much hope indeed ❤.

My God - loved that. Thank you. I'm a Shire boy who went to London and didn't come back too. And Caroline Jones too. Rest in Peace.

Many many years ago Lette wrote, in the Bulletin I think, about her Club Med New Caledonia experience. Way more interesting was Club Med's detailed response to Lette's review. It had to be 40 years ago as Lette said recently she was in her early 20s when she made this trip. In the recent reference to it she mentions a romantic entanglement that I cannot recall in the original. Maybe it was there. What I do remember from the original story was Lette hanging shit on everyone and everything. So sour. But it was the Club Med response that made the original story memorable. Suffice to say I have since taken everything Lette says with a grain of salt.

I don't know if you ever see this Cathy but I am one of the main characters you and Gabriel Kerry. Wrote about in your first book I'm happy you have had success in your life . But I have listened to you tell the story of your interaction with my group of friends growing up. And you know you and Gabriel where never close to any of us and where outsiders to our group you spent very little time with any of us . Your book pubity blues was written as thou you where part of our inner circle and much of your book was full of misinformation and made up narative And at the end of your book was insulting you made judgmental comments and what some of our futures would be . So please tell the truth and stop living a false reality of those times . And. If your wondering who this is I went to school with you n Gabriel and I was there I lived it l was a major character in your book .

Jules reminds me of James Fleet. Geoffrey may have high functioning autism.
