Combat Mission Units: WW2 British Rifle Company

A quick guide to British Rifle Companies in Battle for Normandy and Fortress Italy. This also applies to rifle infantry using Commonwealth ToE, so the Canadians, Poles, New Zealanders, South Africans and Indians.
Mods-wise I'm running the ubiquitous HQS sound mod, Vin's Geometric icons and Vein's effects.
Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea). You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront.com and especially the forums.

One of the major advantages of a British Rifle Section compared to a US Rifle Squad is that the Bren Gun is considered the organic firepower of the section, and as such, casualties don't really affect the firepower of a section against infantry. A British Rifle Section could be down by half strength, but as long as the Bren Gun is operable, the section still is operational as a piece of combat power. Compared to a US Rifle Squad, which by half strength, loses a significant amount of firepower since troops cannot efficiently operate two M1 Garands at once, and dual-wielding is off the table. This reliance on the Bren Gun was seen to be more resistant to casualties and attrition by the Brits (as long as someone picks up the Bren Gun if the operator goes down), which also applies to the Germans as well, with their reliance on MG34/42s.

I cringed at the sight of an entire platoon being lost in that truck, one of the many reasons as to why foot slogging is such a better alternative

The SMLE and the No4 are two separate rifles. Both are not “SMLE’s”. The SMLE is the Rifle No1 MK3, and the other being the Rifle No4 MK1. The No4 was not the mass produced version of the SMLE, as the SMLE had been in service since 1902. The No4 was the newest implementation of the Lee Enfield line of rifles.

Nerd alert !! When we were introduced to the rifle it was stated as an SMLE but the pixeltruppen shown was using a Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I (maybe Mk II). No one can escape the gun geeks lol.

The Brits are definitely one of the lower firepower forces to play especially against Germans in urban combat. The Italians are just below them IMO.

I've heard some say that the British often equipped section 2ICs with stens also and that british infantry were often trying to put a bren in the hands 1 out of 4 british troops to no doubt help with the section's firepower issues.

Personally I have always found that the cheap infantry allows you to match the enemy man for man with veteran or even crack units, With a bit of careful firecontrol that allows you to spot and engage the enemy first with significant force

Great video as always. As someone who's only been playing for around 6 months these have really helped with the learning curve and indulged my love of the granular details I likely would never have understood.

Don't forget that fact that with a PIAT it's a giant spring that can really mess your day up if something breaks
