Combat Mission Units: LAVs in CMSF

A look at the USMC and Canadian LAVs in Combat Mission Shock Force 2- the LAV-25 and the LAV III.
In Battlefront's own words:
"Combat Mission Shock Force 2 finally updates the ground breaking Shock Force 1 game setting to the current Game Engine 4 environment. Due to massive changes over the last 10 years of Combat Mission development the updating and upgrading of the original content to current standards was no small task. Most of the 3D models had to be rebuilt, reskinned, and reintegrated into brand new TO&E coding. All original scenarios and campaign games had to be checked out, tweaked, and generally improved so they retained the balance and excitement of the originals. Fans of the original game will find that this is much, much more than a new coat of paint."
"Take command of US Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCT) and Heavy Brigade Combat Teams (HBCT) to fight against Syrian Army Infantry, Mechanized and Armored units in an arid setting. Experience the full range of modern threats to conventional military forces, including irregular combat forces, terrorists, spies, suicide bombers, IED's and other deadly tools employed in the asymmetric warfare of the modern day. Play the Task Force Thunder campaign, more than a dozen carefully crafted battles, or unlimited Quick Battles."

    I was talking with a recruiter for the CAF once and he told me two stories of his time in an LAV III and how he survived twp RPG's and a rollover, so they're pretty durable if he wasn't just lucky lol

    Also we don't call it the SRAAWM in Canada, we just call it the Carl G. SRAAWM might be its official name on documents and stuff, but in practical use I have never actually heard it called anything other than some minor variant of Carl Gustav.

    I have, but that was because it was during the old cloth model style EX's in the context of answering where the SRAAWM's were going to be sited, and if special tank hunting groupings were going to be used, and that sort of thing. It was never a name that caught on much outside staff types and their reports.

    The USMC LAV's probably carry empty ammunition liners on the outside of the turrets for crew stowage. No one carries live ammunition externally (apart from the spare smoke grenades which being phosphorous based aren't popular internally). :) Our ASLAVs have provided great service, but we are now moving on to the Boxer with a Puma type turret as part of LAND 400.

    The door in the ramp of the Canadian LAV3 is the Combat Door. I can't say I've used it on the LAV but I sure used it on the old M-113. Things like dismounting to clear hides (and so on) type tasks when you don't want or need the ramp lowered.

    My experiance with the USMC LAV AT is that it was exeedingly frustrating to get working, replaying the Marine campaign and the amount of los issues i had getting the vehicle to see targets was infuriating i had more luck just using the humvee mounted TOWs most of the time.

    I haven't actually taken the LAV-ATs out to a fight yet, so I can't really comment. I can see the TOW humvee having better spotting though- the gunner has a much wider field of view.

    My tip for what it is worth, you're much better off to let the vehicle look in the right direction. You may see the enemy, but the algorithm of the AI doesn't. Plotting targets, I do for area fire only and never looked back. I saw a Sagger on the roof and the Leopard II from a mile away took it out. Every time I try to do it manually it doesn't work. It accounts for 95 % of the 'game sucks' stories.

    @@usuallyhapless9481 is it the same thing with the Tua? Cause that has thermals unlike the lav at(if I remember correctly) and even those have a pretty hard time. The humvee with the launcher outperforms both pretty easily

  • @usuallyhapless9481

    @usuallyhapless9481

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think the TUA is almost certainly bugged at the moment. The humvee's advantage is probably that it's open topped. So the the gunner has a huge field of view to spot targets with, then he can quickly get the TOW optics on target to identify and engage. The LAV-AT and TUA gunners have a much narrower field of view because they have to look through periscopes or magnified optics, so they're much slower at picking up spots to begin with.

    Just played the Koninklijke Landmacht on Iron against Syrian special forces and veteran during a night action. Glad I was not doing it for real. Using standard tactics and using the objective as my killing ground the AI is still as useless as ever. Two Syrians survived it with their morale on panic the Koninklijke Landmacht no losses. I expect the developers of Combat Mission to improve their battle plans for the AI. Don't learn how to master the editor because it takes the fun out of the game as it teaches you how the AI works. I would respect special forces of any country in this game the AI doesn't even make conscript.
