    I once had a AR-15A2 marked rifle that I purchased New. Came with 1/7 A2 barrel, round A2 handguards and stock. Ironically, was a slab side rifle w slickside upper. I think Colt often just dug deep in the parts bins and put civy rifles together as they went.

    I'm gonna purchase a colt A4 as soon as I find one in stock locally, I already have the cash in hand and went to the local gun store yesterday but they didn't have any in stock but they took my info. But I would also love to get my hands on an early model AR-15 as well, maybe I'll find one at a pawn shop.

    Far better? I like the SP1 and in all truth they're obviously very similar rifles. The Sp1 is nicely balanced and a bit lighter. Love the rifle with light bullets. The A4 is somewhat superior though. Given a choice I'd say the A2 is a better rifle all the way around.

    While I do like some of the later things like flat top receivers for better adding optics.... I do still Prefer the old 1/12 twist barrels and M193 55gr ammo, I never took a like to the 1/7 twist and M855 green tip ammo. Its less effective on people overall.

    Not a big SP1 fan. I bought an AR15 A2 HBAR in 1989. In 2001 I bought a Colt CAR A3 HBAR Elite AR-15 ( #CR6724, flat top, 24" stainless HBAR, free float handguard no sights included) and I recently added an AR15 A4 HBAR. In between I tried carbines, AR pistols, tacticool stuff, etc. I recently sold all the carbines, pistols and tacticool stuff and bought the A4. I have not found any variant that shoots as good and functions so perfectly as the full size rifle. That's it, that's all, that's what I am sticking with. All have "iron sights" (The match rifle has a precision micrometer rear and "ladder mounted" globe front sight. The A2 and A4 are for Service Rifle competition and the CAR A3 is for Match Rifle competition. As of 2017 Colt still sold the CAR A3 as a complete upper assembly, but not as a finished rifle. I do not see it in their current catalog IMHO the A2 and A4 are also the best damn looking AR15s...FWIW.

    Nice video but you left out a few outside (solid butt plate vs hollow, the 3 prong flash hider vs cage and trigger group differences between earlier 64 and later SP1s. The lower says 223 on the side but you have to check the barrel to see if it is made for 5.56. All the pencil barrels I've seen are not stamped 5.56 and are 1:12 twist to use .223 ammunition no greater than 55gr. 5.56 has higher pressures supposedly NOT supported by the thinner barrels and the 1:12 twist supposedly doesnt stabilize heavier gr bullets. Some say use 40gr but my 76 SP1 is dead accurate with 55gr. There is also supposedly a head space difference in the barrel between 5.56 and .223. Twist rates 1:7, 1:9 and 1:12 all are technically specific to ammo for accuracy.

  • @generalarmamentcompany

    The inside of the SP1 lower and other older AR15 lowers dont have a sear web like the new Colts, but the receiver of the SP1 still requires machining to "drop in" select fire components (full auto hammer, disconector, and auto sear) without machining lower shelf and machining it out for a true auto sear with the auto sear pin hole drilled as well. As far as it being stamped .223 all ar15 rifles made by colt are chambered for 5.55 even if receiver is marked .223. Having a pencil barrel doesnt affect the ability of it to handle 5.56 even though pressure is higher. The bullet weight that you mentioned is correct, 1/12 will stablilize 55 grain only, both 5.56 and .223

  • @cs-rj8ru

    @cs-rj8ru

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@generalarmamentcompany He's talking about the shelf inside the receiver in regards to drop in auto sears. I don't really consider a little machining height to be a "major" difference here as drop in auto sears for the most part are illegal. (Not many papered).

  • @generalarmamentcompany

    Thanks for your comment. Under the handguards the barrel profile is the same. Yes the inside of the lowers and the twist are differences. I was mostly pointing out the exterior cosmetic/design differences. If I made notes before the video its easier to be extremely detailed and not miss anything but when doing non scripted videos its easier to forget details than most people realize.

    There’s no this vs that argument here because the scenario is one of product improvement, the systems are still the same, but clearly the A2 was vastly more versatile with bullet drop compensation sight and a 1/7 twist. The A4 improves further with flattop receiver which can accommodate specialized optics having range finding/BDC capabilities.

    Actually the engraving on the lower determines what it is. If you take an M16A1 and put an M4 upper, stock, and buffer on it it's still an M16A1 technically.
