I would love to see a neutral tint showdown, with the Schmincke payne's grey included alongside their neutral tint (their neutral tint seems to be the warmest of the main artist brands). QOR and M. Graham are the only ones I've found so far that don't use a black pigment, so it would be interesting to compare how they mix.

Winsor and Newton is the one standing out the most to me here and looks beautiful.

William Payne asked Winso for a ready mix to give it to his students to have a fast ready one. They made it for him , because you need exactly the same hue for a picture where all the distance is only made b-grey. He was a master teacher for Londons noble society.

Very interesting to see all the side by side information. I have a Sennelier Payne's Grey and would have replaced it with Daniel Smith as DS is a good price in my area. The low tinting strength of the DS concerns me a bit so I'm leaning toward the WN as a cooler grey that also doesn't have the low tinting strength and rewetting issues. So great to make choices armed with so much knowledge. Many thanks!

Ohhh I hope there is sap green because that varies so much from brand to brand that it would be nice to see the differences

W&N is my favorite hue of Payne's Grey, but I REALLY love the M Graham in mixes! I think I'll continue to use the W&N because I just can't get past the gloopy-ness of the M Graham. I can't get the tinting right as quickly as I can with other colors.

I know what you mean Heidi, honey based paints do tend to have the gloopy texture that can be hard to get used to (I find it hard to get used to too).

I have the M Graham and I just love mixing it with Indigo for nice, deep galaxy backgrounds. I tried the W&N one but it just wasn't for me. Maybe next time for the control factor I'll try the Holbein. I'm slowly building up a 12 color palette for a Portable Painter's range that I want to get in the future, and Payne's Gray for me will be a definite must have. But MGraham would just be too runny for it, as much as I love MGraham :)

Yes, M. Grahams are not best for travel palettes. Holbein's one sets up nicely though. I hope you like it Tsukabu.

Oooo, the M. Graham looks so nice to me on its own, but holy heck balls those mixes have me feeling all the ways. I need it now. It was already in my cart so this is my 'sign'. As always, thank you for existing.

I SEE NOW WHY THE SCHMINCKE PAYNES GRAY IS SO DIFFERENT THE PR 101 IS NEUTRALISING THE PB29 ( ultramarine blue) AND THEN THEY ADD BLACK, STRANGE THANK FOR THE VIDEO

The tube of paint I have seems bluer than the one you have on your sample page for some reason. Maybe I have funny eyes, haha! Unless it is because the others are even bluer by comparison. At any rate, Payne's Grey is one of my favourite colours/tints; I have been doing quite a few monochrome paintings using just that. It's fun for portraits!

Good morning Dr. Oto. Thank you for this color showdown!! Based on this I'm pretty happy with my Holbein Payne's Grey as well as my DS. I find the Holbein to be a little darker and better at glazing, but they are fairly similar. I'm curious to know if you think that the fact that the Holbein has both a red and a blue included in the mix contributes to better glazing and color harmony, or if it makes a difference at all. I enjoy the dark value of the Holbein and don't mix it too often so low tinting is rarely a problem. I am surprised to hear that, though, since it is so dark. As a side note, Daniel Smith just dumped a heap o' new greys on us!! I can't wait to hear what you think about that. It also reminds me that having a choice of only 100 colors or so can actually be an advantage. Sometimes trying to choose a Daniel Smith Palette can be overwhelming. Thanks!

I know what you mean about DS having so many choices. Some are so similar too. I have mixed feelings about their new greys, we can make so many beautiful greys just by mixing complimentary colors.

I have a Payne's Grey from Schmincke but a more blue version of it. The "Schmincke Payne's Grey" is really looking like a neutral tint to me. Hopefully there would be something in the green tones next time. It would be interesting I guess.

Paynes grey (almost) always reminds me of the sea at night and Schmincke looks like thunder clouds and rain. I have never considered mixing Payne's grey with yellow and oh my goodness, those beautiful olive greens!

I agree with you, they make a really clear and lovely range of olive greens!

Schmincke have two versions : payne's grey bluish number 787 and schmincke payne's grey number 783.

M Graham is awesome.

Very inspiring! Is part of the reason the Holbein and Daniel Smith getting stepped values because they have little to no flow agent? I love both Sennelier and M Graham because of the higher flow.

This is a great series :) I would probably opt for Qor's payne's grey even though it is ridiculously expensive. It was a toss up for me between Qor and M. Graham, but I seem to always have issues with the texture of the mass tones in M. Graham paints, plus they're so sticky in my palettes that it's just not worth the fuss, in my opinion. Also, Qor's payne's grey isn't made with ivory black, which I always try to avoid. Thank you so much for the comparison, it was incredibly informative. I don't use this color currently, but I think the hue is similar to Sodalite Genuine which I love, and it would make a nice non-granulating alternative.

I still love the hue of Winsor & Newton's the most. But M.Graham mixes look incredible! These episodes made me wonder how Neutral tints would stack up to each other

The Schmincke one is so odd. I think it's my favorite, but that feels like cheating because it doesn't look like a Payne's Grey at all XD

It is odd, because there are two Schmincke colors "Schmincke Payne's Grey (No. 783 - PR101, PB29, PBk7) and "Paynes Grey bluish (No. 787 - PBk6, PB15:6)... 😅

I really like the sennelier, schmincke and cassart ones. Its interesting to see how the sennelier and jacksons differ even though they are supposed to be the same brand.

Thanks Oto. I liked W&N. But for the money and Over all performance I think I'll replace it when I'm out with M Graham. I'll just keep a little Cotman tube when I want a good salt effect as I think it is as good as their professional line for what I would use it for.Thanks again. All the best. Take care. 💙

It seems a little silly that for Van Gogh, you say "Oh there's color flaring here, I would rule this out for my usage, ew" but for Daniel Smith, the exact same thing happening gets the excuse "Oh it's okay don't worry, I used a lot more water than usual here" ... or maybe Van Gogh just has a great product that competes with things 3x its price and deserves a lot more respect?

The Grey was invented not for mixing. W. Payne used it for atmospheric impressions in the middle distance , as an only colour ! Read wiki one Paynes and his grey. Don't mix up with Edgar Paynes, an American oil painter. William is the right one ! Most painters today ( amateurs only ) dont know the use of this color !
