Cologne (CGN) | Pilots + cockpit view | Airbus approach from the coal mines + landing on runway14L

Eurowings Airbus A319 approach and landing on runway 14L at Cologne CGN / EDDK or Köln Bonn airport, Germany. Cockpit, pilots, sidestick and PFD (primary flight display) view. With cockpit audio. First Officer is pilot flying and Captain pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 8XG (Eurowings Eight Xray Golf). Airplane Registration: D-ABGP. Produced with 5 cameras in 4k quality.
This approach passes by the large brown coal mines, Fühlinger See, Ford Car Produktion Plant, Cologne Horse Race Track, Rhine River, Bayer Leverkusen Plant, Leverkusen Airport and several Interstates (Autobahn). Thanks for watching and for your feedback! Normally we would like to land for performance reasons into a headwind. 5 knots tailwind are ok for the Airbus and the long Cologne runway. But we do not want to see more than 10 under normal circumstances. On some days, winds are changing a lot and tower cannot change the runway for every takeoff and landing. That would be impossible. Also the winds are sometimes on the ground opposite to the winds during approach.

    Thanks again for the upload. You have got the camera angle for the PFD perfect - it adds a lot to the video, because we can see what the plane is doing - as well as you! Cologne reminds me of my local airport in the UK - East Midlands (EGNX). That too has developed as a cargo hub, which gets busy early evening and overnight - with big cargo terminals for DHL and Fedex and others

    Thanks for your detailed feedback! I agree, I like the PFD camera insert too. In this video, I corrected it for the (not that straight) recording angle. It is interesting to see the peak traffic hours at the cargo hubs in the middle of the night instead of the day peaks at the non cargo hub airports.

    Keith, nice to hear that you like th PFD now better! I was working on the Cologne video as you left your comment about the PFD angle. So I could improve it right away. I also like it much more now. The editing progam has way more work to do but it is worth it. Thank you again for the suggestion. I would love to do a Jersey video. I think Jersey is a CAT C airport due to the short runway. I already fly to several other CAT C airports like Funchal, Samos, Salzburg. There is no limit in CAT C airports per pilot. But we have to fly to the CAT C airports on a very regular basis and do simulator training to stay current. So I believe that I do not fly to Jersey soon. I am sorry about that.

    It's so cool when the Captain is so encouraging and complimentary of the First Officer. What's a "VLS check"? I've not heard that on a final approach before.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the nice words! VLS stands for „lowest selectable speed“. It is the lowest speed the airplane will fly with the autothrust engaged. Even if you dial in a lower speed, the plane will not fly slower than VLS. The VLS is depending on the present airplane weight and is the basis for the speed target calculation during our approach. In the Airbus which we used, there are 2 different sources for the VLS. One VLS is indicated on the MCDU and one on the PFD. It is the top of the amber line in the speed scale (you can see it in the video). The MCDU-PFD is calculated on the basis of the zero fuel weight which we entered from the loadsheet. To this weight, the weight of the current fuel on board is added and the VLS is calculated on the basis of that weight. The PFD VLS is calculated on the basis of an independent weight calculation which the airplane is doing (FAC computer) on the basis of aeodynamical data (angle of attack measurement …) and the entered CG value from the loadsheet. During the final approach when we are in landing configuration, we check both speed indications. If the PFD VLS is higher than the MCDU VLS, we add that difference manually to the approach speed in the MCDU. This is done because the MCDU approach speed is the basis of the approach speed target calculation of the autoflight system.

    Thanks for watching and your feedback! I also would like to put more of the Airbus screens in the videos. First on the list is the navigation display which is the one next to the PFD and also may be one of the ECAM screens. This is much more difficult as I originally thought because the possible camera locations are very limited. But I hope to find a solution soon. For example the ND is already recorded together with the PFD. But due to the angle, reflections are so bad that it is unreadable and not useable.

    Great Video. Saw the EGLL one. I'm hooked on these. Looking forward to more. Thank you. Question though. Apart from the obvious Black Boxes, (and obviously simulators) is there any data that you as a pilot can access, that shows your landing perfomance on any given flight, even this one? i.e. Landing rate, G's, centreline/glideslope deviation, etc?

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and your feedback! All the flights parameters have to be recorded. As far as I know, the data are sent after the flights automatically to the safety department. The data are used for trend analysis and if parameters are out of or near limits, the crews can be contacted to discuss the reasons …. Pilots can also request to see data of a certain flight. This is usually done, if something unusual happened or so. But under normal cicrumstances, there is no reason to do that because as crew we keep all the parameters in the prescribed limits. If the localizer or glideslope or other parameters deviate, we both see it, the pilot monitoring makes a call and the pilot flying will correct it or does a go around if the approach gets unstabilized. In the very unlikely event that both pilots saw the deviations differently, a later look in the data will for sure be available and may help to clarify what happened. You also asked about the Gload at landing. If we are interested in knowing that exact value, we could generate a report after each landing which shows the Gload. But also here, our passengers and we know after the landing, if it was soft or a more positive landing, even without the report.
