If Illinois implemented the Kingfisher, which I hope to God they won't, you would be able to take her. Yes, the student lead Kingfisher task force wants to implement the mascot as female as only the female species of Belted Kingfisher (which this is) have orange in their color scheme. They want our school to have the only female mascot. Could you please talk some sense into this group that the Illini fanbase would be mocked if it gets implemented? I would rather stay with a Block I. Both Indiana and Michigan don't have sideline mascots and neither should Illinois.

I think that sounds pretty cool actually. Maybe y'all would get a light blue and orange alt uni that would be awesome. Although I think fighting illini is a better/more fun mascot I don't understand why changing your mascot to a bird (with cooler colors) would be bad. Could you explain?

@@goatclub6943 Here is the TLDR version of the story but it is much more detailed than this. The university used to had Chief Illiniwek but the NCAA said we had to retire it for being hostile and abusive. We were able to keep the name Fighting Illini because the name predated the Chief. That name is not supposed to be retired. The Kingfisher movement is nothing but a bullying tactic to get Illini fans to stop associating Native American imagery with Fighting Illini. They have made this clear in their mission statement. The idea still needs to be approved by the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees but there is a long way to go before that happens. Most of those who supported the Chief knows he is not coming back and would rather have no mascot at all like Indiana. However this small group is making a lot of noise going around campus with their own costume and acting like this bird is now the mascot when it is not. This group and their followers are not the type of people you see at the games. In 2020 only about 4000 students of 45000 liked this idea. This is making a lot of alumni, donors, and long time fans angry as we feel that we are being left out of the university's official decision making process.
