My infantry unit was sent to the Horn of Africa in 2003, just after a tour in Afghanistan. We were in some camp with a French name and a bunch of Legionnaires. This band, dude...they flew out from the States to play for us. Where we were my dudes, was not safe at all. The band is crazy. There I am in the Camp French cantina, having a Heineken, watching Collective Soul play live to maybe a couple hundred Marines and Legionnaires. They played everything, a full set. If they were nervous, they didn't show it. It's one of the fondest memories I have from the time and in a sea of bad memories. The Marine Corps has two bands as far as I'm concerned, and these cats are one of them. Total class.

It was November 1995. I was 15 and this song had just released as a single. I was in Wal-mart (before the super walmarts) with my mom when saw the single on cassette and asked her to buy it for me. I remember so vividly listing to it on the way home in the 1991 chevy S-10 while looking out at the over cast November sky. I know this isn't some profound memory but it's still one I am very fond of. This song always takes me back to that time. The 90's were awesome. Anytime I play I gig, I make sure I cover this song using my 12 string.

Any memory evoked with such emotion after that many years is profound. Our memories are our stories about who we are. This is a lovely moment and it gave me joy, thank you for sharing. Edited to say I was 24 in 1995 and suicidal. I remember seeing the video and sob/laughing along with the actor when the bird landed on him as he prepared to jump. The absurdity of the world and the longing in the singer's voice helped me get perspective, if only for one little moment. And I've been able to hold on to that for 25 years of building little moments to stop me from falling.

Not me - I stayed close to the stage and danced and sang with the real fans and didn't mind getting soaked. The band played an encore, despite joking about their risk of electrocution, because they appreciated our enthusiasm! It was a great concert - what an awesome band!

It's kind of funny. You see a million comments like this on various songs from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's... even the early 2000's. And then it just stops. And if you look at the hard numbers, year by year since then, the suicide rate in this country has just slowly risen and risen and risen. And we blame society and we blame bullying and we blame all sorts of boogymen, but they're boogymen that ALWAYS EXISTED. Maybe the reason kids are killing themselves is because the music went to utter shit, and that feeling that we got when we were 16 and sad that SOMEBODY UNDERSTOOD WHAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH isn't there for these kids now. Fucking tragic.

Had the pleasure to watch them live back in 2008, here in Peru. Still the most pristine performance I've ever attended, and I'm a veteran concert attendee. Everything was perfectly played. They fell in love with my country. They came back one year after to play at the city of Arequipa for its anniversary in front of 30,000 people and the crowd loved them.

Awesome story thanks for sharing! I had the privilege of seeing them in 2000 and like you said, they were on point. I remember them covering Pink Floyd's 'Mother' and being blown away. I've also seen a lot of shows, and it still ranks in the top 10 for me. Peace!

@@mat11trick Funny how music like this can have a timeless message and the message always emerges in times of need. Look at NY, all the crisis over there, and here you have a song with a strong message about helping each other and being positive. The message can easily be applied to any city in the world because the world needs to be strong now. After many years of having left the strings behind, I'll pick my guitar again. I need to play this song and any other that can send good vibes to my friends and relatives.

@Debra Jones I watched a Live concert video the other day (Live, the american 90's band) and the crowd was so full of youngsters. I thought well that's great, but then I also noted that there were many older people. Thing was, the guys from our generation had brought their teen children over to the gig so they can enjoy what a good rock concert sounds like. Watching that was heart warming and kind of sad at the same time. We've grown old, but we enjoyed the best times of rock music. Just like the great Robbie Williams said onstage: "Get old with me!!" Hahaha.

I'll bet Peru is so beautiful ❤️ I grew up listening to rock. This was one of my favorites, though I was only 9 when it came out, I was born in December of 1985. And my mother was stuck in the 80's and loved the 90's. Not the Ricky Martin part of the late 90's. But the early and mid 90's. When rock was still amazing, and so many fresh faced bands were passionate about life and figuring it all out! Bands like Live, Candle Box, REM, Dishwalla, 4 Non-Blondes, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Goo Goo Dolls, Sound Garden, and so many others I wish I could name them all lol. It was an amazing time to be a child and growing up hearing these bands so much so, that it not only shaped my tastes in music, but shaped me as a human being. I've always been such a sensitive person who cares about my own integrity, and how I feel about myself, my ideals, my standards, and how I reflect what I take in back into the world. And I think a lot of people who were raised on superficial music that didn't have real meaning, but was catchy, are like that type of music. They have no real substance, they're cool to party with, but flee when shit gets rough. They're fair weather friends. But I am a friend through it all. I'll hurt with you, share your happiness and your defeat. I'll uplift you when you need to be reminded of your value, remind you to be humble when you're on top of the world, I'll weather the storm beside you and help you rebuild when it's over. When I love, I mean it and don't give up easily. And when I'm done, I'm gone forever!

All the words that I've been reading Have now started the act of bleeding Into one, into one So I walk up on high And I step to the edge To see my world below And I laugh at myself While the tears roll down 'Cause it's the world I know Oh it's the world I know I drink myself of newfound pity Sitting alone in New York City And I don't know why, don't know why So I walk up on high And I step to the edge To see my world below And I laugh at myself While the tears roll down 'Cause it's the world I know Oh it's the world I know So I walk up on high And I step to the edge To see my world belo And I laugh at myself While the tears roll down 'Cause it's the world I know Oh it's the world I know 💕🙏
