You'd be surprised what they had... I had pages and pages of text walkthroughs that my dad printed out, to point and click adventure games like King's Quest, Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis, etc. I had no idea how to play those games otherwise, I was so young. And that was the early to mid-90s. We didn't have videos, sure, but there was probably someone out there that broke down how to get every gem in some kind of list. But my dad was a pretty tech-savvy nerd like me. He probably knew how to use the web before it was an everyday utility in basically every home, especially considering phones. It just wasn't in everyone's pocket like it is today.

There's no better feeling than when you discover these secrets yourself without the help of guides. I remember discovering the secret route to the green and purple gems and I was like *gasp* "Noooooooooo way".
That’s why we had strategy guides.
You have to give it to the game developers for making such an amazing yet difficult game for it's time.

Crash 2 isn't difficult.
Once I found out about the secret warp room from the very obvious telegraphing in Bear Down (the islands after the bear section) from there it became just a matter of figuring out where the other secret warp room entries were. I loved figuring it out for myself as a kid.
Crash 1 gems are badass You need all boxes and never die Not forget hidden places, which shocked me that the hard low graphic game is so well built

Crash 1 was the right amount of slightly-more-difficult when getting gems. It's About Time was Crash 1 difficulty on crack. Personally I prefer the "I'll die once or twice but I'll get it" difficulty of 2 and Warped gems.

One of my favorite moments of all time was when i got the red gem, i knew those crates looked kinda suspicious and i tried to reach that suspiciously out of reach platform, and man, when i reached and i got teleported to a secret area, that feeling was indescribable, 12 yo me never felt something like that, it felt like i found the batcave, it was awesome

You can get the red gem without going to the creek level, slide spin-jump and then body slam to get the last extra height to grab the gem. Lol, i remember doing that as a kid

That red gem was sitting there taunting us 😂
Back in 1997 it was a case of asking other kids that had completed it. No internet back then 😂 Great vid tho
The one with the terradactale is pure evil
And that's why I only focused on collecting the crystals not the gems
Wish I had the internet back in the 90s to look this shit up. That game was brutal
Doing this as a kid was an actual adventure i really thought i was a shirtless mutant bandicoot in blue shorts
I kid you not, the way I did Air Crash like that to get back to Snow Go was pure intuition. The platform looked tantalising and those boxes seemed like fun bouncing breakables so I just bounded over the river, landed on the platform and before I could think “Great. Now what? I can’t go back”, I was warped to the secret warp room.
I actually managed to find most secrets without Internet as a kid by just being curious, lol
I think Crash 2 did it best, figuring out how to get the colored gems felt very rewarding. It’s a system that encourages curiosity & thinking outside the box.

I was kinda crazy as a child, I'd go to places just because I thought I could so I got the red gem through just being a nosy little bastard. Only one I fully missed and needed help for in crash 2 was the fake nitro boxes warp
I like how old game devs instead of hold our hand they Just german suplex us to the ground 😂
Crash 4: am I a joke to you?
Collecting Gems was a HUUUUUGE pain for me! Took me like 15 frickin' years to get em all.
I'm just glad loosing a life doesn't negate all crates broken in 2&3.
That was the all fun at the era that we had no internet access
I remember when I stumbled across that secret warp room by accident when I was a kid. I was so amazed, I thought I made a major discovery haha. Good times
At least they knew how to make there secrets a secret. Wrath of cortex were like. You got 5 relics now here is a warp room full of levels we scrapped and did not finish
Look at little penguin jr. Gonna cry?😂
Those Crash gems
Yooo what the fuck on the Pterodactyl part, playing these games since childhood and never knew this
Don't forget the steel crates giving you the finger
This was fun, let's encourage devs to make stuff like this again.
You make it sound like the original trilogy was incredibly difficult (LOL!)
I actually got the red gem by trying really hard and only learn the secret much later. When Crash N.Sane Trilogy came out, it put a smile on my face when they deliberately put red gem higher.
OMG. I had blocked the memory of how infuriating this was! Aaaaannd now it’s all back.
Cold Hard Crash gave me my stripes as an all time veteran because that level boyyyy
Many platformer games of ps1 were so difficult for completionist. Frustrating is probably an understatement
Sure, it was a total pain in the butt to get all the gems, but oh, man, it was one hell of an achievement.
Games like Crash and DK County are games that I sometimes find necessary to look up a guide to 100%
Word of mouth went hard back then
Good ol’ gamepro magazine
Found all of them when I was 8, without internet, back in 2000. As we age we have less Time to explore our games. But Crash 2 is one of my favorite game due to those secret level.
Fun fact even if you do all that level to get the red diamond, you can still miss it.
I should find my save from back when I was a kid because I remember having tryharded to find all the gems and I don't remember if I did it, but I knew about the secret warp zone
Imo the only impossible one was the Eggipus Rex level (how to get there). The gem challenges were so fun for me!
I've never forget that sufferable effort of me and my parents getting exactly these gems just the same way as it's shown right there ..
There is also a bug where you can get the yellow gem by jumping on some carpet and going behind the screen on the platform in the back.
The yellow gem is possible to get by slide double jump spin mashing from the right side at the end of the level to the left where the platform would normally take you back from if you got it the normal way. However the camera won't follow you back there so you're going in blind.
this is so cryptic i love it so much
The Yellow Gem and Red Gem are both possible with glitches lol
There's an easier way. Use the slide on the metal bounce crate, then jump and spin at the same time to reach extra height and then slam. It takes a few tries but it works. But it doesn't work in the remake since the red gem is placed higher.
That's why when i was a kid, completing crash bandicoot 2 100% is like a goddamn accomplishment. Because at the time, we haven't had internet yet You just like, explore here and there, and then suddenly you got teleported to a secret level As for the two secret levels in crash bandicoot 3, my cousin told me about them
I also remember trying to get all of the gems too in the Crash Bandicoot games.
Let’s not forget that gem in Crash 4 where you have to play all of Dragon’ On without breaking a single crate
@johnnysasaki

just like the Blue Gem in Crash 2
Tbf most of the secrets were given pretty clear tells. All apart from the pterodactyl and that sign in the motorcycle level.
This is like donkey Kong 64 type of pain
Did that all by accident today 😂
Crash Bandicoot 4 is one of the hardest... 😩
Another reason why the original Crash game is the best
Back in the ps1 days as a kid, I was able to find all the colored gems in Crash 2 except the yellow gem. Reason being, i never understood what the timer meant, nor could i tell it was a yellow gem by the coloring of the gem slot. After looking back at it, the blue gem shouldve been the elusive one.
I already got all the special and normal gems from crash 1, it was painful but worth it 😅
As a fellow penguin I’m here to say that this is true
@UnitedStatesOfAmericaIRS

I've committed mass genocide on penguins in crash bandicoot
Dont forget the one with the Nitro boxes where you have to jump on top of them. You have to be very observative and realize that these boxes aren't moving at all compared to the real nitro boxes.
U GOTTA have 2 Aku-Aku masks before entering that hidden "Snow-Go" level to destroy all those Nitro crates. But u gotta have some GREAT PRECISION to GET to the "Level 07" outer space warp room when jumping across those boxes or via the end of the baby polar bear level
Collecting all the gems in Crash 4 is a headache too but only because it's so repetitive
Oh that happen too me when i play the n sane toulgy of crash im like what the hell
I didn't have the internet. I had to figure all this stuff out myself.😑
It’s also entirely possible to fall past the red gem if you happened to press to hard into the sides
I’m currently replaying CB2 on my PS1 & without KZread I have no idea how people figured out how to actually complete this game!
The mystery is what made the game so great
Red gem: spin the box to stop bouncing, scoot+jump towards gem, then hit square to flop, takes a few tries but once you do you can now finiah the first two warp rooms 100% no backtracking
never got all the gems but I found all the secret levels in crash 2 without help like the fake wall in Eal Deal and the Nitro box staircase in Behaving the platform that sent you back to the snow level was one of the easiest to find.
It added replayability.
Crash Bandicoot games are 3D platforming purgatory!
The red gem can be obtained off the bouncey box in snow go, it only works on PAL version of the game that's what I've heard
whew back then u had to have had the video game magazine guides for help. then shortly after gamefaqs was created but not many used it back then until the late 90's and early 2000's
As a kid, playing these games, I always thought the developers were trying to be cynical
Hooray for remakes, i guess.
On the metal box you have to slide jump and while in mid air do a body slam
Its called getting good. In the old days of gaming you had to figure this stuff out or get a strategy guidebook.
First 3 games and the racing one are all that matters. Though I found some crazy ps1 crash games in japan like one thats a ton of mini games and one that like smash bros but crash
I did it in so many years in ny childhood...but only in 2 days few days ago. The only realy hard thing in the old crash games are the relic platines in crash 3
Honestly I think that crash 2 is way much more tricky one to get the gems just like crash it's about time. How the heck am I supposed to know there is secret wall behind the nitro boxes
@MagcargoMan
Жыл бұрын
I figured it out on my own, but it was completely by accident. I was looking for the gem and was in that dead-end room with all the nitro crates because I always found it suspicious, and I decides to jump behind the nitros at the back, probably to see if the door would open or something. I noticed I was clipping into the wall partially and I thought it might have just been a bad hitbox but I keep going until I disappeared entirely and then I realised it was a fake wall. Crazy devs.
can't believe I figured it out by my self whole I was 10 years old 100% in every crash game and when the remastered came I had to google it
That red gem in Snow go Crash 2. Is like this... slide(against the wall) and jump+spin and body slam bcs that increases the height and you get the gem. Yellow gem in Crash 3 is similar to the red gem in Crash 2 its in a completely different level.
Still easier than collecting all of them the remaster trilogy
I just can't ever bring myself to complete crash 3 because of the relics. You can go to hell if you think I'm getting a gold relic on every stage after already getting every gem in every stage
Looked up on the Internet. Ha. I was 9 when I used something called a cheat book. That I still have.
I dunno, that platform that takes you to the Snow Go red gem route was one of the first ones I found, and it was the 90's and we still had dial up at the time Now, that pterodactyl in Crash 3? Yeah, I had to look that up years later lol
In the original it was also possible to slide on the ice too far to the right so when you dropped down you could miss the hitbox for the red gem and have to do it allnover again 💀 Thankfully the remake doesn't have that issue
