    We have had a small pond in our garden for many years, lots of spawn and baby frogs but last 2 years the spawn has died off. I want to take some out as back up this year. I dont know why i didnt do this years ago as my kids would have loved to have been able to watch them grow more closely. They are ages 11 and 8, so hopefully still will enjoy

He has a set of plastic frogs ranging from tadpoles, frog poles, froglets, junior and adult frogs. Loves lining them up next to the tank for ‘morale support’ 🤣🐸 keep up the good work Greg. I am in Tropical Darwin NT Aus and this is my 2nd year raising Green Tree Frogs Tadpoles. I have a shallow plastic tray with stones in the bottom and a few plants . The water constantly needs changing and I thought of a small aeration pump but listening to your video maybe I won't. Just keep changing the water twice a week. Most informative and best video after trolling through many. Thanks Greg

    Sorry for the late reply, must have missed your comment. I think the best thing is add as many plants as you can, they're great for keeping the water clean. I've never used pumps or aeration devices, but I have been told by others that there are some filters that might work safely without risk of sucking up the tadpoles. But I have no experience with them, so wouldn't know what to recommend.

    Great setup! I’m glad you use live plants, however it might be best if you did add a filter. Many standard filters are NOT suitable for tadpole as they will suck up the tadpoles like you mentioned, however air powered sponge filters are very gentle and safe to use. This allows the water to easily stay oxygenated and give a black for beneficial bacteria to colonize.

    That is an incredible amount of spawns!! I have a pond for my turtle I made and the smaller one she grew out of has now become my frog pond. When I first moved here ( Western Kentucky) there were so many frogs, then they disappeared. Well since getting my turtle out of the small pond there have been some frogs there. So I caught some frogs from a client's home, strangely they would hide in the bales of hay, and brought them to my pond to add new friends. Well, they have been breeding EVERYWHERE!! lol I have tadpoles in 2 of my horse's troughs and even some saw a big ball of them in the turtle pond. Although I think she ate them because I don't see them anymore. 😥 So I am going to get a tank set up and take some from the horse troughs and raise them. Then come spring, release them into the ponds.

    So far tadpoles are doing well in the tank. Quite a few are getting their back legs. Wondering if a few might be Green Tree frogs because I found a small one that still had a nub of a tail. @@GregsWildlife sadly I found a bunch more that haven't made it in the pond. I went to straighten out the pond plant that keeps tipping over and a bunch of fully formed baby frogs floated up. 😢 Is it just too cold for them this late in the season? I have a small heater in there, though the water doesn't feel all that warm. 😕 I've even had a few in my tank die. I have one green tree frog that is fully formed and hanging out on the rocks of the shallow waterpool I made for them. What do they eat at this stage? They are so small.

    Lovely looking tank Greg! Looking forward to seeing the tadpoles swimming around in there :) Speaking of chlorine, I once lived in a house where the water from the tap had so much chlorine in it that I could taste it! I used to boil 4 liters of water for half an hour every day for drinking and cooking. I had a glass jug to store it in so that I had some drinkable cold water while I waited for the next batch of boiled water to cool enough for use. I'm curious if you think boiling and properly cooling tap water would also be a good way of removing the chlorine for the spawn?

  • @GregsWildlife

    @GregsWildlife

    2 жыл бұрын

    From what I understand, boiling water for 15-20 minutes will remove most of the chlorine, but it will leave a small amount behind, but it's probably good enough. It will at least speed up the process, so you don't have to have the water standing for a few days.

    Thank you, I'm so glad I could help. I've tried a few different tank setups over the years. I started out with a combined land and water tank, where I had a 'beach' section on one side and water with a few rocks on the other. But I didn't like this as I found frogs were drowning, even though they should have been able to get out of the water. So now I always have two separate tanks, one for tadpoles and one for frogs. Lake water should be fine. There is always a small risk of transferring invasive species or diseases when using water from a different source than from where the spawn came from. Hey Greg! Huge fan of your channel, you were instrumental in my saving of frozen frog spawn 2 years ago 😊 I was wondering if you have any information on telling the difference between frog/spotted salamander eggs if they’re not in their mass? We had a rain storm here (Cape Breton, NS. Canada) and I found some loose eggs flowing along the side of the road, along with half of a spotted salamander. I gently scooped them up and took them home cause my heart broke for them honestly. Usually it’s easy to tell the difference between frog/salamander eggs (I know salamanders have another coat of gel over their eggs so usually it’s easy to tell) but since these aren’t in a clump together and have been separated by running water I can’t quite tell what they are. Just like a few years ago, I also found frozen frog spawn and have them here at home. Should I introduce these new, “loose eggs” into the tank with the other spawn, or give them their own space incase they’re different species? Any advice would be greatly appreciated ❤️

  • @GregsWildlife

    @GregsWildlife

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! I'm so glad my videos helped you :-) We don't actually have salamanders in the UK, so I know very little about them. We do have newts, which are relatives of salamanders. Newts tend to lay eggs singularly, wrapped in a leaf. So, unfortunately, I can't help you there. But I would recommend you keep them in a separate tank from your tadpoles, just in case the tadpoles eat the eggs. It could be exciting to see what they develop into!

    If there is no plants in the tub, then you'll need to provide additional food for them, otherwise they may starve, or start eating each other. Birds will very much want to eat the tadpoles, so if you want to protect them you could cover the tub. Netting would be okay, but obviously as they grow, they'll need to be able to leave the water, so make sure you don't trap them inside.

    Thank you for watching for such a long time! I really appreciate it. I think they will be okay, spawn is pretty tough, that jelly is quite protective.

    @@GregsWildlife thanks, more spawn is in the main frog pond Aswell from my other pond do you think it will get any Desises? With the two mixing you know... Edit: The water is the same in both ponds just one of the frogspawn is fresher

    It's unlikely. It is always a risk when moving spawn from one pond to another, but if the ponds are close by, it's possible they have a shared ecosystem anyway.

    is adding a filter worth it?

  • @GregsWildlife

    It's not necessary. Some filters can be bad, if they create a current in the water you can end up sucking up tadpoles into it as they are not strong swimmers. You can keep the water clean and clear by adding live plants and if the water does start to look dirty, do a partial water change. It should be all you need. Just make sure your tank isn't overcrowded by tadpoles.

    Water from a creek or pond is probably more suitable.

    Hi We want to set up our frog tank for 2023 but haven’t seen any spawn in London and the surrounds. Is this normal or have we missed out already?

    I have heard reports that this year is particularly bad for frogspawn and many ponds that usually have lots are empty. I'd imagine that if a pond is going to have frogspawn it would be there by now. In the London area, I'd think they might have hatched by now, so if you look in shallow areas on warm sunny days, you should be able to see them if they're there.

    Great setup! I’m glad you use love plants, however it might be best if you did add a filter. Many standard filters are NOT suitable for tadpole as they will suck up the tadpoles like you mentioned, however air powered sponge filters are very gentle and safe to use. This allows the water to easily stay oxygenated and give a black for beneficial bacteria to colonize.
