Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

It's the final episode of Frog Watch 2022, so we say goodbye to the frogs as I release them back to the pond I got them from as spawn back at the beginning of this series.

Hi Greg, we took our 6 year old to a local pond earlier in the year and brought 16 tadpoles home in a jar, as ‘first timers’ we watched all the frog watch videos and learned so much. Tomorrow we are going to release 15 healthy young frogs back to the same pond area! Our son has loved the experience and wants to keep them all, but he understands it’s now time for them to go back into the wild, even ‘Taddy the Baddy’ 😂 (and mum says no!) 🙅‍♀️ Thanks for the videos, we’d have struggled without them! 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸

I can’t believe it! After putting one of our froglets in our terrarium, today I can’t find it. I sifted through meticulously the coconut substrate and no frog! He’s only just lost his tail yesterday.

I've had that happen too! I don't know how they do it. They are escape artists sometimes. Or they may hide really well. I searched through the entire tank really carefully and not seen it and then there it is a few hours later sitting in the tank. But there's been times where they're never seen again.

It would be interesting to try a different species. I've heard toads are harder to look after, but I don't know for sure, but I assume they would be fairly similar to frogs. Newts would be really interesting, but yeah, they are much harder to find, and I'd have to be careful about what species they are. Newts are a bit more regulated!

I love you videos. My son rescued 10,000 tadpoles born in an abandoned pool. He brought home 20. We were clueless. They are just now developing back legs so I feel like they are a bit behind but it doesn’t get cold here until December so we still have time. We cried for your lake. Hopefully your drought will break soon.

I've loved watching your videos with the tadpoles. When they turn into frogs and you give them live food can you give them locust? These are a smaller size than the crickets and thought the tiny frogs would eat them better?

  • @GregsWildlife

    @GregsWildlife

    Жыл бұрын

I think anything that fits in their mouths will be suitable. I don't think I've ever seen how small early instar locusts are, but if you think they're small enough then they should be fine. I know that the banded crickets are considered to be quite nutritious, more so than black crickets, but I don't know how they compare to locusts.

Love your videos Greg, so informative and interesting. We have just released over 100 frogs from spawn rescued from a puddle. We have kept one back though as it has pretty bad scoliosis that affects the way it moves and it's much smaller than the others were. Should we just let it go and let nature take its course?

  • @GregsWildlife

Thanks, I'm glad the videos have been useful. I have had a few frogs turn out like that, I don't think many of them lasted all that long. As sad as it is, it's probably best to release it and let nature take its course. But to have just one out of a hundred with a physical deformity, that's really good going, well done!

Thanks, say hi to your daughter for me :-) You're right, I haven't felt right this year, and I guess that's come across in the videos. That's a big reason why I don't want to do Frog Watch next year. I need some time away from this series to recharge the batteries. I think I became a bit disillusioned with the series, I wasn't able to make the videos I wanted to and just ended up remaking videos from previous years, and I didn't want to do that. I hope to do some more videos about other wildlife and regain my enthusiasm.

It's been a tough year all round for nature with the heat and drought so they'd have struggled even more in the wild than normal. Looking forward to seeing your garden pond take shape. Thank you Greg for your Frog Watch series! I'm in France and am taking on my first two batches of frog spawn; one lot are still eggs and the others are a week older and have little tails and have started to wiggle around. We are using large glass jars and keeping both sets separate so that they do not eat each other, when they become tadpoles. They live in the cellar at night and we move them to the window sill in the morning for some natural light. The outside temperatures are occasionally below freezing and we've just had a flood, so we do not want them outside all the time and it means that we keep a daily eye on them and it's a great reason to get out of bed for in the morning! Thank you for all your tips and advice over the years and seasons that you were doing frog watch! And thank you for keeping them on here as there aren't very many videos about keeping frogs in France around! Thanks again and toes crossed that I will get to hear mine sign at night next spring!

Hi Greg. I found 14 tadpoles and raised them to be frogs. I love them so much and I have had them for two weeks now, feeding them and making sure they are ok and safe. I'm afraid I cannot feed them forever though. It's costly and timely. Will they be okay to release now after two and a half weeks of being in my care in captivity? It's weighing heavy on my heart.

Thanks very much for making the entire Frog Watch series! It has been incredibly helpful for me raising toad tadpoles in Canada (it's all very similar). I was quite disappointed with the mortality rate (of about 70 tadpoles, 45 made it to toads and only 8 toads survived the first month) but like you said, their chances of survival in the wild are naturally very low. Look forward to seeing the other videos you put out. All the best

  • @GregsWildlife

Thanks for watching, I'm glad you found the videos useful. The mortality rate was definitely higher than I'd have liked this year, but it has been an unusually tough year for wildlife, even though these have been looked after, the conditions were still harsh and I think that may have contributed.

now then Greg, I felt the same about all the ones I released, hopefully they've found somewhere suitable in this mad dry weather under stone areas and shade, there's no doubt it's going to be tough for them especially froglet's. Thankyou for all your detailed knowledgeable video's and a great education of common frogs reproduction, I absolutely love amphibians and it's always been a massive obsession of mine so when you put a new frog watch video on I find it very enjoyable to watch and love every one of them you do, so thankyou for making it a part of my life aswell. Iam hopefully going to have a pond in my garden 12-18 months or so and where iam here in the middle of North Yorkshire I hope to attract great crested newts!!! and iam aware of there local presence! so getting the right plants for the pond and eco system will be essential, so hopeless all been well we can go on the amphibian watch journey together with our own ponds in the near future, can't wait. TAKE A WELL EARNED REST GREG, THANKYOU FOR YOUR GREAT EFFORTS ALL THE BEST SHAUN.

I am so sorry that this is happening to the plants there, they are all turning brown from the unusual weather. Where i live plants of the forest steppe are adapted to arid conditions so they remain green even after a month with no rain unless they are overgrazed or cut down. I grow wildflowers and i learn more about them every day even inspite of the bad weather, never give up hope, i managed to turn several square meters of desert like soil into an emerald green grassland with native wildflowers.

It's been pretty tough for plants and wildlife this year. Everything is dry and brown. But many of these plants are pretty resilient, especially grass, so with some rain, it should all recover. It's been a bit of a relief as it's been raining most of today, much needed!

  • @GregsWildlife

They're wild animals. All we're doing here is giving them a start out in life. But also, they do not make good pets as adults. There have been reports of them jumping into the glass of their tank and breaking bones. They never learn that the glass is a barrier. If you want a pet frog, there are other species that are more suitable. You shouldn't take animals from the wild and keep them, only go for captive-bred species.
