Collecting COVID Postage Stamps from All Over the World | From the Stacks

Introducing "From the Stacks of the Historical Medical Library!" Throughout this ongoing series, Library staff members will explore our incredible collection of rare medical books and documents that's usually hidden away from visitors. In this video, Library Archivist Rayna Andrews and Administrative Assistant Shirley Choi open envelopes containing recent additions to our collection: pandemic-related postage stamps from all over the world.
Stay tuned for future videos about many of our older objects!

Hi, if anyone is interested, the word on Ukrainian postmark says “ПЕРЕДОВА” (peredova) which translates to “front line”. Picture symbolises doctors and soldiers who fight alongside on front lines to save lives of innocent people. (When pandemic hit in 2020, Ukraine already was in war for 6 years, in case anyone is confused why soldier is depicted on postmark). Hope it helped a little :)

I still think last year was 2019, it's like life stopped for a bit.

Well there goes my illusion that the most obvious choice in a medical museum for opening letters would be a scalpel.

It is cool to see people from other parts of the Mutter! I was hoping for more context, though. Does the library already have a stamp collection? How did people know to send the stamps?

The Swiss one, in red with the white cross was a charity stamp that was sold for 5 franks (a normal one costs 1 CHF) with the profits going to the Swiss Red Cross among others. The text sais 'solidarity' in our four national languages.

Czech Republic had a really cute one, with word "dekujeme"- "thank you" and masks with patterns that represent workers in medical field, police, firefighters, military, post and one that is supposed to represent all volunteers and essential workers, and in 2021 Poland had one with a smiling woman, flexing her biceps with a cartoon band aid on it and hashtag #ostatniaprosta which means i believe "the last straight" (my English is not perfect, but however you call the last portion of a race ) which was a campaign to encourage getting vaccinated.

I think the English phrase you are looking for is "the final stretch". Those sound like really cool stamps.

The Ukrainian stamp could be showing a nurse as a front line worker also. Men are nurses too, just as women can be doctors. Please don't assume

Not sure if being cancelled hurts the value of a stamp, I really only know that imprints of a business or person's name lowers the value of a fountain pen. Doesn't matter to me, however. Tends to just add to the historical value for me. And in some cases, like a gold or silver overlay, it's not an issue, as they had a blank place for an engraving, so look odd without it. I'd bet that uncanceled the value for retail would be more, but, like you said, it's not that important for the museum. Might add to the provenance. 😁

Everyone has forgotten that Ukraine was invaded in 2014, by 2020 it was fighting two wars. The invasion and the pandemic hence "РЕРЕЛОВА" or front on the stamps, then in February 2022 Russia expanded its invasion and the rest of the world decided to honour the agreement signed years ago guaranteeing Ukraine's territory. Слава Украине 🇺🇦
