Since some folks are jumping to conclusions and being reactionary... I already had 5 videos pre-recorded ahead of the Part 1 release. This is the first, the Benedict video is the second. Being embargoed for HALF THE SEASON does limit my ability to talk about Colin and Penelope's love story with the level of detail I would've liked to be able to. If you see other reviewers speaking in more detail about it, that's their choice to make. I'm not interested in risking losing press access from Netflix to future seasons of Bridgerton. More Bridgerton videos are coming, the 2nd Bridgerton season 3 video (the one that's about Benedict, but not ONLY about him) includes a thorough breakdown (and exposing) of what goes on behind the scenes of screenwriting/production for television in Hollywood.

I agree with this entire video. More Bridgertons on Bridgerton. I agree about the Mondriches and the other side plots. Focus on the main characters OR add episodes per season. The Featherington sisters cracked me up (and Mr. Finch is such an adorable cinnamon roll). You really nailed it in this review!! 👍

I understand why you're being cautious. I do, however, think Netflix is being ridiculous. Even AFTER the show's part 1 is open to the public, they put restrictions on what you can say regarding plot? At that point you aren't even spoiling anything. I also agreed with how you like more clarity with them saying which topics are "do not discuss." When things are left vague, there's a risk of being punished by Netflix when you didn't even have the intention to break a rule. Your caution is a natural response to their vagueness.

@@thedevicebook THANK YOU. I’ve had some people nitpicking my lengthy frustration but they’re clearly not listening to how this is an EXTREMELY atypical model of distribution - particularly for this genre - and particularly for something that already has well-circulated and consumed source material - like are you going to tell people reviewing rom coms released in the cinema not to tell the audience that the main couple is going to end up together? And I’ve dealt with numerous studios/platforms over multiple years as film/TV press coverage, so if I’m this frustrated it’s absolutely because it’s THAT WEIRD of a way to do things (for this genre, specifically). And whatever strategy they were going for CLEARLY didn’t work because someone (or multiple people, I have no idea where the leaks came from) was running around spilling everything? Just tell me what my do-not-reveals are and let me talk about a complete love story. 😂

I understand why their secret training needed to be discovered. But I thought that was a mistake. We missed out on some quality suffering from Colin. I wanted him to keep giving her advice and for him to suffer each time his advice worked. Every time Penelope thanked him and said she was gonna get married because of him, he looked like he got stabbed in the chest and I was like more of that please!!! I didn’t care for the distance. We could have saved that for episode 4 if that’s what we needed to do.

I have to say that I HIGHLY enjoyed the awkward conversation Collin and Penelope had under the willow tree after their kiss. Collin is internally screaming, "I've been having very naughty dreams about you, and I can't tell if you've been as affected by that kiss as I have, please give me a hint, PLEASE". And Penelope is trying so hard to keep her cool in front of him. I really liked that we the viewers can see that Eloise still feels very hurt by Penelope, but still cares very deeply for her. She wants Pen to be happy, but not at the expense of lying to her brother. I don't care AT ALL about Tilly Arnold. She seems fine, but I would've rather they spent the time developing Benedict's sense of self to show that he's ready for his own love story.

All these love stories would've benefitted SIGNIFICANTLY if we could bump up the episode count. With a cast this large, we need AT LEAST 13. Even 10 would be an improvement, 8 episodes is NOTHING. 😭 As for Benedict, I've already published a Benedict season 3 video because... that was the first, most visceral train of thought I had when I watched my screeners. 👀

I can forgive Colin not grovelling but I badly want Colin to literally formally court Pen before asking marriage. With all her efforts with Marina, it pains me to see Pen as someone she just ask marriage after the carriage scene. She deserves more than just a few seconds of sweet words. I wanted to see actions that shows assuredly, fervently and loudly that he loves her. As mentioned, Pen is nothing but sad each episode this season, like had she suffered enough in the past two seasons? I would also love for her to say no to his proposal because I never in my mind picture Pen saying yes without telling him first that she is whistledown. She saves him from Marina and yet its like her doing the same thing that Marina did to Colin by not telling her secret identity. Please dont quote me the book because the setup for Marina is sooooo... much different.

I'm gonna be honest I don't know how to feel about them as a couple. I felt like I couldn't be happy about the proposal cause they don't know each other. In the book he purposes after he knows her secret identity and he accepts her fully. Penelope also gets to see the less charming side of Colin and all of the masking he does around people when she agrees to the marriage. I'm hoping this changes with part 2 but at the moment show Penelope and Colin don't really know each other and I don't really know them or their flow🙃

If they keep the ending of this season the same as the book he actually does do a really big grand romantic gesture to show everyone that he loves and adores her. He proclaims it and says he's proud of her and says a lot of other good things. So hopefully they keep that speech in the book and then you will have him publicly showing everyone she's worth love and that he can't live without her.

  • @thedevicebook

I also felt the proposal was lacking. "Are you going to marry me or not?" I am cool with humor being part of their romance (like in "could the carriage not keep going?") however the proposal kind of joke is casual and slightly mean. It was presented as if she had already been asked properly but he was looking for an update after waiting for a while. And it was a bit on the entitled side too. Like he DESERVES her hand in marriage. I don't personally think he needs to grovel more (though I understand fans who feel that way.) But given how he has made some mistakes, he can't simply act entitled to a proposal. In some ways I wonder if it was the pressure of "well, after our carriage hookup I don't want you to be a 'ruined woman' & also I need you to know that was more meaningful to me anyway, love in addition to the lust." So if he feels he has to propose to do that, say it with respect.

@thedevicebook if this was someone who'd just met recently like Simon and Daphne, I'd agree. But honestly it's different because they've known each other since childhood and then are already so close, it works for me. Colin is still that impulsive guy at heart. Both of his proposals have been on the fly (but before, he didn't even really know Marina and Pen is his bestie) their shared history makes it work for me. Plus it's almost word for word perfect from the book. And since Nicola fought for book moments to be included, it's what the actor wanted as well. It's just like a meant-to-be moment, not an entitled one. It's fast on his side, romantically, but not on hers. On her side, he took way too long to realize feelings haha so he was actually quite late to propose 😅

  • @thedevicebook

@@brynbailey7132 well I also believe flawed characters can be interesting & so even if I feel his proposal is flawed, it still gets to exist in the show. Also you can disagree with me about the proposal having issues, and I do understand the way you phrased it. Part of me still liked it (I was still feeling pretty upbeat after the carriage ride scene, that declaration, the sexy acts and particularly the nod of consent from Pen. A consent moment from season 2 from Kantony made me happy too & apparently it was something the actor advocated for.)

It feels as though he’s kind of (and I’m sorry🤷🏾‍♀️) operating out of lust. The carriage scene was slightly overhyped and came kind of early in my opinion. Or rather, it felt undeserved. Also the confession… I’m sorry it didn’t hit the way it was meant to. I received more Lord Debling and Penelope content, yet it’s Polin season. Idk. Too many side plots that felt unnecessary like Benedict and Lady Tilly, Lady Danbury’s brother and Violet Bridgerton and last, Francesca. Their storylines are good and worthy of being told but I feel like right now wasn’t the time to tell them as extensively. I really hope part 2 has us see WHO Colin is. WHY his sentiments towards Penelope have changed other than the kiss yk? Plus I needed more groveling from Colin and more lessons which would’ve led them to at least explore more of Colin’s journals and his “purpose”. However, love the cast, love Polin’s acting. But, I also would have preferred a slow motion scene with Colin's jealousy like we had with Anthony in season 2. I would be able to really feel it more, would be way more atmospheric. Plus, I don't really believe they're in love. It just feels we should have dedicated more time to their will they/won't they. It does feel like he's just operating because lust. And they definitely needed to have a more groveling apology. It just felt like they were trying to get pen's and Colin's fight out of the way.

The carriage scene is one of my biggest criticisms! I feel like the reason it was underwhelming was because it lost the impact of why the carriage scene happened. If you have read Polin's book, then you'd probably understand why I say that (I don't want to spoil). Because they took out changed that part of the scene from the book, Colin's proposal comes off like a heat of the moment thing rather than his book couterpart's reasoning for the proposal.

I think the biggest change from the book that I hated was the lack of lady danbury’s newfound friendship with Penelope. I loved seeing their similarities and fondness with each other. This should have replaced the Cressida plot line. I liked the friendship between her and Eloise, but do agree that it took up unnecessary screen time. I am glad that the Lady Whistle-down plot line was not as redundant as the book, but they should have showed more. My favorite part is Eloise apologizing to Penelope and protecting her while still being reasonably mad at what she did. And I do love seeing how much Penelope wants to pair things up with Eloise but giving her space. We needed more of that. I love how much they care for each other, but just don’t know when they can become friends permanently again. I also love the conversations with Colin and Eloise. We got him reprimanding her for being friends with Cressida as well as more intimate ones about Eloise’s friendship with Penelope. I hope we get another Benedict/Eloise talking on swings again.

I have been a Polin story fan for so long!! It is a damn shame that we got an empty character for Colin. I was so invested in his travel and writing journey! I wanted to see that "purpose" dynamic, between Colin and Pen. And here we are, with unnecessary threesome scenes! I think Luke and Nicola did a great job, but man I am disappointed in the storyline. I love the rom com vibe, but I would actually like to know 'Who the hell is Colin?" Because we are done with half a series and I do not have one substantial thing to say!

Putting us under embargo for HALF THE LOVE STORY had me flabbergasted. I'm basically going to be TIP TOEING my way into saying more and more once I can gauge what is or isn't allowed to be spoken about because I didn't want to run out here when the Part 1 embargo lifted and say too much and then get blacklisted from reviewing future seasons of the show. I've already gotten people saying rude things about me "not saying enough" about Colin and Penelope in this video but I CLEARLY EXPLAINED why the first reaction is what it is. Either way, I have another 3 videos pre-filmed, a couple more outlined, and depending on what sort of opinions I get from viewers, I'm open to circling back to Colin and Penelope during the 1-month gap if there are certain talking points that are prominent.

  • @Gray429

This season is far too short. I needed Colin to struggle with his feelings a lot more than what was shown because I found him obnoxious and irritating up until the fourth episode. I missed good Colin. I needed more resolved empowered Penelope. That first kiss…it was cringey in the book, it’s even more cringey in the show. There were so many times I wanted to tear my hair out, reach through the screen and rescue Penelope out of this whole situation with Colin, Eloise and her own family. I had so much sympathy for the unbearable-ness of her season and the amount of heartbreak and embarrassment we see her go through from the dot. I miss happy Penelope. She’s just so miserable and desperate, it’s like watching your little sister struggle and being hurt. For that reason I really liked Debling because he was CURIOUS about Penelope. He SAW her. I’m glad they toned down Colin’s temper in the show, he’s a lot more unbearably angry in the books which came across as “man-child-like”. It doesn’t suit his character to be hard like Anthony. I agree, it was genuinely stressful watching the episodes. Definitely wasn’t comforting. One thing I wish they had done in the show and books was Colin actually finding out she’s Lady Whistledown but it’s a secret to Penelope and to the audience until a huge moment. Colin’s supposed to be a writer, and just like Penelope reading his journals, it would have been nice for Colin to mirror that with Lady Whistledown’s writing compared to how Penelope is or says things. It would show they are actually best friends who know each other, and we would see part of Colin’s struggle “I’d never date Penelope” didn’t actually come from some weird macho masculinity like it appears, but because he’s struggling internally with forgiving her for what she’s done but also unable to end the friendship. The opposite of Eloise. It fits more in line with his character to be more forgiving as he was with Marina, than Eloise who isn’t. The drama could be internally in Penelope’s head of how to tell him she’s Whistledown, when in fact he has known and has kept her secret this entire time because he realises, he loves her and sees the good heart she has. Instead of what we actually got…which was a lot of angry Colin and tearful Penelope and it drives me NUTS. But I digress.

I agree with you. Their story was the one I was most looking forward to and I utterly hated this season. Part 1 was such a disappointment. Of course I’ll watch the second half and I’m hopeful they’ll fix it, but I genuinely don’t think they’ll be able to with only 4 episodes left and so much left to cover. Yes, they gave us a lot of the scenes we were looking forward to, but they removed the heart from it. For example, the journal scene. They made the importance the cut on his hand rather than the actual writing about his travels. This was supposed to be an eye opener to Pen that they are both writers and her encouraging him to continue writing which would lead to giving him purpose in publishing his journals. Instead… she read about him sleeping his way through Europe? And wasn’t incredibly hurt by it, thinking she couldn’t compare? It was alarming that she then complimented his writing considering the subject of what he wrote which, considering she’s in love with him, should have led to her to taking two steps further back from him at this point. He would have needed to make this up to her by later explaining she’s special… which it would be hard to take him seriously now considering he’s throwing compliments around so easily this season that receiving one is no longer unique or meaningful. They’ve barely interacted this season! This love story feels like a side story. The ones that are ACTUALLY supposed to be a side story should be cut down a bit, especially the boxing to riches storyline. We don’t need the heir comparison of them to the Featheringtons, we get it, and I agree they were more interesting when they were in the working class.

For some reason I don’t feel as invested as I expected and it can’t be their chemistry or their acting. Maybe it’s the plot, the writing or the way it has been shot? Idk but the whole ‘kiss me please please’ out of nowhere felt zero organic and also so desperate 😅and I sure hope they explore more of Colin’s character in the next episodes cause we have no idea who this man is really - I feel like I know more about Benedict 😅 speaking of: every scene he is in, I LOVE 😢 he’s just a delight. I think Bridgeton is at its best when it’s the family all together. And sadly Anthony is missing for most of it 😭 although also their scenes were shot different, their chemistry is insane 👏🏻

So now that I've read the book I can see that the general beats were similar BUT the show's vibes were different for that part because Penelope had just gotten exposed and HUMILIATED in front of the entire ton because they all found out she was having Colin help her find a husband. In the book, they're just talking to each other and she asks him to kiss her so there isn't the same level of heightened 'trauma' jump-starting it. She's still doing the "I could die" / "what if I died" language with him being all 'whaaaaaaaat, you're not going to die' in response but the VIBES are different because people throw that word around plenty in modern vernacular. Like the expression "I'm so happy I could die" ~ it doesn't quite literally mean DEATH. But I acknowledged my Penelope bias for watching the first kiss for the first time. I wanted HER to be having more of a good time than she was. She was still very much upset about what happened! I don't want her thinking about all of that when she FINALLY gets to kiss the person she's been in love with for most of her life! 😂

@@Cyberlucy. Not really. There was a general bad lightning. From the top of my head I can think of the moonlight ball, then the inovations ball (I think that's the name) and that one from the queen, with the ballet was also terribly dark. Then we compare to like the trowbridge ball from s1 where even the outside was so well lit that you could see the external of the house or s2 the ball at aubrey hall you could catch every little detail. But in s3 I had a hard time even spotting the actor's expression in every scene that wasn't day time. There is a particular scene that bothered me so much, it was Colin screaming at his mother in the stairs, yes it's night time, but compare to other season night time in the bridgerton house, even the same stairs, it's always good lightend and you can clearly see everything. I really hope they improve this in s4, cause s1 and s2 were doing fine, there was no need to change it. And it's honestly a season I'm enjoying very much so far, so I'm sad I had to complain about production.

No but actually THANK YOU for saying that because I’ve already had people nitpicking that I’m “complaining” and that’s not what I was setting out to do. I was trying to review not only the show but review how atypical and BAD of a format the network’s publicity guidelines are and explain exactly why. There are other genres you can more easily review when you’re only talking about one portion at a time but romance specifically is very unique in the sense that the audience knows they’re here to first and foremost watch two people fall in love and they will want AT LEAST a general bit of feedback about how the story was executed. The specific verbiage of “social sentiment” being under embargo can’t be interpreted any other way by me than “don’t reveal ANY type of opinion about part 2 before the embargo lifts”. Even when I’ve done weekly video or print reviews of series, what is typically done is that you can post a general review when the embargo lifts but maybe you’ll have specific do-not-reveals or some type of message written saying something like “Please refrain from revealing spoilers ahead of the premiere/release to ensure the quality of viewing for the audience” or something like that. So you can give very broad strokes feedback but they want you to not give too many specifics or any of the “big” moments. My very first Bridgerton video was a general season 2 review and anyone can go back and watch it to see how much and how little I will say ahead of a general audience release (because I didn’t give away too many of the big moments or anything on the do-not-reveal list in that review).

I wish they showed him more with the family maybe have some scenes with Francesca. I think Benedict is a good listener, passionate and has the potential to put people at ease. I think having someone like that in the family could have made her feel less isolated especially since Kate was not there. I think they could have just make Will have a thriving business and that’s how he would start building his wealth maybe acquire a nice property. I think something like that could have reduced the amount of time being spent away from Pen and Colin. As for Pen and Colin. So far their specific story seems a bit watered down. I loved the actors but we are three seasons in, we know how the ton works, we had Lady Danbury’s story in Queen Charlotte. It’s just repetitive and redundant. We don’t need for it to be spelled out to us, again. I would much rather have seen more of Madame Delacroix than the Mondrich’s. I liked Cressida and Eloise’s friendship, it gives Eloise a chance to see the value in her friendship with Penelope and where she hadn’t been the greatest of friends to her. I have also seen theories that Cressida’s family could have a bigger role to play in Benedict’s season, so that makes sense.

@@roxyortiz8819 it’s so true, and you’re smart to limit yourself to one form of media because the stories are usually different anyway 😂 they did include some gems from the book tho, some of the dialogue while in a different setting is straight from the book and I loved that…I did not read the books for Daphne or Anthony so I had nothing to compare and liked both of their seasons. My understanding was that the show really doesn’t take much from the books, so I was pleasantly surprised with how much part 1 has taken directly from the book ❤

Binge-watched the first part, read the book twice. I'm a bit disappointed, as you said, there's too many subplots and characters. I'm not concerned about Cressida's feelings, I'm not concerned about Penelope's siblings getting pregnant or not (just, please, stop!) I'm not concerned with Benedict's romance with the widow (unless it leads us to knowing Sophie) or the history behind Mrs. Danbury's brothers or the Mondrich. I've nothing against all of them, but it really takes minutes to the main couple. I would love to see more of them, more of the flirting classes, maybe more intensity in the discussion they have when Colin finds Penelope's reading his dairies. Moreover, what about Colin's ambitions? In the book, Colin feels like he is doing nothing while their brothers have their stuff, one being viscount and the other a painter, is completely missed and is essential to understand why he is against Penelope's being Lady whistledown. Not to talk about that scenes are so short compared to the other seasons, that I didn't have an opportunity to really enjoy what was happening. Maybe it is because I'm a reader, but I feel it has too much hype, and finally, it was a bit meh.

I wish they held out on the carriage scene. It was fantastic don’t get me wrong, but I really really enjoyed how it played out in the book. It made the entire scene more tense and more passionate. The carriage scene in the show was very passionate yes but I think the additional context of what happens in the book would have set that carriage on FIRE!! And having it in episode 4 makes their getting together feel rushed. I would have preferred it in episode 6 maybe? The placement of such a pivotal scene being this soon makes me, as a slow burn girly, kind of upset. I hope the decision was for the best and they pleasantly surprise me when the rest of the season drops. I also am hoping so badly that we get Penelope and Lady Danbury scenes, because I was sorely missing that dynamic in part I.

I think, as a lot of people have said, there's just too much going on and not enough Polin. I would have loved to see more input from the Bridgertons about his weird behaviour and more suffering. We see him pining after their lessons are found out and they have to put some distance but I needed more. Hopefully Pen will say no to his proposal because he does not know about LW and that will make it more rewarding. (blink twice if I'm right). In the end, yes, WE NEED MORE EPISODES. Debling being dramatic about Pen having feelings for someone while also having said he doesn't expect feelings to grow and planning to go away for 3 years felt kinda off tbh. I liked Debling. I liked his connection with Pen. He makes Colin come across as a petulant boy by comparison for the most part. I think they have done the characters a disservice by not aging them up and having the polin story happen so early as neither Pen nor Colin seem all that secure within themselves. I am enjoying it all still but some of the decisions made are disappointing

I don't condone cheating but just make sure you have a partner who doesn't mind a 3 year dry spell, or bring them along. I do still like Deblin a lot so I would be rooting for a match that shares his interests enough to want to travel with him.

Not that I care or want to watch dudes doing it with prostitutes but even their interacts seem unnecessary and most certainly flat. Then there’s the story, please focus on one couple. I don’t understand Francesca, nor do we know her especially because she was barely mentioned or it the first two seasons. She is so peculiar that she needs her own season to flush herself out. Whoever edited this season needs a lesson on pacing so moments were uncomfortably too long and some scenes were so abrupt it took me out of the moment. Suffice to say I’m not impressed and will not hold my breath for part 2.

personally I loved the first four episodes, I get wanting to see more of specific favorite characters but I actually don't mind that bridgerton focusses on many different storylines/people even if that might make some of them lack a bit of depth. This time around I was even interested in every single side plot, only the Lady Danbury plot I was disappointed in. It could be interesting but in these first four episodes we don't get a single clue as to why exactly she doesn't like her brother there, and the way it's written doesn't evoke curiosity and tension but simply confusion. I would have also wished for some kind of relationship between Lady Danbury and Penelope, and while I don't view it quite as harshly I do agree with one of the comments here that they could have shown us more about Colins character. Nontheless I enjoyed myself greatly, I cried every episode, I thought there were a lot of funny moments that made me laugh out loud and I squeal as well. I'm very sure this will become my favorite season for the timebeing, I really love the friends to lovers trope and romcom vibes, I actually really enjoy what they're doing with Pen, Eloise and Cressida as well, and I really like Franscesca too. It's fun and I will suffer immensely waiting another month for part two... also I did not think the carriage scene awkward at all, well- in a certain way I did but I feel thats just part of these types of steamy romance stories because there were moments with Simon and Daphne and Kathony as well were I felt a similar awkwardness, but not in a bad way at all. It's just what comes from those intense eye contacts and grand dialogue and steaminess sometimes. I thought that scene was so good and touching and cute and the last line of the fourth episode HAD ME HOOKED. Thought that was a great promising cliffhanger that made me want more but didn't leave me frustrated, rather than being pissed the show has left me hanging I'm excited for whats next and thats great.

@@RinnieButterfly Aw I'm gladful my review could be helpful! I definitely agree that going in without specific expectations will make you have a more enjoyeable experience. Of course we always want to see more of our favorites but after season 2 I settled with the fact that the subplots are simply a part of what makes Bridgerton a TV show, it will never capture the romance as detailed as the books and it makes sense to be sad about that especially for the book readers, but what we do get to see of the romances is in my opinion very well done and I enjoy the changes. I went in appreciating it for what it is and truly had fun. Also maybe I'm biased as a huge Nicola Coughlan fan but I really love anything she does and I think her and Luke's chemistry is top notch. Plus, while I get wanting more groveling I actually wasn't ever that mad at Colin, beside his awful comment last season he's at no fault for simply being oblivious to his friends feelings... Him revealing that he “was not ashamed of her” and “kept seeking her out”. Fan wave. Fan wave. Fan wave. It was perfect because we constantly see him seeking her out since season 1. We have seen him defend and they to protect her since season 1. However, the “very good friend” fave me Adrien from miraculous vibes. Her asking her to kiss him was ten times better just for the change of scenery. The dream. Man, their chemistry is off the charts. Him saving Penelope from the balloon while cheesy, made me swoon nevertheless. The study room scene was everything I dreamed of. The carriage scene (even though drastically different from the book) was still everything I dreamed of. The only Colin scenes so far that I did not enjoy were the brothel scenes because they made no sense. Honestly, we already saw that is more Bendetict’s speeds. This is what always stood out to me in the whole Bridgerton series for Polin's story; their emotions are way more complicated due to their familiarity and expectations of each other. I loved how they switched that up in the series, I think it is stronger, because Colin suffers more 😈. In the books he also needs to learn to appreciate Penelope more, but he never really suffered at the hands of lady Whistledown the way he has in the series. So I can't wait to see how they do that in the screen adaptation. And it was not highlighted enough yet I think, that he is without purpose, while she is already an accomplished woman (unbeknowst to anyone, but she is). I do appreciate the fact that Eloise and Penelope grew closer again and Eloise gets new insight into what drives Penelope and why Penelope handles gossip about herself and those she loves the way that she does.

I love that (aside from the Bridgeton family) is the one supporter of Penelope in the Featherington family. Him being so proud of Penelope’s grand entrance made my heart warm. I also love how happy he is with Phillipa. They just love being with each other. While I hate how Prudence, Portia, and Phillipa treat Penelope, I do love how she smiles everytime she is with Finch. Also, them exploring their sexuality together was cute and how it should be. They also gave the same amount of naivete to sex and other things which is refreshing to see. I hate seeing how experienced male protagonists are. I want a little bit of inexperience and naivete with men from time to time. That is why I like that they are learning together. Lastly, Prudence. Please be kind to your husband. He is so nice and he really wants to please her. But I did like how the show showed that sex is not always good the first time and it takes time. We know that Lady Bridgerton at least attempted to give the talk to Daphne but then she got too embarassed & it was woefully inadequate. I think a lot of parents are embarassed to talk to their kids about it, which makes sense, hence why in modern times it's the norm for public schools to cover it (even if there are still some schools that don't.)

Watched the 4 episodes. Polin faaaaar exceeded my (low) expectations, I love them. I loved the very few kanthony moments we had, and Francesca’s plot was entertaining as well. For the rest honestly I just felt like the writers were trying to give the other characters each a ‘fair’ amount of screen time, at the detriment of storytelling. Which is ironic because Benedict got paid dust. Again😭 I’m enjoying it just because I love bridgerton, but I think it could’ve been better overall? Idk we’ll have to wait another freaking MONTH to see how it all turns out I guess.

I actually liked it a lot so far even though it was pretty crowded. I think we are going to have to get used to it though as the next five seasons beyond this one one will be equally crowded. I do agree though that it's hard to judge everything when you haven't seen the whole season.

I wish they started releasing 1 episode per week. After all the anticipation, it actually makes you happy to wait one week for the next episode, because you can enjoy more the characters and avoid spoilers. Even tho I finally enjoyed the subplots this season, they were too much. I felt like Francesca was more of a protagonist than Colin, which is crazy? At the end of episode 4 I still didn’t feel connected to him, as we didn’t really get an insight into his mind and what actually changed for him during these episodes. He didn’t want to talk to his mother, he didn’t talk to Pen. We only got glances and a dream. They could’ve explored so much more of their friendship because seeing them deepen it during their few scenes together was such a joy to watch and I wanted more, even flashbacks maybe? The scenes where they starred at each other for too long felt uncomfortable and really out of the blue. My final thought is: the season was really good and I loved Colin and Pen, but we definitely needed more depth to understand Colin at his fullest and enjoy more time with them. The carriage scene was gold, I’m obsessed. WE NEED AT LEAST 10 EPISODES NEXT TIME AND MORE TIME WITH THE BRIDGERTONS!

Probably an unpopular opinion, but Eloise is probably my least favorite character in both the books AND on the show. I just find her constant air of superiority over EVERYONE insufferable. She's soooo much smarter, more enlightened, more modern, and of greater substance than other mere mortals. She was given every advantage purely by accident of birth, yet her good fortune has left her full of disdain rather than gratitude. She resents Penn for leaving her to live her life of purely elective "spinsterhood" alone after she chose to throw away their friendship over what really boils down to simple jealousy of Penn's accomplishments. I'm not saying she doesn't care for Penn at all. I just think she expected Penn to stay in her assigned role and as soon as she didn't Eloise's bad side really showed itself. Eloise enjoyed being a wallflower by choice as long as Penn was forced to tag along due to a lack of options. Yet despite having none of Eloise's advantages Penn still manages to establish herself independently within their society, achieve financial success and freedom (to the extent of saving her entire family from ruin), then wins Colin's love and a proposal of marriage?? It triggers all of Eloise's insecurities and drives her bugshit crazy. It's one thing not to wish misfortune upon someone, but if you aren't also genuinely pleased by their success and happiness you have no right to call yourself their friend.

Yeah I explained this more in detail in my Benedict video that I also published today but there is not enough being done to fairly distribute the precious little run time to the characters that should be focused on. Of course Colin and Penelope should have the most since it’s their season but other characters are either being given too much or too little ~ it makes no sense for the show to be attempting to do this much when they only have EIGHT episodes.

I was hoping for Anthony's or Kate's intervention in Polin or for Anthony to be a better brother to all his siblings. I need a scene with Penelope checking her mom/sisters the way she did with Colin.

Not in the same conversation. The first 2 seasons she navigated the love interest of the Bridgerton. In book 4 if you read it, uhhh this was the only thing I desperately needed to happen. Like Colin is nothing compared to lady Danbury. The only reason I like Colin is because Penelope loves Colin. I hope the second half of the season has some #Panbury

I loved your review and agree with your major point that there truly was a little too much stuffed into this season. I have a few thoughts… My biggest complaints: 1) The tone of this season is a little weird for me…really quite different from the first two seasons. I think in part because they really are trying to push a “rom-com” vibe but it felt…a little condescending actually 😕 Like almost as if the show itself was saying “ Penelope and Colin are such an unbelievable match we can’t even present it to you in a way that makes you take them seriously.” This might actually be because the episodes are so fast paced and too stuffed to really give any real time to any individual story line…even Polin’s. 2) I really dislike how Colin kept his facade on literally until about 1/2 way through episode 4! Part of the reason why Colin is such a like-able character is because he is SOOOO different from the other men of the ton. He IS kind! He IS perceptive! He IS genuine when he speaks to Penelope in seasons 1 and 2. We only get very slight glimpses of this in episodes 1-3 and it truly wasn’t enough. What I did like: 1) I LOVED all of the book references! Whole sections of dialogue straight from the book ❤❤❤ 2) The Featherington’s were absolutely hilarious and I loved the development of their stories. Even Penelope and her mom…that was raw and you really felt for Penelope in those moments, especially episode 4 3) When they arrived at the Bridgerton house at the end of the carriage scene…it’s literally the last two minutes of the whole freaking part one but FINALLY you get a true Colin and Pen moment that is genuine and it was to die for…rewound it at least 4 times 😂 Overall…I love Colin and Pen so much…have shipped them since season 1 and I am glad to have them in a season of their own. I’ll be honest enough to say that the reason I have these feelings of slight disappointment is likely because the reality never lives up to the dream. I am going to take a space to detox before I rewatch again so that I can hopefully come back to part 1 and appreciate it for what it is and what it has done for putting Colin and Pen in the forefront for a season.

I agree with a lot of what you and folks in the comments are saying - and I think the two part release only exacerbates those feelings. It’s like the story is cut off at the knees versus left on a cliffhanger. The part 2 preview makes me more anxious than excited. And they’re giving people too much time to scrutinize the pacing and development of a busy and overstuffed season with a month in between… they’re lucky people are so invested and the actors are so wonderful. My hope is that part 2 will show some of the cracks in Pen and Colin’s relationship that are still at play by the end of part 1 - yes they love each other, but their transition from friends to lovers is VERY fast and there’s so much that hasn’t been addressed. Not just Lady Whistledown and the drama there, but also how long Colin overlooked her for, how that made Pen feel, and what changed (if I were Pen I’d have some serious questions about the latter). They need to have a proper convo about those things otherwise it’s gonna feel weird. They also need to do more to show that it isn’t just sudden lust that pushed their relationship forward. The issue that I had with Colin doing his threesome thing was it made it unclear whether or not he wants or needs an emotional connection or meaning to enjoy being intimate - which is important given his characterization in this show and his relationship with Pen. Was he purely playing the rake archetype that first time with the two women or did he really enjoy it? He was clearly torn the second but the first is unclear. If not then what does that mean in regards to his feelings for Pen? Lust is a fine catalyst, and sexuality is fluid ofc, but since we didn’t get to see them bounce off of each other and build tension as friends as much as a lot of us would’ve liked (throughout the whole show frankly but esp s3) it makes you wonder why their kiss plagues him so much. Also correct me if I’m wrong but did they ever explain why Colin dissed her last season? Cause in my memory it came out of nowhere and wasn’t addressed well in this season either. The lessons were supposed to be the tool to explore that and they didn’t end up playing as much of a role as I’d hoped. Bless the actors cause they really did double time making up for these things with some stellar performances. On the bright side, while I wish we’d had more Polin and Colin development overall, I’m not as disappointed in his character development as I think some people are. I loved the fact that throughout part 1, even though he’s flirting his butt off and engaging in some “locker room talk” (for lack of a better word) with the other young men, he never actually goes into graphic detail about his escapades or the women he was with - and gets upset when the other men do. Not just because he’s more sensitive, but because he clearly doesn’t like treating women or relationships that way. Even ones that didn’t end in marriage or a “serious” relationship. When Pen reads his writing it’s clear that all those entanglements from his travels meant something to him in one way or another. They help him learn about himself or a person or the world. Yes he’s trying to fit in with the other guys but he has lines he won’t cross because that’s not who he is. All of the true raunchiness we see of Colin, we see from him in a private setting with his partners - he only alludes to it in public and is fully honest about it in his writings. And I liked that a lot! I just wish we’d gotten more time to explore WHY he was trying so hard to fit in beyond “you’ve always been a sensitive people pleaser” commentary from Violet. So many thoughts, so many ideas. Guess we’ll just have to make like the ladies of the ton and talk until part 2!

Hello I appreciate you being honest about your personal bias and struggles that make it difficult for you to review it. It is much better than (oftentimes stupid and entitled) people confusing their opinions with facts. I wanted and hoped to love this season but I don't know how to feel about it. I prefer to wait for the second part to hold definite judgment but there are things I really liked and things I was disappointed by and it felt too rushed IMO. That also summarize my opinion on Polin. A weekly release (or a 2/3 first episodes then weekly) is the best and don't understand why they don't do it. S3 felt even more rushed than S1 and S2 so they really NEED to consider giving it (and probably other ensemble shows) a few more episodes to improve pacing and "characters development". This first part of season 3 felt rushed and there was so much going on an episode felt like too. The show isn't about Kanthony anymore. So it's normal to see little of them. But it was nice to see them in marital bliss. To see Kate fitting so we'll within the family and Violet and Kate having a sweet relationship. Also lo ve the hint that Edwina married her Prince after all (Friedwina spin-off when?). It was also nice to see Anthony be more relaxed, and a better big brother. Queen Charlotte is unlikeable but this is how I prefer it (maybe it's because I'm French and we have a history of... Shortening aristocrats and monarchs. We're quite like bees in that ragard😂). The actress playing her is fantastic in portraying her boredom, arrogance, ego and her disdain for others. I still like her friendship and schemming with Lady Danbury. They missed an opportunity to do something different (but in-character) with Benedict: having him help the Mondrichs navigate the ton and it's complicated (and ridiculous) rules would be great! AND it could still be a cool way to show his disdain of the ton, his compassionate and funny but observant side... But maybe also his contradictions maybe? AND it could help prepare him as next season's lead. AND fusing some characters plotlines would help with pacing. I knew I would love Francesca and I was not disappointed (with her) 🙂 Lord Deblin owns our respect and our esteem. Dear Lord ❤️ I finally find Éloïse likeable! But the shift is so drastic it's a bit weird. I suppose a lot of maturing can happen in a year but still. She delivered one of my favorite lines though. I knew Éloïse would somehow f* up bad because that's how she'll learn to understand that people make mistakes. And learn to forgive. I loved how Violet was confused with Francesca, worried she would rush into a "bad" marriage for convenience, and did not want to repeat the mistakes she made with Daphne and Éloïse. But she knew exactly what she was doing with Colin and was less and less subtle each time she talked to him because that boy would not understand 😂 I wonder since when she's known/suspected because we don't see an aha moment from her. The Featherington subplot was fine and interesting : We see again how emotionally abusive they are with Pen. No wonder she's so desperate to get away. Actually I really liked how, even when she's trying to be kind Feathermom is still very hurtfull to her daughter. She has no idea how to perform emotional support but we can still see she cares about her daughters (something that we knew since S1). We also see why sex education is essential. And this aspect of their subplot could look like a good expansion of S1 theme about it. But with more time they could have make it better. Agree with you about Hyacinth and Gregory. :D I concur with another commenter that it would be interesting if you could cover the narrative of toxic masculinity in Bridgerton. It is EVIDENT Colin's story but there are bits and pieces whole series. I might be wrong, but it sounds like a topic you would like covering too. Also, I know this is another can of worms, but am I the only one who is tired of romantic love always being called "more" than friendship? They serve us this "quality angst" like you said with Peneloise and they show time and time the importance of friendship. And yet they still have the audacity to call romantic love more than friendship?! 😡 I hope your doing well

Yeeeesss! I hate the axe hanging over our heads about the LW thing. They keep pushing this as a romcom, but... I'm not this stressed out in a romcom! Like, in While You Were Sleeping, even though we knew Lucy had this big secret she was afraid to tell everyone, while it gave the story some tension, I didn't feel dread while watching it. And that's what I feel when watching this season. I feel dread and I'm stressed and I feel like they....ruined the vibes of my favorite Bridgerton book. I like the softer gentler vibes of RMB, and because they've made LW such a big thing in the show, it's ruined the softer and lighter tone I think they were going for in part 1. Because all I can think about is the shit that's going to explode when LW is exposed. Along with all they're cramming into this, I...don't love this season so far.

I haven't finished EP 4. But so far my thoughts: 1_ Colin's character is absolutely flat. No layers to him. He came back tanned and has the ladies all over...not much to add. Violet says he is very sensitive and is more concerned over every other person's feelings...I could not see much of that. I would have preferred much more teasing before the first kiss. 2_ Pen's glow up happened too early and for what...and then her teaching classes. But not much development. 3_ In general, regarding Seasons 1 & 2, there are entire scenes I love. Especially season 2: the gun scene (ep 4), their first dance (ep.4), the post-dinner with the Sharmas (ep.6), the last ball (ep.8) and I can clearly remember the dresses too and the songs. In this season, there is not much I can remember from the first 3 episodes. They are fine but not great. 4_ I do not know what it is, it just feels flat in general in terms of dialogue, scenes, music, character development. I still love it, and I find Pen lovely. But is just does not feel up to the hype generated.

Commenters keep saying this about him proposing without knowing the whistledown secret, but the issue is he can't know what he doesn't know. He doesn't realize there's a secret that would put a wrench in things (which is sort of a trend with him given he proposed to Marina without knowing something important.) But I am guessing the comments might be more about disliking this from a writing standpoint. It really does seem to be a decision the show is making as the book goes a different way. (I haven't read the books but I have seen commenters explain he finds out prior to proposing in the books.) As tense as it makes me, I do understand why the writers are choosing this. The tension IS the point.

I honestly believe that a lot of this season relied on season 1 and 2 of polin and see their development, which is why we didn’t get a more developed scenes, like in the first season. As we should know their relationship before hand, I feel maybe if they did flashbacks to it since it been 2 years people are not going to go back to watch them to get their development, and expected what has already been done in season 1&2, and season 3 was just the romance but it won’t seem that way, as people don’t have prior context as many did not watch for Polin. Their development or did not understand them for me I don’t have a problem with the pacing or sub plots. I thought they were interesting but this season relied heavily on subtleties, as it has for them for the last 2 seasons, so that might be something to consider too.

I appreciate the cutting down from network TV's 22, but not all series are meant to be mini-series! I have this complaint with both Bridgerton and Rings of Power (yeah, I know, Amazon, but if they're making a tortured scruffy villain making eyes at his messy warrior queen you bet I'm watching it), they have high budgets and so many characters, is higher episode count not financially beneficial? I agree. I liked what they did have with the Polin plot, but there wasn't as much content as I would have liked because there were way too many subplots. The subplot I personally could have done without is the one regarding the bartender whose son becomes noble. He was such a random character to focus on at all this season, and I got annoyed every time a Polin storyline was cut with their scenes. There was already enough going on with the other Bridgertons: Franchesca, Eloise, Benedict, and Violet.

There's a whole Bridgerton playlist on my channel, you'll be able to watch everything there! (I had 5 pre-recorded ahead of the Part 1 drop, two of which I've already published, but then two or more other videos already outlined because I ran out of time to have everything fully prepped because I don't have the privilege of being able to do KZread full time and also the foster cats were very time consuming 😭).

It's a bit of a letdown, imo. I found myself bored with the storyline. By episode 2, I was grabbing my phone searching for reviews in an effort to see if I was alone in my disappointment. Lol, I needed some sort of validation. Something was missing. I was annoyed with what seemed like forced tensions in the sense I was very aware of the acting/ overacting to portray said tension. It was just off for me. The book was so much better and exciting. So far - so dull. Hope part 2 doesn't feel as awkward and forced. And I don't know how in the heck the producers are going to make Benedict's season intriguing with the actor playing him and how he's been presented thus far. His character is not the least bit interesting.

My day today: Eating breakfast. Updating Netflix eftry half hour to see if the episodes dropped. 09.02: watching ep 1-4, with a small interruption in the middle of the carriage scene when a friend called and needed some emotional support after making a big life-change. Then fixing lunch and watching this video while eating. Luckily I'm homebound because of a broken leg (living in a country with reasonable healthcare and income compensation) so that's good timing I guess 😅

I'm on parental leave. Dropped off the older ones at daycare and planted myself in front of the TV with the baby. Hooray for social security! 😁😎

I am waiting for part 2... Part 1 left alot to be desired. Can I ask how you got to review it early? I do reviews as well and I am looking for ways to get in on shows I love! The politics seem crazy though.

I feel like Polin shouldn’t be engaged by episode 4. Definitely slow the burn down a little bit. Also having three peats with X workers was something I would never have guessed. I didn’t see introducing John Sterling coming at all 😉. Also, with the seasons coming every two years, I can’t see a season for all 8 of the Bridgerton children. Give the older five children each a season and somehow wrap up the younger three children.

Just completed Part-1 Things I loved- 1.Loved and loved Colin and Penelope. 2. Colin yearnalisn in Ep-3 Chef kiss. 3. Giggled way too much in carriage scene ( how tender he was with her and the way he dressed her😭) 4. Kanthony Did not like - 1. For a season which is Polin it was way less polin (same problem I had with S2) 2. I feel like writers don't know what to do with QC after S1. Fast ⏩ her scene 😭 2. Could not care less about Cressida storyline 3. Way less Benedict screen time ( give my man something concrete storyline plss)

Agreed with a lot of this! Benedict was the first thing I knew I wanted to nitpick in depth which is why this review was the first “introduction” to season 3 coverage and then I scheduled it so that 4 hours after part 1 would be released (4 episodes = 4 hours) my Benedict video would be published about how he’s being sidelined and given bad filler material. 😗

Yeah Benedict, the standout "this could have been shaved off" side plot of the season. Because Fran needs the setup now FOR SURE, and I personally don't mind giving Cressida a full character rather than an archetype... Especially since Cressida is important in the book for this season. But there should have been more Polin, for the love of Christ more Polin.
