Young Justice is an American superhero animated television series developed by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman for Cartoon Network and Distributed By Warner Bros. Domestic Television. Despite its title, it is not a direct adaptation of Peter David, Todd Dezago and Todd Nauck's Young Justice comic series, but rather an original story set in the DC Universe with a focus on teenage and young adult superheroes.
The series follows the lives of teenage superheroes and sidekicks, namely Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Red Arrow, Miss Martian, and Artemis, who are members of a fictional covert operation group. Within the show, "the Team" is a group of young heroes attached to the famous adult team, the Justice League, but operating outside of the bureaucracy that constrains the more established superhero team. The main setting is a fictional universe apart from the previous DCAU and other continuities, designated at one point as Earth-16, during a time period in which superheroes are a relatively recent phenomenon, and supervillains have all began working in tandem in a grand conspiracy on behalf of a cabal of key villains known as the Light.

Wally was just probably one of the best characters in this show. And im happy he finally gets his respect in the DC pantheon. Hes the best flash, the fastest in the family, the most endearing, and an important lightning rod of heart within the universe. Dick Grayson is the hope and Wally is that Heart. And this show really was able to expose that in ways I rarely see, outside of the DCAU version of him.

In a lot of ways I respect this show for having Wally sacrifice himself in a Barry crisis like fashion. I mean part of me was and is really sad at his death, but another part of me is proud that he got to play that role. It was the same when he sacrificed himself and nearly died in the DCAU. That one moment showed Wally as the true hero he is. The fact that in YJ Wally didn’t even HESITATE to go help despite being retired and in continuity significantly slower than Bart and Barry in YJ meant a lot. So much more than when the strongest or the fastest steps in. I also just honestly appreciate the fact that people cared that Wally did sacrifice himself and the writers knew they would. In comics big sacrifices often occur because writers got bored writing characters or because they’re literally fridging a character for another’s story or because the readers have gotten fed up with a character or so many negative reasons. Events like Barry’s death, Jason’s death, New 52 Superman’s death, and so on are tinged in shame because of it. But Wally’s death was felt by all the fans and the characters in universe and clearly the writers themselves still liked Wally’s character because he continued to play a role and make appearances (despite being dead) in seasons 3 and 4. His personality and character always serving as a moral compass for those that remain. Wally’s death in Young Justice meant something and it meant something powerful and it wasn’t something anyone wanted to happen (I mean like in the agenda sense; though I don’t think the writers wanted it either but felt it was needed) but it did happen and that made it even more powerful. In Young Justice and the DCAU he really shined as the HEART of what Heroes should be. I think its perfect that his loss in the DCAU created the Justice Lords and that in YJ he is always remembered and brought up when the OG team members start to stray.

I also love in the end of this episode when Robin congratulates Wally for saving a country. He's not jealous or just trying to make Wally feel better, but rather he's genuinely stoked for his friend. Robin did get to fight side by side with the league, but Wally got to undertake a solo mission and his success had a huge payoff, and Robin is so happy for his friend. I think the most important lesson I learned with Wally and the series as a whole is... We can't lose hope. The show was cancelled before, and it came back. Season 3 was good, but had some problems. Season 4 knocked it out of the park. And in it, we saw Wally in the Phantom Zone. And he wasn't the same as the other people Superboy saw. Wally was written out of the comics for years when the New 52 hit. Erased and replaced. Yet, we should never have lost hope. He came back and I cried. I read Rebirth a few times on release (bought it digitally because it releases on my birthday) and then bought it twice in physical media when it released in my country. I still believe. Season 5 may happen someday. Wally may return some day. But even if it doesn't happen, I'm grateful and happy with the time we got with these characters.

But he is still a very influential character on everyone else because of his growth and impact when he was around. It's a meta-theory. The larger DC continuity makes it very likely, and there are very deliberate nods to it in the season. They start pointing out that not just Barry but also Bart are faster than Wally. This is significant because in the comics, Wally holds the title of by far the fastest speedster in DC when he takes the mantle of The Flash. So when a slow Wally disappeared, it was a pretty clear signal that he would be back when he was needed most.

Never considered that Wally's character was lucky to have a solid arc with a beginning, middle, and end. Something that likely no other character in this show will have, on the basis of the creators' insistence on never delivering a wholly conclusive ending (which I do admire). I really wonder how it felt for the writers to realize they were completely arcing out a character. I love how they've been able to still bring Wally into the show in other ways, even to the last episode of season 4 (Queen Perdita has a lasting scar from her heart transplant, Wally's hologram in the Watchtower, people hallucinating him several times bc to them he is a beacon of goodness and never giving up, Artemis and Dick have a fighting move named after him, etc). Wow. Great show. Great video!

I like that the show is willing to have characters change and become different people, but the time-jumps take away from seeing how they get there. What makes us appreciate character development is witnessing it happening, which means we need to spend time with the characters we are watching. By doing time-jumps and focusing on new characters we didn't get much of an introduction to, it forces us to start over, but it's still expected of us to have investment in the old characters who are now very much different from when we last saw them. It just doesn't work that way. Take, for example, Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Imagine if after Season 1 we jump to the middle of Season 3, and we learn about all the stuff he did following the first season and we see him making a face-turn. Sure, he's changed, but it would have taken away from his development if we never saw it. Plus, it takes away from the huge losses our heroes have endured after the 1st season. But on the subject of this episode, it's definitely among one of my favorites in the show. I like how they do a bit of a redo of the "DC Showcase: Green Arrow" special, while having it be someone else. It adds so much to the character of Wally and sets up for his maturity.

The cycle of despair that Artemis goes through in that episode as she gets put on the spot to save the Team from the Reds was phenomenal character work, (for a lot of the same reasons Coldhearted worked for Wally, actually.) And it didn't hurt at all that Stephanie Lemelin just straight up CRUSHED her voice work for Artemis in the darkest moments of the episode. I do like this episode, but I did think it was messed up that Batman didn't tell KF who the heart was for - it mattered because she was a high profile target for at least one supervillian! Batman always says "forewarned is forearmed" in the comics, what was his problem here??

I really liked this episode! It's the episode that made me like Wally as he definitely wasn't a favorite of mine before this. Him saying that the best gift was seeing a little girl smile was just so sweet and kind, it really showed his growth as a character. Also I really do hope Young Justice gets a season 5 and beyond. I love the show and would love to see it continue. I binge it all the time.

Great video! You know I always love your Young Justice content. Anytime I see videos about the series pop up on youtube it's almost always either someone complaining that the show is "too woke" or else a disgruntled fan who thinks only the first (or first two) seasons are good. And I think this video is a good example of why - to me - all of the seasons are great. There is so much that is seeded in the very beginning that you don't feel true payoff for until later, and it's a pattern the show continues with every season. There's so much thought put into it, and while it's okay if the show just isn't for you, I do tend to get frustrated with the way some people label the show as 'bad' just because it doesn't do what they specifically want it to. So seeing your positive videos about the show always makes me happy, especially because they're always so well made!

6:27 On a KZread video for the 4th season episode, "Kaerb Ym Traeh," I wrote a comment to Zatanna's line about Black Canary's number, in which she tells the school bus driver to make sure all his student-passengers keep it in their contacts and don't hesitate to use it. My comment actually read, "'Ton sa gnol sa S'Ovi dnuora, Annataz.' I would hesitate, as the Canary will be fighting Amazo when you arrive," as a reference to the FIRST season episode, "Schooled," where the bus is from.

This episode is one of the reasons that Wally's one of my favorites. I was devastated when he died, and even more so when I realized (alongside Artemis and the rest of the team) - that he wasn't coming back. I wouldn't want such a great show to stoop to a level where they bring back a fan-favorite character using some sort of "plot armor", in order to please the fans. But I would also like to see Artemis and Wally's relationship. I just wanted them to be happy together ಥ_ಥ

The episode was instantly one of my absolute favorites, if not my absolute favorite (the only one that really rivals it is Failsafe). But I have a tendency to fall for episodes that don't really move the overarching plot along, or episodes that focus on a specific character, and really delves into what makes them them. And stories about what makes a character keep going, and why they do what they do, are just obviously awesome and the best. And Wally is my favorite Young Justice character.

I think what's most interesting about this episode is that it set the stage for everyone else's arc. The show's premise was about teenagers trying to learn how to be adults. They didn't want to be sidekicks anymore, but they were still faking adulthood, trying to be who they thought they were supposed to be instead of just being themselves. The more Wally wanted to be seen as a full-fledged hero and a smooth lady's man, the more he came off as a vainglorious idiot. Having his insecurities played upon by villains was a perfect way for him to see himself for what he really was, a child desperately pretending to be a grown-up. It forced him to let go of that pretense, which was the first step to real maturity. And by the end of the season, all the characters went through a similar arc. They all had to let go of their deepest childhood insecurities in order to become full-fledged heroes. That's why the show was a masterpiece, and why this episode in particular was the show's perfect mid-point.

I was mad for Wally when it first came out. That he seemed to be “demoted” to a c team all by himself. It seemed to be when the team was growing up and he was held back. It took me rewatching the show later to realize he was growing the most out of everyone, after this episode he was the best hero on the show , justice league included.
