is that a twist or just 'writing her out of character', e.g. I wasnt familiar with who terra was so it wasnt a twist for me, a twist would be something like she was controlling deathstroke or something.

Outsiders has a lot of problems, but I admire it for its ideas, themes, and some individual character moments. Legitimately, Vandal Savage became a fascinating villain in this season.

Yeah, I really liked how "Evolution" revealed the larger scope of the Savage/Darkseid dynamic. This isn't going to be a simple story where Apokolips invades Earth and it's all neatly resolved afterwards.

I liked most of, if not all of the characters that were introduced in the newer seasons. I just wish they were given time to grow. Every time I was finally feeling attached to one group of characters, another six got introduced and the perspective shifted.

I found a Poll during Season 3(During it's Very Bad 2nd Half IMO). Had more Viewers than Squid Game. Even though Squid Game was More-talked-about.

@@indie-mox7473 I dunno how to tell you this but that's precisely why it would be in their interests to continue the show. TV doesn't get renewed or cancelled based on quality. It's all about the viewing figures. That's why the vast majority of TV is total shite, but still manages to last 20 seasons. If YJ was doing _that well_ then any sane director wouldn't give two shits about whether it was good or not, they'd just keep throwing money at the crew so they can keep raking in the cash. That's the way entertainment as an industry works. Transformers 2 was one of the worst movies ever put to celluloid, but it made a gazillion bucks so it got three sequels and a reboot. Hell, Bay himself hated making them and said every movie after the second was his last, but every Transformers sequel he shat out would single-handedly fund the movies he actually cared about, so he kept coming back. Avatar was a total nothing-burger of a movie, but it's the highest-grossing movie of all time (after three cinema releases), so it got an entire theme park expansion to itself and all its follow-ups have been greenlit before anyone even sees the second one. The only thing that matters in the board room is _money,_ and WB/Discovery just threw away a money-printer show, along with multiple other money-printer shows and movies, because they want to focus on reality TV and comedy.

Another deep favorite of mine. Young Justice sometimes gets lost in the vast conspiracy of it's plot but to me it's a perfect Example of what DC can aspire to be and what makes them so very distinct from Marvel.

Young Justice itself is like "every victory brings two defeats", the entire thing is bittersweet.

Each season is amazing and unique; each season has its flaws but the good outweighs the bad. I hope we’ll get more of this underrated masterpiece as much as possible.

Unfortuantly, it's one of the projects that got the axe in the discovery merger. Seeing as it escaped cancellation once already I don't think it'll be lucky enough for a second brush with death. Such a shame too, considering all they set up in Phantoms.

I have to agree about the characters. Unpopular characters can still tell good stories but I think you still need some level of starpower. Also as much as I love GLTAS, I can imagine how jarring it was having him appear and then disappear out of nowhere while simultaneously spoiling the ending of GLTAS to any potential new fans.

Great essay as usual. Season 3 has its issues, but I still really enjoyed seeing the the characters grow and change, especially watching the OG cast become mentors themselves. I think Phantoms is even more interesting and I’m excited to see what you’ll have to say about it. For me, the most interesting thing about Young Justice is how it shows us a snapshot of the DCAU’s expansive ensemble cast, highlighting characters that typically don’t get as much focus. The different factions vying for power (the Light, The Reach, Apocalypse, Batman Inc, etc.) makes for an excellent backdrop to the interesting character stories that make up the overarching narrative about coming of age and accepting responsibility through overcoming trauma. It gets a little ham handed with it’s messaging at time, but the way it weaves together it’s stories and characters is still very impressive 4 seasons in. Lastly, I just need to say that I’m tired of how salty people get about the later seasons. I never understood the attachment to S1 and it’s more contained narrative, especially when that season was so overly formulaic to the point where it felt like an after-school special (and not in a good way). For me (and the friends I’ve recommended YJ to), Season 2 is when the show really hits its stride and starts to make interesting narrative decisions, while taking both the plot and characters into unexpected but totally reasonable directions, while also expanding the world and making you question what changed in the past 5 years. Seasons 3 & 4 don’t do that nearly as gracefully or effectively as S2 did IMO, but the way they show the growth of the OG cast and delve into Vandal Savage is absolutely incredible. Here’s hoping they’re able to find a new network for a season 5. I would love to see this story get a proper wrap up one of these days.

Both Season 3 & 4 have issues but it never bored me personally I think that show is slowly getting it's grove back because at least the stories and characters feel interesting personally I don't think any show is unwatchable it's just different strokes for different people. Plus no matter how bad I think a series is I have to see how it ends same goes for Star wars same goes for RWBY.

I completely agree! I love all of YJ's seasons for different reasons, but I will usually cite 2 as being my favorite. Yes, 1 is a masterpiece of a self-contained season focused on character growth, but 2 expands everything in a way that I find truly fascinating. The time skip and secrets add so much to both, the character and narrative tension. To me, the difference between 1 and 2 is similar to the difference between the animate Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. JL is amazing and really excels at character-focused arcs, but JLU's expanded scope allowed for so many more opportunities than JL could present. I fell similarly about seasons 3 and 4 of YJ as well. I see people hating on 3 all over the internet, and I won't deny, it had some problems both big and small. However, 3 also allowed for focusing on themes through the big plot and many characters. Yes, the story did get messy in parts, but all the moving parts had purpose, and where those parts succeeded, the season was really good. Plus, through the addition of new characters, we were able to see our OG cast grow beyond themselves to become mentors for the next generation, especially Nighwing, Superboy, and Tigress. Granted, the hole thing could have been executed much more smoothly, but I think that people should really take a look at this season for what it is, and not dismiss it for trash just because it makes it the OG cast share the spotlight. As for season 4, you can tell that the team tried to give the naysayers what they wanted woth character-focused arcs that were "like season 1." Luckily, a lot of these arcs were awesome, and allowed some much appreciated focused character development and worldbuilding. However, you could also see that the team was struggling to fit the plot and character development together smoothly, mostly because they just weren't meant to be that way. And, if you fell on love woth a character who wasn't one of the OGs (or Beast Boy), then it kind of sucked for you. The expanded scope of seasons 2 and 3 allowed for more characters for people to love, but required that they share screen time. In contrast, 4 focused on a few characters, while all but sacrificing the rest. I love 4, it's great, but it feels like we missed out on a lot of potential by requiring that the show be "character focused," in stead of being a show where plot and character drive each other. So, the reason I love 2 so much, is that it felt like it stuck a balance between plot, character, and scope. While it was not perfect, it did manage to make these various parts play off each other in a way that satisfied most desires of people who wanted to watch a superhero show. And, while 1 was amazing, I think that 3 and 4 really do have a lot to offer. However, the only way we can appreciate them is if we accept that they weren't what we expected, but that that doesn't necessarily make them bad. Wow that was long. Kudos if you read this far. :)

​@@bighead4564 Over the Summer, Warner Media and Discovery Channel completed a merger to become Warner Bros. Discovery. Controversy ensued when the new CEO, trying to make investors happy, announced that he's canceling or shelving several projects (most famous example was the Batgirl movie for HBO Max, which cost $90 million dollars and was near completion) and canceling or deleting hundreds of movies and shows and HBO Max original content from HBO Max's servers in order to come up with 3 billion dollars in cost savings (declaring it as a "loss" on taxes and to avoid paying the content creators residuals anymore). It didn't matter if the content was popular or had a strong following, it got the axe. It also didn't help that about half or even 3/4 of the content deleted happened to be animated content, fuelling the optics of the CEO's callous disregard for animation as a whole and the casual disrespect for the medium in the public consciousness. There were also stories of layoffs from HBO Max. So the main story: HBO Max was a beloved streaming service, however, because of the merger, incompetence, and callous greed from the top, it's been stripped for parts and people are paying more for less. People are also worried this won't stop at HBO Max as they fear other Warner Media channels like Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, etc. would be gutted or canceled.

I think this show gets better and better on every rewatch and on a binge. The in real life years long gaps between the seasons played a part in the perception of the show as expectations were really high as the first two seasons got romanticized (both seasons are good, im just saying the gap made them more loved and as such harder to follow up). I loved season 3 when it came back, and I think it’s still really well done. Season 4 included

Honestly my only problem with the show at this point is how stupidly big the cast is. It needs to juggle so many characters that everything feels a little, or a lot, half-baked. Like, Beast Boy just has a whole existencial crisis off screen. And Robin has like three lines in season 3, yet I'm supposed to care when he and Wonder Girl break up? A relationship that came out of nowhere to begin with? Not to mention other characters like Arrowette, Orphan and Spoiler (who're some of my favorite DC characters) who get NOTHING. Even main characters like Nightwing suffer from this; we're told Dick has all these unhealthy coping mechanisms that he's been using since Wally's death and that other characters are worried for him or getting sick of him, yet we never see any of them, so we can't really feel the impact. I really feel like the show just assumes now that we already know who these characters are and what they're about so they don't need to put in the effort. Terra's whole thing with Deathstroke isn't properly explained, but you already know about it right? It's Terra, of course she's working for Deathstroke! We don't need to properly set up the fucking climax of the season right?!

I love this series and each season though I do wish we got to see more of each character before the next season started. I really wanted to see more of the struggles Grayson and Kaldur we're going through when they were younger before we got to season 2 and how they grew.

season three has toooo many characters. i fell in love with the main cast and wanting to see them grow as people. having all new characters is putting the main cast aside to make room for others.

My favorite twist about Tara is that we as an audience expect her to double cross the team and be a villain, but when she decides not to and becomes part of the team its a genuine surprise.

“It won’t be over, not as long as I draw breath!” Baron Bedlam cried out **Brione’s stare tells you he’s becoming increasingly upset and angrier but tired of the evil, lies and being shut out of the loop.** “Uncle, I believe you.” Before Brione gives him what he deserves. One of the greatest moments in the season, made me a fan of Geoforce while before he was always just annoying but then I tried looking at his story from a different perspective.

Imo he should have always been a black adam/doctor doom kind of character. I just wish they had built it up more instead of saving it for the literal season finale

The thing about the "no more secrets" speech is that from now on they really have to be ahead of the game against their enemies; really make sure what happened before doesn't happen again. What YJO, and sometimes the entirety of YJ, doesn't realize is that the "secrets" still saved the day but the ones that wanted to do this with integrity, honesty, and inspiration were still naïve to the attacks happening around them. Best examples: Terra would have killed Beast Boy if not for Batman's team finding out Slade was lying about her not being in the Shadows anymore; Black Lightning was tricked by Jace, just like everyone else, and has no one to blame for that but himself; Infinity Inc only being found out to be used by Lex as means to make the inspiration for the Outsiders look bad later down the line and finding about them after the fact; not knowing or figuring out that Brion is being manipulated psychicly by a member of the Light . What needs to happen is that they need to prove that honesty and fairplay will win in the end and that's not really what happened entirely. Side Note: What's worse is that one of our honesty and integrity heroes, Beast Boy, was out for almost all of YJP during the time where proving that honesty and integrity works when he was needed most; yes he had mental health issues but he was not honest about it until he was given an ultimatum during his intervention and he was still a jerk to a lot of people.

Your so right there because Beast Boy tried to give Markovia hair apparent orders in his own country never give King Brion orders in his country because he outranks him there while Garfield may outrank him in America he's doesn't outrank the hair prince Brion in Markovia he should stay out of other country affairs and let the Markovians royal family and politician council do that and they did by executing the traitor to it but the vigilantes got in the way after and led themselves to being banished when they should have think before acting but they didn't did they right ShadowWriter45 because King Brion and Ambassdor Zvvid outrank everyone here there the inhabits here the Outsiders and team are just forgetting that there Foreigner visitors around Markovia they can't just do what ever they please they need to do as there told because there vigilantes are citizens not military or political people of the world so there third class people they need to stay out of other countries business and stick to doing things in America only not other places that don't nonservice them right sir because if this was set in World War 2 should we spear Hitler despite him killing almost a billion of innocent and he might plan world war 3 would we really want him to live and do that because that's something, I would never ever want to happen, I would execute him along with my brothers in arm Allies to stop that from happen not spear him and let millions to billions of innocent civilians suffer and butchered would you want that ShadowWriter45 sir please tell would you yeah or no!

Technically speaking, Brion's fall and the whole ending coup *was* the result of the shady secret keeping. There was no reason the team members couldn't have taken him to the side months before to try to explain that hey, maybe the evil villains brainwashed your sister a little and we have to help her through that. Or even just explaining it to Gregor so Gregor didn't accidentally let important information fall into Deathstroke's hands via his sister- which is what kick started the coup.

@@Windona Well if weak King Gregor had just executed his uncle months ago as he should have done the coup would never happen at all but he used his heart more than his head and almost his loyal subjects got butchered because of his stupidity indeed so King Gregor and the so called fake heroes are all the blame because they used and treated King Brion as a slave and wanted to get rid of him since they hated him completely since day 1 well there wish has been granted and he'll never want to come back again since no one loved or cared for him except his parents but tragically there gone forever but King Brion did amazingly way taking out there murder for good so there light good spirts can rest in peace safely and they would be very proud of him for doing a magical job saving there former kingdom all the way indeed!

If this series continues the only change i would like is the complete removal of mind control/manipulation BS, i'm sick of "betrayals" by brainwashed characters and fight scenes being interrupted by pk paralysis, also my boy conner deserves a good fight where he beats an opponent with higher super strenght using his own with martial arts, the poor guy was punched through walls enough times.

Your essays are fucking phenomenal. But god damn man.. the amount and selection of music is Kiiiiilling me. I Really want to watch more, but don't think I have it in me.

If they ever get to make a season 5 we need Wally’s return and Blue Beetle helping out more but I’d say 5 or 6 has to be the last season (if it wasn’t canceled) and the last season should focus on the original characters working together like season 1. Use season 5 to close off the side characters and other characters stories and make season 6 the character focused finale for the wonderful original characters. (You can still have the old ones but the stories should only follow the originals) I think it would’ve been such a great way to end the show.

Just discovered your videos and I really like your style. You clearly have a deep appreciation for these characters and stories and its nice to hear someone give an all around positive take on Outsiders. I know Outsiders and Phantoms got a mixed reception but I absolutely loved them. I always thought Outsiders was what Invasion should have been. I liked the way they eased in to introducing the new characters instead of dumping most of them on us in the first episode. I like the conspiracy between all the different hero factions, and I thought season 3's ending was one of the most over all optimistic one. Super hero stories are silly but I keep coming back to them because it is nice to see good triumph over evil. And when this show upped the villainy to truly horrible things it made the heroes winning feel more cathartic. Looking forward to the next video!

Same! The thing that made me love them was the credits scene where she's talking to somebody over tea (iirc it's her mum, but I could be wrong), and over the course of the scene they're bouncing their leg under the table, but as they say what they need to say, they stop. It's such a neat little scene and it does so much with just a few frames of animation and some voice lines.

I love Young Justice so much. Best modern DC cartoon for me. Season 1 is still my personal favorite. Seasons 2-4 are still really great tho. I want Season 5 to happen.

2:58 a BIT? The animation AAAAAND art style took a hit. Who knew toy deals paid for so much of the visual quality? It’s honestly distracting for me. I was worried about the visuals before the season released when I saw Nightwing, Superboy, and Wonder Girl’s faces in the trailer. They looked more squared and diamond shaped respectively. While I care about quality of writing and acting in my shows more than the visuals ( but those took certain hits too arguably), it was a bummer since Season 1 and 2 looking as good as they did was some of my favorite aspects of the show. The way it looked like a DC animated movie (before Flashpoint up to Apocalypse War when the visuals for the movies decreased there too) ON tv, how good every character looked. Season 4 wasn’t as bad but it still didn’t touch the art style and animation of Seasons 1 and 2

I wanted more season 2 characters i really liked them

Would love to watch a video about YJ nightwing, for me the way they handled him with all the trying not to become like batman thing is pretty good and his role as a definitive leader even when he is not in the flashlight is pretty good

I loved Season 3, and the final third bit of Season 4. Really sad to hear it’s been cancelled yet again but I can’t act like I’m surprised either.

I love Young Justice, and it's sad that it might go away. However, I hate how they produced season 2, 3 and 4. I wanted to watch the Gen1 team grow up into their season 2 self. Then gradually introduce new members. A lot happens in the comic books and most TV fans don't read comic books. I didn't know about the comic books until Outsiders. Then they pushed all these new characters who barely received development. I don't know who they are and honestly I don't care for them. I believe they rushed the show because they knew about the possible cancellation.

Young justice will always be one of my fav show ever

This season gets a bad reputation, and I think it's unearned. There's certainly criticisms to make of it, and it's fine if the season just doesn't do it for you. But there's a lot of thought put into its writing and themes and characters, and I feel like people are missing that. Outsiders, like all the other seasons, has even more going for it on rewatch. There are so many small details that really fit well together, so much foreshadowing for character reveals and twists. Great video, and I'm really looking forward to more about YJ from you.

Season 3 forced introduced us to way too many new characters (geoforced; halo, forager, etc.) And i would've loved to see more character development from Static, Arsenal, El Dorado, & Tim Drake and then introduced the new characters A minor flaw, but idc i still love series

My biggest issue between season 2 and 3 is that a lot of questions got resolved off screen in the time jump. And season 1 there were a lot of lingering plot threads but they were all answered and season 2. What the Justice League during those missing 14 hours, where is the real roy, what happened to match and the other Xenomorphs. Connor and Megan getting back together, Arsenal healing through his trauma, how static and the rest of the children were convinced to be looked after by the team. It just happens off screen I felt really disconnected from the characters and the relationships I grew to Value over season 2. So season 3 from start to finish had a bad taste in my mouth.

Season 3 made me hate this show. As someone who fought for this show to come back, I genuinely wish it stayed dead. I would much rather have the ending for this show always be the death of Wally West, instead of them drumming him up every single fucking season to tease me, and then using his recent appearance as a way to try and make their "death fake outs" seem more legitimate to the audience.

I really hope they add even more characters for season five, that will surely fix this godforsaken show

Yeah I noticed that too. Like he was such a huge part of season two then he’s just a background character for season 2. Though I know it it’s difficult to give everyone screen time since there are soooo many characters in this show

His story basically ended for now, that's really it. He's around still because well.. he's not dead but there's a reason he's not in the spotlight, his and Scarabs character arcs basically ended at least for now in the S2 finale.

I think more ppl give it hate just bc that’s how anything goes. I found it fine. Bunch of smaller stories that all get tangled into eachother. Then we saw a glimpse of a Zod , Superman & sons fight and it was building towards something BIGGER

The time skip between season 1 and 2 was a big mistake, and it started the trends that led to this season's problems. It means we skip so much of the development of our core cast. It causes the cast to expand, so we get less time with each member of the cast.

Imo it really does feel like they wanted an anthology series lmao. All of the character's arcs felt so complete at the end of season 1, with all of the previous character threads resolved

I love Young justice outsiders it was really awesome and tons of fun and seeing both Jonathan Samuel Kent Superboy and Damian Wayne Robin both exist made me so happy and I am very excited to see hopefully what happens and pray to the gods above that we get a season 5 because this show is really awesome and such a great series that gives us the DC universe I always wanted which I approved. :)

Finally.

The guy who worked on those New 52 animated movies, worked on Young Justice. That's why the characters look like that.

Mannn... I had just caught up with Young Justice this morning just to find out that they don't want to make season 5??? Time to go along with my plan of rewatching season 1 (and maybe season 2)... but this time more depressed. Alas I definitely enjoyed the clear divide between all of the generations of season 3. I get that some people don't like the increasing amount of characters but I really enjoyed how the younger generation acted this time. I felt that that original cast got decent screen time for sure. Finishing season 4 definitely made me love season 3 that much more for sure, because the new cast is still not done with their character development, even after the progress made over these two seasons. Makes me desperate for season 5 that much more...

I liked Outsiders more than most people seemed to. I felt a little disappointed when I realized it was going to focus on entirely new characters, but I ended up really loving those characters and how they were handled. The overarching plot of Darkseid and building towards Final Crisis had me hooked, but I wished they had just pulled the trigger on it this season instead of leaving it for the future. Overall I have mostly positive things to say about this season. That will change pretty drastically for the next season's comments... I'm really looking forward to your Halo video too. She was my favorite new character in Outsiders, and there's a ton to unpack there.

I still think Wally is still alive AND I HATE BEING JERKED AROUND!!! Greg Weismann is such a damn good creator and I hate how his stuff keeps getting canceled

I was okay with the S3 episode being the coda for him, and then they ended it with the reveal that "Wally" was just a psychic projection from M'gann, and then there was his S4 cameo and then the show got canned _again_ before they showed where they were going with that.

@@ToaArcan Because Conner knows that Wally died, so he saw him as a fellow ghost. Notice how "Wally" also changed clothes all of a sudden? Greg Weisman even confirmed this.

We're four seasons in the series that Greg knows is pron to being cancelled and yet he insists on taking his sweet time getting to the end of his story. I understand things like this need time but at this point it should be obvious that time isn't a privilege he should take for granted.

Great video. It's always nice to see video essays that actually tackle the evolving stories and themes from each season rather than just lazy "season 3 bad" fodder. Since you did a video on the video game, I wonder if you've checked out the canon tie-in comics that place throughout various points in the series. The current one takes place a couple of months post season 4.

I didn't feel this season, teen drama is where it should stay but superhero formula is always bigger threats and eventually characters got last as any relatability with people.

Brion was right and i'll stand by that.
