    San Mai is a Japanese term meaning “three layers”. It refers to lamination, a technique in which multiple layers consisting of different types of material are fused with each other. In this case, three steel sheets are welded together, as opposed to the entire blade being composed of one kind of steel. Hundreds of years ago, Japanese bladesmiths employed this technique to forge their katana, or samurai swords. They used a hard steel in the centers of their swords and a softer steel on the outer edges. This combination of steels made the blades both supple and incredibly sharp.

Respekt. :)

    Hey Joe! The blade is called "san mai" which is Japanese for "three pieces". It's a fairly common technique of sandwiching a harder, more brittle steel between two outside layers of tougher softer steel or iron, etc. You'll see it on quite a lot of Japanese kitchen knives and outdoor knives. It allows for a much higher Rockwell of the core steel for higher edge retention (e.g. in the kitchen or wood working), while the outside cladding increases toughness. Unfortunately a lot of production san mai uses fairly cheap steel so it's a bit less of a noticeable improvement.

    I really appreciate these videos it's fun to see how much abuse knives can take... Im no noob when it comes to knives it's been my passion #1 since i was an teenager... I have to say to people who think that this knife is garbage one thing!! it's far from it, VG-10 is a very good steel it sharpens well and can hold both coarse and polished edge well, laminated or not. ( And it's questionable if lamination actually increases the durability of a knife, because usually it just means that the inner piece of steel which forms the cutting edge of the knife is just "protected" by a softer layer on both sides, if done right the outer layers provides protection from rust because it's tempered lower and has thus more "free" chromium carbides left, but does this provide resistance against abuse? Only to a certain level i think... There's enough data these days to show what steels are tough enough to be used in "survival/this knife can be abused knives!! and VG-10 isn't really on of them... Steels like 3V... Cpm-cruWear... Are atm top of the line steels but they are much more expensive because of the powder metallurgy technology... They can take abuse and hold an edge very well, but they are not stainless.... From common stainless steels 420hc and 14c28n are among the toughest, but they don't hold an edge nearly as well as the previously mentioned... And then there are of course the tough plain carbon steels like 5160...52100...80crV2...1084 that can take a lot of abuse, but they are not stainless and don't hold much of an edge... In knives everything is a tradeoff.... A knife that keeps an edge "forever" and cuts well is going to be made from steel that doesn't have much of an corrosion resistance and doesn't take abuse well... As where knife that is indestructible is probably going to be an crappy cutter made from a steel that doesn't hold an edge well and isn't stainless.... That's why the best knives are compromises of these qualities. Also geometries hardness etc plays an role in all of this... So what is the best knife and steel 🤷🏻‍♂️ who knows that's why we buy knife after knife searching the perfect one, without ever succeeding 😂 My current favorites are now, for cutting and edge: holding K390... CPM-S90V...CPM-20cv... For woods carving and batoning: 80crV2... 14c28n... And just for general use edc and such: S30V 420hc... It's kinda funny that being obsessed about so many of these steels and qualities of knives and at what grit to sharpen them, diamonds or Arkansas stones or ceramics.... What is the HRC??? I've basically come back to the starting point... A good knife is a good knife the steel can be basic 1095 or 420HC or "super steel" like S110V or 20cv.... They all dull if you cut into plate or cut a sand imbedded rope, or hit into steel, what matters more is that you know how to use the knife and can put the best edge on it..

    This SRK in V10 laminated steel can take much more of abuse as I would have expected! The process of making this kind of clad material is quite interesting and there are basically 2 different methodes: Explosive cladding or roll bonding. With both types you need to prepare a 'package' with the materials you will bond together. Explosive cladding means you gain the 1st bond via blast/ detonation and you need to roll that slab afterwards in a standard rolling mill to required thickness. With roll bonding you need to prepare a sealed/ vakuumed metal package which get the metal bond by a rolling operation in the rolling mill. Both methods are sophisticated and there are not many manufactureres who are able to produce this kind of clad plates!

    Unfortunately its not how knives work bring me any knife ill break it. I can give you the cheapest steel and it will do better than all these knifes. Steel has different functions. This specific steel design is not meant to get a beating but to have great edge retention and sharpness. I now joe test it for fun but for educational value you must understand the steel. Cold steel makes great knives. Each has his function.

    Was really interested in this test because of the laminated steel, kind of performed like I expected in that the inner steel is too brittle and the outer steel doesn't really do much except to make it an okay pry bar. There's a lot of BS about laminated steels mostly because of westerners who think cheesy ninja movies are historic documentaries and katanas were basically forged from solid dragon cum and quenched in the blood of their enemies. From what I understand the Eastern people were far behind on steel development relative to the Europeans so they did the laminating trick to make their brittle swords shatter less (this was still a far bigger problem with katanas than western swords who started adding carbon and other elements to their forging processes). Now I think it's mostly a marketing scheme because it's expensive to do and you're still left with a meh steel doing all the cutting and tip work with two layers of shit steel clamped to the sides doing basically nothing, a throwback process to when people were basically melting skillets into swords. A tough particle metallurgy steel like 3V should be vastly superior in every possible way.

    San Mai, originated from Chinese 三枚(In 7th century, Japan sent people to Chinese learning the high-level culture then in the world for the national progress, thus they use Chinese since then) means 3 pieces, so as 3 layers. The San Mai is designed for protecting the inner layer, implemented on Samurai swords. Why? Inner layer is with very high hardness but low toughness. Outside 2 layers are softer steel for better toughness. The traditional way to make Samurai swords is to cover clay on the blade then put into heat treatment for toughness, but a critical skill is required or you will fail. Thus, they create a new way and it is called San Mai. Although it has improved the performance of toughness on the blade. One should still take care the blade when using because of the limitation. Your video always remind me don't put the tip of blade into woods then bend it with big angle. KZreadr Lily made Fallkniven S1 failed with the same situation.

    It would be really interesting to see this knife against the metal poll. "In Theory" this knife should be very resistant to catastrophic failure from impacts, even if the center layer fractures it shouldn't propagate to the outside cladding. Most likely you'd see the edge blow out in large chunks before the blade fractures the whole way through.

    That's why I don't really get laminated steels. If anything causes the middle steel to break it will completely ruin the knife tip and edge making it useless. Might as well make the whole knife out of that material. Especially for corrosion resistance - it will only make the sides corrosion resistant aka the only places on the blade that rust makes no difference. Makes sense if you don't have access to any good steel and you're making swords, the conditions that lamination arose. But makes little sense for a knife in an age where you could save the money it takes to perform the laminating process and just get a superior steel.

    @@budthecyborg4575 I suppose but due to the cost of laminating I think a tougher steel could be afforded. The SRK is decently priced at around $100, I wish they still made the 3V SRK to compare as it was around $150-$200. I got the 3V Recon Scout for $200. The other brand notable for lamination is obviously Fallkniven and they're some of the most expensive production knives commonly seen. They're great and all but their steels seem pretty lackluster for the prices.

  • @budthecyborg4575

    @budthecyborg4575

    @@DL-ij7tf In absolute terms definitely the cost of laminating isn't worth it, you're only gaining a minor amount of edge retention by using the harder steel which is arguably worthless in any situation where catastrophic failure is your primary concern. But in terms of making an EDC knife that can take a beating when SHTF lamination is a decent option. Not that the SRK is an EDC knife but people like to pretend.
