Cold starting a KTM tpi the RIGHT way LEAVE the throttle alone!

I have seen multiple videos and posts out there with people struggling to get their TPI bikes to start in the cold and also fouling the spark plug. This is the cold start method outlined in the owner manual and has never failed to start my bike no matter the temperature. If you are an owner that just HAS to touch the throttle please wait at least 20 seconds like I did in the video or you could still flood the bike.....better yet just let it idle.

Thank You.. I flooded my engine with oil and fouled the plug, the other day by trying to start the bike cold with (no cold start) and twisting the throttle, because it would'nt start. Changed spark plug and followed this procedure and the bike ran and idled like normal. Thank You Again (2020 Husky TPI)

Great video, it's honestly crazy to me that people who own these expensive machines really don't know how to take care of them. I've been riding dirtbikes since i was 13 years old and the first thing i really learned was how to warm them up and take care of them. I understand this is different because it's a TPI but none the less people should really read the manual or first understand how to take care of the motorcycle (especially on cold start) I also own a 21' 300XC TPI, fun bike before it blew up on me with 1.5 hours on the hour meter! great video on how to properly warm these things up.

Thanks for this video. I just purchased a 2023 250 TPI and I’m having problems with bogging. Did the research and apparently it most probably is a faulty CCP sensor. I continued my research to find these bikes foul spark plugs like they’re going out of fashion! I hope I can get it running right 👍

Great Vid! I just bought a 2021 KTM XC 250 TPI and have been fouling plugs like crazy! Its in the Dealer's repair Shop and is still fouling plugs. Bike has ran like crap since day one, waiting to hear what KTM says about the problem? Bike has a 30 day Warranty. Really hope they stand by their product.

I have a 2019 and follow this routine exactly. It still takes 5 to 8 times to keep running when starting from cold. It will start and run for 2 seconds then dies. I wait 5 seconds and the same thing. But it Fires up first try and stays running when warmed up, so frustrating. 55 hrs on the bike.

wish I saw this video sooner! Did everything you said not to do and fouled a spark plug... did you just throw a new plug in? or did ya do anything else before putting the new spark plug in (maybe crank the kickstart to displace some of the fuel)?

I had to put in a new plug and then it restarted with the cold start pulled out. It was the only plug I have fouled in 80hours

It really sucks that these bikes are like this now. It's the opposite of how a carb 2 stroke operates. My 2019 300XCW DID NOT need to start this way. You could start it up, take off within 30 seconds and force it to warm up a little quicker by riding around and giving it little gas here and there. my 2020 250XC is trash. its fouled no less than 10-15 plugs in its first 13 hours. it takes literally 5-10 minutes of idling without touching the damn throttle for it to be "warm" enough to take off but even then it still gurgles horribly at low throttle for the first 5 minutes of riding. You really have to clear it out multiple times full throttle just let it gurgle over and over until it finally clears out. It's complete trash. Once you've done 10-15 minutes of warming up the bike runs perfectly but thats just crap.

Did you try running the iridium plug? I have had the same plug for almost 80 hours. I unload my bike and start it and then gear up and it is usually mint and ready to go by the time I am ready. On a side note I have missed your racing videos. I watched your whole last season. Hope you get back taking videos!

@@donnelly1979 man haha I’ve tried so many plugs but keep going back to the BR7ES that KTM recommends. Replaced my ccps twice, TPS head and tuned ECU I’ve tried everything. I’ve finally got it to start pretty consistently without fouling but it’s put such a bad taste in my mouth I think I’m going to sell it. I recently bought a low hour 2017 250XC again same bike I raced on my last season. I might start getting back into racing once I get my bike sorted. Covid happened then I got super busy at work and just kinda fell out of shape and lost interest for a bit there. All the races are 3-4+ hours away each direction.
