I suspect something is wrong with the low pressure system here, most likely injectors with internal leakage, which causes this kind of starting behavior when the engine has been standing for some time. This engine should fire right up at 0 degrees. There are no glow plugs in these engines, although some are equipped with a grid heater.

Depends on what engine. But most don’t, instead they have intake heaters.
It really shouldn’t be struggling that much in just 0c…
