Lyrics:
Once I smoked a Danneman cigar
I drove a foreign car
Baby that was years ago
I left it all behind
I had a friend, I heard she died
On a needle she was crucified
Baby that was years ago
I left it all behind for my
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Come-on, come-on, come-on
I don't mind takin' charity
From those that I despise
Baby I don't need your love
I don't need your love
Baby you can shout at me
But you can't meet my eyes
I don't really need your love
I don't need your love
I got my
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Come-on, come-on, come-on
I'm sitting on the beach drinkin' rocket fuels - oh yeah!
I spent the whole night breakin' all the rules - oh yeah!
Mending every minute of the day before
Watching the ocean, watching the shore
Watching the sunrise, and thinkin' there could never be more
Never be more
Anytime you want to find me
I don't have a telephone
I'm another world away
But I always feel at home
With my
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Come-on, come-on, come-on
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Cheap wine and a three-day growth
Come-on, come-on, come-on

Good on ya mate! I’m a kiwi married to an Englishman-he’s not so fussed on Cold Chisel-I know! It’s madness…
Just discovered these guys as they never got any airplay in Canada. What a premium band! Man, I got some catching up to do!

Have fun! I'm sure there's many an old Chisel fan out there who'll be happy to give you pointers on what to listen to. Jimmy Barnes the lead singer emigrated with his family from Scotland as a wee nipper hence the accent on the "o" vowells. The lead guitar, Ian Moss, was our answer to Queen's Brian May, a truly great rock musician who had a solo career after the band split up. My fave song, for what it's worth, is "Ita" which is off their "East" album and is a tongue in cheek song about an 80s female celeb who (it has to be said) went on to do good work for fundraising for AIDS relief in the 80s. Enjoy my friend and when you're tired of Chisel move on to the incomparable Deborah Conway x

It was considered bogan style rock, but highly melodic, almost classical construction. Both Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss were world class rock singers. Look up Ian Moss's songs, also had no.1 hits after leaving the Chisels. Amazing guitarist also.

As an interesting aside, Jimmy discovered his abandoned / orphaned son who had become a Broadway singer. His name is David Campbell, a legend in his own right. More of a classical voice, but very talented.

@@KJ_SC No it didn't. Horrorshow write some incredible songs with lyrics every bit as clever and observational as Don Walkers and.... highly embedded and referential to Australian culture. No it's not the Australia of 1981 it's 2019 that's really the only difference. The style may be totaly different but the quality of songwriting is just as good (IMO). I think the issue is that what is commercialy popular is mostly pretty dumbed down and crap these days whereas at the time of songs like Cheap Wine, commercial songs were generally a lot more complex/interesting musicaly/lyricly. Look at another Chisel song like "Forever Now". It's almost fusion in parts and was a radio hit.

Still holds up Great song. I was too young in the late 80s early 90s and my parents were too conservative to share these great songs with me. I appreciate them so much listening to them now.

In the last two years, three close friends left the world in horrible ways. None of these cool edgy television drama series we get on streaming services come close to what I've had to go through. Jimmy looked like Bazza from down the road who'd knock your block off if you looked at him sideways, but he had a once in a lifelime voice.
This band was that rarest of animals in rock n roll: they were the real deal
This reminds me of BBQ's, family gatherings and playing down at Barney Point Beach in Gladstone. Me old girl being able to whistle out to us kids from the house, when she wanted us to come home. Wayyyy back in the early 80's. Man, it's amazing thinking back now and what we took for granted.
To anyone that says Jimmy can't sing, I beg them to fault his outstanding performance and range in this.

A lot Chisel songs express this point of view of someone who's seen too much and turned their back on it, but they're not broken by it. Maybe it looks that way to people on the outside, but inside the guy understands himself and he's doing what he wants to do.

Cold chisel and Jimmy Barnes are Aussie icons. The best way to spot a Aussie in any bar anywhere in the world is sing a line of any chisel song and listen for the guy that continues the song (best to try it at around closing time) it is a big part of our culture bigger than kangaroos and drop bears.
