Limu is the Hawaiian generic name for all seaweed. Ogo is the Japanese word for the species Gracilaria Coronopifolia, which is commonly used for poke among other species. The Hawaiian name for Ogo is Manauea. From "Limu, An Ethnobotanical Study of Some Edible Hawaiian Seaweeds" by Isabella Kauakea Yau Yung Aiona Abbott & Eleanor Horswill Williamson, 1974.

Purple uni, monkeyface prickleback, limpets, mussels, octopus, lobsters, coral fish, blue meat lingcod, stranded bullwhip kelp (pickled in a jar now! :( not available in Asia yet though) etc. are some of the things Taku got from beautiful tidepools and incorporated very nicely in his dishes (started 5 years ago and still going). Found Taku's yt channel when fighting autoimmune and dealing with excruciating pain 5 years ago (I'm on remission now). Taku's contents (Taklyn the World's content also) are such godsent painkillers. Thank you, Taku and Jocelyn. Now, you are writing a cookbook! So proud of you and Jocelyn! Way to go! (1st time leaving a comment cause I'm waiting for the 1 hour movie again from you!)

Taku, you did a very good thing for a stranger, and your reward was finding an excellent spot to fish! You might try crushing up a few mussels to leave a scent trail in the water or marinating your soft plastics with them. They are also good bait, but use a small treble hook.

An indicator that it is limu manauea (the one used in Hawaiian poke) is if it turns from reddish/brown when raw to green when cooked. I believe that it did occur in your video when picked it was reddish, and green when you ate it from your spoon. Google the net for Ogo namasu recipes where you blanch this limu (10 seconds until it changes color) and pickle it (vinegar/sugar) with sweet maui onions. Many variations where you can add other ingredients soy sauce, dried shimp, top shell/abalone, Hawaiian chili peppers, green onions, sesame seeds/oil, etc. Crunchy good!!!

When I was a kid (8 years old) we used to spend summers at the beach on the Maine coast. Mussels covered the rocks. While I loved clams and oysters, i didn't realize that mussels were edible.. Once I tried them at a seafood restaurant, I fell in love with them. I think back to my summers in Maine and regret not grabbing them and eating them. ,
