Hi Alisa, I was astonished to learn that at Joe's studio there were no appointments. Jay: "You came in whenever you wanted to, you did your thing...there were always teachers there...From your very first appointment you were trained to be independent." From todays perspective, where Pilates and Yoga studios all run on a strict schedule, that is a mind blowing concept. I started to think, how could this work? It occurs to me that maybe it was Joe's personality that made this concept work. Maybe your name has to be Joseph Pilates to pull this off. However, I also wonder if anybody in recent years has tried to recreate this kind of studio operation? It also occurs to me that maybe the reason Joe was able to operate a studio this way was because the culture was different then. Maybe people today need to be spoon-fed and coddled. Maybe all the online videos reinforce this idea that people need continual instruction to function, the way people can't drive a car now without being guided by Google Maps. Maybe the way Joe ran his studio compared to studios today is connected with broader sociological and cultural changes? The reason this is so relevant to me personally is that I'm getting ready to open my second exercise studio (with a break of about seven years in between) and I've been contemplating the same kind of operation style that Joe used, where people are expected to be semi-autonomous. One advantage of this is that it could potentially bring the price point way down. So, when I found out that Joe did exactly this kind of operation, I was blown away.
