You had me at Orange Chili Sauce to accompany the coconut shrimp. Definitely doing this, now that I finally trust frozen shrimp being as fresh, as going to an uptown market. I make shrimp scampi all the time, besides doing them on the BBQ on a skewer.

One of my absolute favorite childhood snacks! I haven't eaten good coconut shrimp in a long time; I will have to make this! I grew up in Florida and lived about 25-30 minutes from the popular beaches in south Miami, and I fondly remember eating this outside with my family, along with non-alcoholic piña coladas 😋

I have only had this dish one time that it lived up to its promise, and that was so long ago I don't even remember what restaurant I had it at. That one time, however, has haunted my taste buds, and I still yearn to taste a perfect Coconut Shrimp once again! I do believe that you have cracked the code. And I also love to use marmalade to make sauces; it's why I make a batch every year from my own oranges. I don't have sour oranges, but the marmalade is still very delicious, and makes beautiful sauces. Thank you, Marc, for perfecting this dish!

Hi Kathy, I know the feeling. I think the issue is that most places fully butterfly the shrimp, so it's like greasy coconut with shrimp leather sandwiched in between. Homemade marmalade sounds great👍🏼 Hope this is able to live up to your taste memory!

I just made this with extra-firm high protein tofu and it's delicious! I will have to work on the seasonings for the tofu; I marinated it in a little fish sauce and sugar, but I didn't have the patience to wait for it to fully absorb. One thing I don't like about cooking seafood is having to handle it. I also don't like having my house smell like fish for days. This was very satisfying and I avoided both of those negatives. I don't even know if you have this type of tofu in Japan. It's a health food type of product. It is super firm, which is nice when you don't want it to fall apart, but it doesn't absorb flavors as well. Thanks for the inspiration!

Happy to hear you enjoyed this, and great idea using tofu! Have you tried freezing and defrosting it? It should make the texture a little more porous so any seasonings you add soak in. I use the method in my vegan katsu curry recipe to marinate the tofu.

@@NoRecipes I had thought about freezing it, but it was kind of a spur-of-the-moment inspiration to make this. Next time! I'm going to try your vegan katsu curry next, but with softer tofu. I bought some Marmite -so delicious! I can't stand Vegemite and I thought it was going to be the same thing. I was so happy to discover it's not! Thanks for the suggestion!

@@kathcares Hahaha I spent a lot of childhood summers in Australia and can't say I'm a big fan of vegemite either. We have a product here in Japan called Hypermeast which is a spent yeast extract made by Asahi that tastes like pork and is used as a flavoring in a lot of packaged foods because it's cheaper than using real meat extract. I was looking for something similar that's more widely available and marmite was the closest thing (though it's still not as good as Hypermeast).
