    I kept hearing people saying they cried during this movie and at first I wasn't sure about it. Until I saw it with my family yesterday and by the time it ended, I had misty eyes. It was also nice to see so many Mexican American families in my theatre(which had Spanish subtitles) including my own enjoying the film. So glad they nailed the representation.

    Say no more about Olaf. I work at a theater and almost every time a coco theater starts playing someone comes out to whine about where the movie is. People actually ask for refunds because it takes too long to get to the movie. Managers printed out that there is the featurette before the movie because so many people asked to complain to a manager. THANKS DISNEY. PRAY FOR US.

    I'm surprised people in America weren't prepared for the Frozen short. That thing was really promoted and every time it said, "In theaters with Coco" or something along those lines. Do people not pay attention? Or is it that every time they saw the Olaf trailer they skipped it or changed the channel so they never saw that tidbit at the end??

    My sister took my nephew to see this the other day. She told us that he didn't really like it largely due to the opening short. When it played, he looked at her and said, "I don't want to watch this." She said that it ruined the rest of the movie for him because he was just uninterested after that. She also said that the other little kids in the theater complained too, thinking they were watching something Frozen-related instead. It just goes to show that you really should stick to original shorts to avoid confusion with children. Also, a half hour "short"? Really?

  • @HissinSpit

    @HissinSpit

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, that's understandable, but I don't think the problem has anything to do with them not liking Frozen as a whole, considering my nephew actually does like it. I think the main problem is that they were little kids and don't really understand the concept of how the shorts work. To them, it probably really confused them because they thought they were rewatching Frozen instead of the movie they went there to see. And yeah, I'm glad they have good taste too. I haven't seen it yet, but it looks really good :D

    aacsmiles That is very wrong. There are more similarities between the two. A misunderstood son, who only wants to play music is regretful because their family is pushing them to follow a specific career goal. The family tries almost crushing their dreams, saying it's forbidden. Then, through hijinks, the son finds himself stuck in the land of the dead, surrounded by his dead family members. He has to get back before the day of the dead is over, otherwise he'll be trapped forever. And with love and music, he saves the day.

    Many of the buldings in the world of the dead and Miguel's town are based on real ones btw. For example, the customs building is Pixar's version of the Palacio Postal in Mexico City. Also Mexico City's Metropolitan cathedral makes a quick appearance; you have to look closely or you'll miss it. Miguel's town is obviously based on Tacambaro, Patzcuaro, and other magical towns in Michoacán. While the palace where Ernesto first meets Miguel is the Gran Hotel de La Ciudad de Mexico (especially that stained glass ceiling). Morelia's stone acueduct appears in the form of a bridge in the world of the dead. The Casino Español is Ernesto's house. Guanajuato's Teatro Juárez is the outside of the customs building; as well as Guanajuato was used as the main model for the streets and light posts of the world of the dead. Also the three pyramids connecting the world of the living and the one of the dead are from Teotihuacan. And the great pyramid of Cholula with the Iglesia de los Remedios (which is on top of the pyramid) makes an appearance during one of Ernesto's concerts. Also real life Mexican icons such as María Félix, Dolores Del Río, Emiliano Zapata, Agustín Lara, Jorge Negrete, Cantinflas, and El Santo make an appearance. As well as a Pedro Infante Cruz inspired character, who's obviously Ernesto de La Cruz. It's an homage to many things, but first and foremost to Mexico.

    For all of those saying Coco looks alot like The Book of Life, yes you're right. It's day of the dead themed and talks about the importance of family and remembering family. HOWEVER, those suspicious of it being a rip off can put that to rest. This movie obviously took a LOT of time to create, it's probably been in conception long before The Book of Life released. These things don't happen in a couple of years, they're like 5-10 year long projects that start with an idea that gets molded and altered through the hands of genius writers and animators. So to say that Coco is a rip off to The Book of Life, isn't accurate in the slightest. The Book of Life in comparison to Coco is what home video rip offs are Disney classics which are also posted on Lewtoons. Sometimes rip offs come soon after disney, but in other cases they come BEFORE. There are cases where lower budget studios will take a rumored concept that disney is working on and rush to release it. Not saying The Book of Life did, but that may be something to consider. It's obvious here, the story is original and not cliche in the slightest and was revised multiple times to get this polished project.

    Sydney Weber they got the creators of El Tigre and Guillermo Del Toro to work on book of life. Pretty sure that it's not even close to a pre-rip-off and the very very specific concept that Pixar chose seems way to close not to think that team was heavily influenced by book of life

    The story supervisor on Coco said that they started working on the film a couple of years before the Book of Life was announced. Both studios were working with the same concept of Mexican culture and the day of the dead, thinking they were the only ones doing that at the time.Yes, they explore similar themes but that's because they are inspired by the same event - the day of the dead, in which music and family play a big role.

    There's been a lot of fly around rumors surrounding the two, but for the most part they're pretty generalized or outright false. Like said before, they both began process around the same time and while I do think that the pixar team may have taken some notes from BOL's successes, it's far from a rip off by any means. As another person said, there's no battle between the creators of the two films and instead is a lot of love and excitement! I feel we should just take the films for what they contain and not what the other one does or doesn't. Like yes, they're both about similar themes and settings but Book of Life had a bit more to do with Spanish culture than Mexican culture vs Coco which took mostly from the latter; BOL had a dumb-kids-at-a-museum framing device where as to my knowledge Coco has no framing device whatsoever; Coco had an all hispanic cast whereas BOL did not; BOL contains almost no original music where Coco does; I could go on, but I think at the end of the day it doesn't matter- You're doing a disservice to both films by only remembering them for the similar subject matter to the other one, whereas we should take both art pieces for what they are and not what they aren't. It's forgetting all the hard individual work done on each to create both such beautiful, rich films.

    As a Mexican, I believe that Coco is better than The Book of Life due to the fact that, for me, The Book of Life it's just a Romeo and Juliet story that's day of the death themed and with some Spanish stuff; Coco in the other hand, has a lot of references to our actual culture (for example: the aztec pyramids being the base of the land of the death) and the moral of it's story ,remembering, is what Day of the Death is about, not some sort of romance between a couple of characters that are as Spanish as they can get.

    Excuse me, "Romeo and Juliet story"? No, the Book of Life was not that. Romeo and Juliet is some of the worst shit I've ever read, and the Book of Life is a lot better than that. Because most of all, they're not whiny hormonal pubescent dumbass teenagers. The love story is actually heartfelt, and you can see how Manollo really loves Maria. It's a nice story about forgiving, letting go, and facing your fears.

  • @Eye-Of-The-Beholder

    @Eye-Of-The-Beholder

    6 жыл бұрын

    Skel the Shapeshifter Well, I guess you kinda have a point there. You see, I was using the term 'Romeo and Juliet' to refer to the fact that, form me, Manolo and Maria are an okay couple that love each other, but lack that one bond built out of friendship that "true lovers" have. Yes, Manolo literally scaped the underworld for his one true love, but when I see them together, I just don't get that one feeling that makes you go "Just kiss already!" But I agree, The book of life is an okay movie with good characters and an okay plotline; but I feel like the moral of the story doesn't ties up that well with the tradition of Day of the death; the romance wasn't forced, but the inclusion of the tradition into a romantic situation kinda was. But yeah, I kinda exaggerated. So, sorry for the misunderstanding, my bad. UwU

    Ey, just got back from this! And yes, the Frozen animation wasn't great... I always look on the bright side, so let's just ignore it all and say that the part where they animated one of Olaf's songs in wool-sweater format was pretty cool! Same goes for the beginning of Coco, and the paper animation (There's probably a word for those, I don't know it). Another thing: This was probably the Pixar movie that made me cry the most, and that's a pretty hard feat.

    The Frozen short is long because it was originally meant to be a TV Christmas special, but then Coco started getting bad press for being a " Book Of Life " clone, so they stuck Frozen in front of it. ;/ Really unfair that there can be 600 Christmas movies, but TWO Day Of The Dead movies ....oh no, can't have that.... sigh.

    Bobby Hill it also didn't how they rejected the guy who made book of life pitch when first show it to Disney. With them saying no ones is interested in a Mexican based holiday movie. Then they saw how well it did and decided to make there own version of it. So ya it did get hate, but the major one was that Disney tried to copyright day of the dead at one point

  • @taiasoncole8148

    @taiasoncole8148

    That's not true... He went to Dreamworks and they were the ones who rejected it not him and told him no one would be interested in a Mexican movie. Also they started production on CoCo way before Book of Life came out. Also the copyright was a mistake, they were going to use it as a title (They copyright all of their titles so no one else can use them), but didn't think of the implications and once they got backlash they immediately apologized, changed the name of the movie, and hired cultural consultants to help them avoid making similar mistakes. The creator of Book of Life actually strongly supports this movie if you check his Twitter.

    It was also Disney that said that as well but at the same time they did had coco in script form only at the time hence another reason why they denied it, but after they saw how well it did that's when they change there opinion. I do NOT understand the hate for Cars 3 however cause that movie tried. Maybe people were still just hung up on Cars 2? As for the Boss Baby, it was decent. I actually expected something worse, but it worked for what it was. Can we at least agree that the LEGO Batman movie was better?

    This makes me really happy. I've been nervous about this film for cultural sensitivity vs. changing tides at pixar and things like that, so it's good to know that, even though from a more casual film critic point of view, this was still a solid movie. It makes me relieved. On a side note, I did happen to see the Lego Ninjago Movie in between this review and the MLP one, and while I totally see your point on the "having it both ways" arguement, I still personally feel it fared better on this list than where you placed it. (I did also see the smurfs movie in between reviews as well, and mostly agree with you on that one.) I think it should've taken the 6th spot from DM 3, which I did see upon realise and hated a LOT more. But of course this is your list, not mine, and I'm actually pretty interested to hear your thoughts on movies like Leap, the Star and Ferdinand because I've cared so little about them that hearing your invested review is going to be at least entertaining and at most, pretty insightful. Can't wait!! Love your channel!

    I was also crying. The movie was great and "Remember Me" really did make me cry. Thinking on it now, I realized that Miguel lives in similar circumstances to me. As a small child, I loved singing. I said that I wanted to be a singer, but my dreams were crushed when my mom said that we were Muslim and I couldn't be a singer. Now, I'm not religious at all, though my family has no idea about that. And they won't anytime soon. These days, at 13, I still love singing and think I'm fairly good at it, but I also love writing. I'm good at it, and I'm still learning. And Miguel is in similar circumstances to me. He loved doing something, but his family didn't accept him. That is VERY relatable.

    The choice of making Coco 'too real' was, of course, deliberate. There is a very contrasting visual between here an the rest of... the movie actually, but at the end she comes as the actual plot device and resolution, so she being depicted as from her own time makes their weight in the movie more noticeable. I see why people could find her creepy, but the look is totally justified.
