Cockatiel Behaviours and Their Meanings! | TheParrotTeacher

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Cockatiel behaviours and their meanings / what they mean !
I've covered as many behaviours as I can and tried to vary the clip lengths to make things interesting!
Cockatiels display such a wide variety of behaviours, it's tough to get them all in! I'll be making different videos for crest and noise meanings!
All the clips feature our cockatiels Chip and Fish as I wanted to show you only behaviours I'm witnessing myself.

    Finally a vid that explains what the thing was when 2 birds, 1 lowers their head and the other is 'biting' the neck. I thought this was fighting but it is bonding/friendship cleaning. Never found out, but now I do.

    Hey there, glad it was helpful! Yeah, generally as long as they are being gentle it's mostly an affection thing. It's like if we pet their necks gently! It's only ever an issue if one is actively plucking feathers out!

    I have 4 tiels and have never seen them do almost half of these. At least I learned mine aren't that territorial. They mostly just yell, steal food off plates, destroy any piece of paper they can find and dump stuff on the ground, preferably when we're working with said stuff. Never thought I'd be parrot-proofing a house.

  • @TheParrotTeacher

    @TheParrotTeacher

    Hey there! I'm surprised more haven't cropped up with so many tiels! Although, some do depend on gender and flock dynamics! Ours yell lots too, destroy things and dump stuff during work lol. We don't usually let them steal snacks though as some things can be harsh for their health! Parrot proofing seems to be a necessity! Ours love going on the curtain pole and chewing the wallpaper/wood. We've had to put woven mats up there to stop them!

    @@TheParrotTeacher We had to put a net over the bookcase, a net under the stairs, put cardboard or fabric covers under the light fixtures they like to sit (and poop from). There's a part of the house that isn't quite finished yet, which is the part they like to eat - they are using exposed concrete to dull the beaks and one of them likes to eat the wall. We got the original 2 from a place that kept them in their cage for years so they now never go in the cage. They were a bonded pair and successfully become parents after we made them a nesting box, so that's where the other 2 come from. The eggs were almost single handedly hatched by the dad, the mom was on them maybe 2 hours a day. Now the mama is uninterested in having more eggs, while the dad is super into the idea, which is where most of the screaming is coming from. He is not a good singer.

    @@kittecat963 lol blimey that sounds like a handful! One of our conures was the same. She never got out so we try to remedy that now! Might be an obvious one so forgive me if you’ve tried, but have you tried stationing training to get them to go to a play stand or place on que! May save you some hassle with the netting! The boys as naughty as they are generally come down when they get around the rail defences and we notice! Lol probably good for her as her body is the one that has to take all the strain of it!

    @@TheParrotTeacher we tried training them, but they aren't interested. Since they have each other to keep company they don't want to learn any tricks, and the kids were raised by them to be free thinkers too. They used to stay in one room but once the babies started flying they would bump into the walls so we moved them to the lounge area and they now have free reign of the house. It's not that bad, just took some getting used to. We've had them for 3 years now and the biggest adjustment was learning to hide important things. We love them despite everything!

    Hey Jamie, Sadly in our experience that doesn’t usually mean going no.2! Parrots usually do this to either get ready to fly, re set their feathers or relax! It could be your parrot has learned to link the behaviours or is chilling so decides to drop one!

  • @TheParrotTeacher

    @TheParrotTeacher

    3 жыл бұрын

    @NightMare Hey there, That's interesting, however it's not how our birds or any of our clients do it! It could be a learned behaviour or more likely they are preparing to fly or to move (hence the wing movement) then that is triggering the poo response.

  • @davidp4180

    @davidp4180

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TheParrotTeacher I've also experienced the wing stretch, then poop. When he is out of his cage and he just randomly stretches but doesn't fly, he then drops it. I would say it is nearly every time since we started letting him out of the cage at an early age. We have always known it as a signal that it is coming.

    Hey David, Thanks for the comment! I have to admit I'm finding this unusual, as from our own experiences + loads of others (I even did a poll) it just isn't the case! Years ago, my cockatiel were waddling across the carpet, exploring one day: one of them came across an earwig that had got inside. He grabbed it with his beak (seemingly out of curiosity), but immediately dropped it when it squirmed-didn't know what to do with it. If one of the Japanese quail I had years prior to my cockatiel had seen the earwig, they would have gobbled it right down.

    Thank you so much for this! I’m getting ready to get a cockatiel in the summer and your vids (and Sophie’s) have been fabulous at educating. These behaviours are also similar in budgies actually. My budgie came to watch with me and he was very curious about Chip and Fish. I was like ‘that’s what you do too so don’t judge!’ 😂 he’s still a baby so I’m hoping they will get along. He loves cockatiel songs.

  • @TheParrotTeacher

    @TheParrotTeacher

    Hey S M That is carefresh. It's one of the safe substrates you can use. It's not safe for them to ingest no. If they ate a tiny bit it'd do no harm, but any bird that regularly eats toys or substrates etc should be discouraged. Shredding on the other hand is natural and perfectly fine. Our birds routinely chew their bedding, but they never actually eat any, just spit it out.

    Hey Elijah, It's likely due to his past experience for sure. We had similar issues with our rescue conures, but they are now much better and step up/play. The good news is there is LOTS you can do to work on taming your cockatiel, all it takes is patience and effort. I have lots of videos on the topic, so do check out my channel. Briefly put: Do target training - it's one of the best forms of training for parrots, scared ones especially. Work on bonding - watch my video! No angry hiss of doom? I've seen it in videos, pretty sure the translation on that is get away from me or I will bite you. Never seen Buddy do it. He has never done the beak tap territorial thin either. Love when he opens his wings a little when singing lol. He doesn't open them as much as your boys do though. He does do a downward eyeballing, with his head side to side. Pretty sure that is curiosity. It happens a lot when I am doing something near the floor with toys, or treats. My budgies do that a lot as well. Still working on the scritches. He bows his head a lot. I move my fingers towards him he backs away. When I approach with my face and give scritches using my nose, he loves it. I think I just have a weirdo lol. We are still working on 6 years of abuse issues from his previous owner. He might get there one day. If not I get a good smell of him. I am sure that makes me weird, but I love how he smells lol. He used to reek like cologne. His previous owner was either spraying it on Buddy, or just used so damn much of it in his room the bird was marinated it in. That took just over a month to get rid of the smell on Buddy. He has respiratory issues from it as well. I was worried I might have to clip his wings because of it.

    Hey An! Sadly I couldn't get it on camera. They so rarely hiss it's a really tough behaviour to get! The closest we get is barking lol! The translation is correct too! We love that behaviour too, the wings are the cutest. The tapping is mostly a Fish thing, Chip only does it on occasion! It's possible he just likes your nose more as it's like a beak to them! Just keep trying though he may decide its ok! That's pretty poor of his prior owner :( But at least he doesn't have to deal with it now! It's also not weird at all, we like how our little ones smell too lol

  • @TheParrotTeacher

    Hey Aoife, I'd look at other factors in relation to that. Is she eating/drinking ok? Does she have lots of fun things to do in and out of her cage? Wow what a fantastic video especially for an absolute beginner like myself. First video of yours I've seen & immediately subscribed. I think if I'd seen "crop clearing" without knowing what it was I woukd freak out & worry something was wrong lol. Thank you so much x
