I have two cockatiels (I think they do much better in pairs); one is the tamest guy in the world, sits on my shoulder, likes to have his head rubbed, etc., the other guy always keeps about two feet away. Sometimes will ride on my shoulder, but otherwise he does not like to be handled and will try to bite me if I get too close. I imagine you need to have handled them gently from when they were chicks in order for them to be comfortable with people. But I don't really know -- perhaps it is genetic and each bird responds differently.

I'm glad you mentioned the "dander". A lot of people are surprised by it. Cockatiels have powdery feathers like Cockatoos. The feather dust is normal for them and a sign of healthy feathering. Because of that they may not be the best choice for a person who has respiratory issues. Birds are social creatures and want to interact positively with their humans. I love the cuddly, clingy tendencies but if you take them out at regular times, as close to the same time each day as you can, they will get used to the "schedule". They are very smart. Love seeing Pearl and Pillow. Thanks for the great videos!

Try going with a finch or a sparrow from a breeder first. I love my parrots so much but my first bird ever was a house sparrow and still my favorite bird i have ever owned. A great starter bird, gets ya used to having a bird around. My girl was a rescue and couldn't fly, and so id carry her around in my pocket through the neighborhood. She was my best friend growing up. As a cockatiel owner, there is a lot more issues than listed here. (For example, I've owned a bird that had constant night terrors so id have to sleep with him next to my bed and be ready to wake up and calm him at a moments notice, no sleep ever, and a parrot who is a violent hormonal foot fetishists.) Love my birds, you'll love them too, but start small!

I still haven't gotten a pet bird since the timing isn't good but ironically I had to raise two wild birds. Nestlings had fallen out of their nest and the nest was too high to put them back in. Parents didn't notice them from the ground and some of their siblings who had also fallen had starved/dried to death. There was no bird rehabilitation centers nearby. I did a lot of googling and the nestlings did really well, they made it into independency. It was a really nice experience even though it was a lot of work, they had to be fed every 30 minutes or so. When I started to get them used to the wild they would still fly on my shoulders or sit on my head and then fly back to the trees. Gradually they got more and more independent and now they can fend for themselves. I still see them flying around and while they don't come to sit on me anymore, they do come pretty close and answer to my voice. I can see myself getting a pet bird one day even more surely now haha. Thanks for the tips!

Once our front door was open and a cockatiel just sat right outside our door and then flew inside and landed on our fruit basket! She also landed on my sister's plate on the fish lol. She was hungry so we fed her seeds and gave her water. We were really surprised how social and brave this bird was and we kept her for 4 days until we found the owner. She was very intelligent and would literally rock her head to Michael jackson's songs!!! She was also such an attention seeker and kept following my dad around the house lol. She would chirp so loud whenever someone left the room. People also need to be aware that cockatiels are extremely loud especially in the mornings. She was so adorable and loved sitting on everyone's shoulder and did not bite. Very well trained! We missed her:(

I just got my first cockatiel ever today. She’s 6 months old and we got her from a close friend from my mom. She is a hand raised one and I am really surprised that she likes being pet and she was trying to chill on the bed with me and eat my food. She adapted real quick. Her feathers are clipped and I’m gonna let her grow them out bc I have “bird dogs” and I would feel safer if she could fly. I named her nugget :D

I had a male cockatiel that was an aviary bird but still tame, because he lacked a fear instinct. While I was on my laptop he would come down and start pecking and pulling the keys off while I was typing doing work. Then I got him a smaller netbook and put him on it next to where I was sitting to have him peck at that instead. He only pecked at the keys on the same keyboard I was typing on. Only time he ever pecked at me gently but feverishly, was when I would try coax him down from his ceiling swing. He loved sitting up there.

This enables her to be near to me and join in with what I'm doing (in her mind at least). I can continue working and she has the company she needs and feels included. Mind you, she has got me well trained- I've found myself using my dominant hand for head scritches and typing left handed too many times to mention!

My cockatiel Gilbee can be a bit clingy & if he gets annoying while I'm working on my computer, I just pop him back in his cage. Since his cage is next to my computer, he'll settle down & sit "near" me. (I have a large cage with a couple of perches near the bottom on the side next to me.) I've had both budgies & cockatiels, & my one budgie got cancer, another had some illness that baffled my vet, but we were able to save him by giving him sugar water of all things.XD My first 'tiel had gotten sick with a bad chest infection that he passed to me & as much as I kept my contact to a minimum, got it back from me & we did this for about 2 months before he got so bad he was suffering & I had him put down. My Gilbee did get a cold a couple of years ago, but he recovered & he and my new budgie Cookie have been pretty healthy so far. :D As for biting, Jaki my female budgie used to BITE HARD & always drew blood. Chicken Nugget(a budgie) never bit me & neither did my first 'tiel Mel. Gilbee will peck you if you accidentally touch a pin feather while giving him head skritches & sometimes he does it just because, but he's very placid & I would recommend a 'tiel over a budgie for a child if they want a bird they can play with. Cookie is still skittish & afraid of hands & I've him almost a year now & have made an effort to try to hand tame him, but he ain't having it. XD So I enjoy him as he is & I have him in a big cage so he has plenty of room to fly in it & a lot of toys to play with. Gilbee, if you open the cage for whatever reason, will come over to you as quickly as he can. He's funny in that he has a big cage, but climbs around it, instead of flying. XD You're right in that 'tiels make a bigger mess. XD As for food, I find it costs about the same for both types of food. Same with vet visits.

My birds have an open cage and fly around my house. The first problem is you have to clean up their poop, although it is not too bad as they are small birds. The bigger problem is they like to chew everything. Any book you leave on the table will be ragged-edged in a few days, as will the sides of wood cabinets and doors. They also love climbing into confined spaces, which is a problem if they get into a cabinet drawer -- a few times I have found them trapped in the base cabinet below. Also, once I opened up a hole in the drywall to repair something and the next day the birds disappeared down inside the wall and I had to fish them out. Now I know to cover all holes with pieces of cardboard. To give them something to climb into I give them cardboard boxes with two holes in them -- if you don't provide a second exit they will tear one open themselves. They love to climb inside of the boxes and they will spend a lot of time tearing up the insides or simply sit there for hours at a time staring at the walls. After a few months the cardboard box is so torn up I have to throw it away and start again. But a nice cardboard box seems to be their ideal nesting house. This tendency to climb into confined spaces can pose genuine dangers; always keep them out of a room if you are heating an oven, keep the toilet lid closed, and keep the kitchen drawers closed.

Great video as always! The first aspect, how Cockatiels are clingy, is good for me. My budgies that recently escaped always shied away from my hand, no matter my attempts to make them feel safe. A clingy bird would reassure me that I *am* a good bird owner. The second aspect of them being messy worries my mum a lot more than it worries me, as I could clean it up. I get a thrill from having a bird that will give me things to do, even if its cleaning. The third aspect is probably the one of the ones that concerns me, but I’ve *experienced* bites from my budgies, and they bite harder than a Cockatiel could. The medical things would be a small problem, but I’ve had birds before, and although they never required special medications, they had check-ups and wing clippings, so I could handle it. This is my opinion!

hi Krista! love your channel! I have a cockateal which I bought since very young (about 8 weeks old) and hand fed her formula until it was able to eat on her own. I thought that would bring her closer to me and make her tamed but instead she seems more like she is always watching out for herself. I do have children in the house so I don't know if that is why she doesn't feel safe all of the time. Sometimes she will fly to me and I can see she wants to be around me, but there's a lot of times when she is very aggressive if I go near hear. She does bite a whole lot. I would appreciate any advice! :)

My cockatiel was a sweetheart, yes they have dander and are clingy but so are a lot of birds that have bonded with us, small and large. As someone who had budgies, it was a huge surprise when Dad brought home a cockatiel out of the blue. The main things we had to get used to were: 1. Chalky dusty dander 2. Much sharper toenails 3. Noise volume. But Dad's cockatiel was the SWEETEST bird ever. Always cuddling, always asking for scritches, and forever desperately trying (and failing) to fit in with my three budgies... ♡

Compared with budgies, cockies are far more dependent and have NO sense of humor (budgies playfighting can work them into a frenzy). They are also far more manipulative (little divas that will arrange a family in a pecking order in a manner of weeks). They are also, alas, more addictive.

E M O T I O N S hand raised birds tend to be more friendly towards human hands and stuff. They bite less and go with whatever you want them to do while the one's who aren't hand raised would bite if scared. Btw it is possible to tame them no matter if they are hand raised or not but that requires Patience and you have to give them alot of attention in the beginning when you get them.

E M O T I O N S - Also, a hand-raised bird knows human touch and companionship much stronger and earlier on than one that's not. It's what they've been used to since birth, so they crave it.
