We had cocktiels when I was growing up. They did a better job at letting us know that someone had pulled into the driveway than our dogs did.

I swear I’ll be walking up to our door and hear my cockatiel start squawking before I’m close enough for her to see me, it amazes me every time! I didnt know it was normal for most to do that! I always thought she was psychic 😂😂

As a cockatiel owner of three years, it's great and unintentionally funny watching you struggle with stuff that's a regular Tuesday for us (stubbornness with food, neophobia and skittishness, taciturnity, etc).

I have a cockatiel named Dino who is 27 years old. He can be a bit cranky now that he is older, but he is incredible. I have had him since he was a year old. He has never bit me, likes to dance to music, and he can say some words. He does a wolf whistle too. During my hard times, he was there for me. I'm not ready to lose him. They're incredible birds. I've had 4 already.

Having had a cockatiel for the last 13 years, it is hilarious to finally see a cockatiel project bird on this channel. I feel like working with a cockatiel is just so much different from the larger birds and more difficult in many respects.

Cockatiels are SUPER difficult to diet transition. Always been the most difficult birds I’ve worked with on diet transitioning cause it took SOOO long

I loved my cockatiels. Had Poco, which I mated with my nieces male. Took one of the females home and mom and daughter were so loving. Instant love. She recognized my car and started loudly chirping until I went up to say hello. My 65 lbs dogs were totally freaked out by them. All they did was walk on the dog’s back and preen them. 😂😂 they hid under my hair and next thing the preening began. Immediately learned that making my index finger go forward and back meant scratching and massaging the head, helping to disguise the removal of the new feather sheaths. They loved their baths and sitting next to windows listening to birds outside. Just loved them to pieces

ohhh, my little guy was named Poco, too! He was hand fed and I got him as a baby. He was the sweetest bird I've ever had. He lived on my shoulder. I miss him almost daily and he passed 30 years ago!

I have to say I’m surprised at not only Clyde’s behavior but also the comments. I have had two cockatiels in my childhood and they were both very sweet. I was never bit hard by either one of them. I always thought Cockatiels were just sweethearts. Now as someone who was considering getting another one I’m a little scared!

same! I have two of the sweetest tiels. They're temperamental and can be nappy but they never actually bit me, aside from one time when I had to catch my female because she injured her paw. And even then she didn't drew blood. Guess we got lucky? haha

Any species is capable of showing aggression and fear, especially when they might have a background of not being treated with respect. The good news is that with time, patience and by applying permission based training most parrots can overcome those previous fears and tendency towards aggression.

I’ve had crazy tiels and I’ve had superrrr sweet tiels that were like little dogs. Super smart, affectionate, never bit. If it did it never hurt and just tickled. I love tiels they’re all so different

I'm so glad you are sharing this content. I have 2 cockatiels and I know exactly the struggle. LOL! I thought it was only my birds. It is like they are saying "I'm the boss!" lol

He reminds me so much of my Archimedes, who passed two years ago. He was such a bitchy little bird. Would not go off seed, but would occasionally nibble on broccoli slaw. Love his millet and playing on the top of his cage. Had a special distress call for when he landed on the floor(never would try flying up from the floor) and realized that there were cats down there and would want rescue. Cats just wondered what the noisy thing on the floor was. I miss him.

Seeing you cover your sleeve to have Clyde step up makes me so happy, I used to have to do this with mine and everyone told me I just needed to let him bite it out etc and that it was the wrong way to go about it. 2 years down the line I hardly ever get bitten and I never have to use my sleeve anymore! He recalls to me, knows the gave of hide and seek and even descends to me when I’m laid on the floor! Anyone out there struggling, don’t give up hope! It can take a while but it’s SO worth. He’s also the cuddliest and clingiest boy ever which sometimes can be so irritating but deep down, I love it 😂 Murphy will be 6 in May and we started this trained when he was 3, a month before he turned 4! Anyone reading this, there is hope and don’t let anyone tell you different ❤ Please let me know if you have questions!

My Amazon took years before he stopped biting me and now he's a good little boy. But I have had a pet psychic talk to him on numerous occasions about biting me biting himself being a brat. That helped a lot but it does take a long time. And cockatoos are the worst but Amazons are not far behind

How can i get him to like baths and quit being agressive?

Going to enjoy this! My Tiel is a little shite during the day with unprovoked and unannounced attacks. At night he’s like a wee sweet baby, loves cuddles and scratches.

Cockatiel owner for nearly 10 years now, think big cocktoo tiny body. They have just as much attitude and are very clever. But, they are tiny fluffy monsters that can be very affectionate with time. They will still bite, mine does if I don't scratch his head correctly (Yes, in his mind there is a wrong way to scratch his head.)

Makes me feel better to see you struggle😂 I mean that in the best way possible

Yes when other bird owners are being bitten and they're frustrated and the bird wants absolutely nothing to do with training, I would never ever betray them by saying or else snickering behind the scenes because we've been there

I always say that cockatiels have the emotions of a full sized cockatoo packed inside that tiny body and they don’t know what to do with it!

Seeing you struggle with a cockatiel makes me feel a lot better about all the progress I made with the lost pet cockatiel that my mother CAUGHT

@@PG-wz7by The thing about cockatiels is they copy human songs by whistling. Many birds parrot speech, and also whistles, but not like cockatiels do. My grandmother had a canary she was very fond of. Sweet birds.

Visited friends at thanksgiving who had a cockatiel (one had died). His owner taught him a Mozart opus. He would only perform for the family daughter. It was stunning. Never saw such a thing.

Great point about being aware of your emotional state before working with your birds. Out of all the birds I've ever had, cockatiels are the most empathic. They really pick up on and mirror your emotions back at you. It's both a blessing and a curse!

My cockatiel is SUPER mean lol. He tolerates me to a point, but anyone else is a target, lol. He still bites me for looking at him funny, though lol. I've had no luck with diet conversion to any birdtricks food, but I've got him on harrisons and some chop (he especially likes carrot and spinach based chop).

Clyde reminds me of my Mochi, she’s so much sass. Yet so sweet. She lets me know when she wants to train or when she just wants to sit on my feet.

I'm fostering a Senegal. This "teaser" seems to be exactly my experience with Holly. She would invite you in and then nail you! For a month I sat with her for Hours and hours. I swear she was planning on how to make sure that the next strike would hurt me more than the last one! I think in my case it could have been grumpy because of diet conversion to chop and your pellets (still working on it) and fear. I let her have her way and was hands off until vet day. I had to get her in the carrier, no longer could I wait for her to decide that I'm actually pretty cool to hang out with. Shock of all shocks, I lowered her foraging tree to the ground and she said "step up" "come here" and decided to be my bestie! Now she needs her forever family to find her so she can flourish with them. I'm so excited to see this series!

Yaaaaaaaaaaay!!! I know this will sound horrible but I'm so glad that you are having the same struggles that all cockatiel owners have!! Ozzy my almost 2 year old boy was hand reared and can be really sweet. Hormones and tiels are a nightmare! Yes the bites hurt like hell when they mean business, but less than green cheeked conures in my experience! I just read his body language so real bites aren't often. I'm really looking forward to seeing this series and how you go along. I only ever want to give Ozzy a healthy happy life, and he loves your grain/seed mix!

Lol now you probably see why we desperately wanted cockatiel content 😆😆 Oh I loveeed and miss my cockatiel Peaches SO much, but yeah fingers were his arch nemesis for 16 out of the 18 years I had him. Unless they were painted! Then it was magically fine 😆. Loved feet, HATED fingers. Diet conversion (once I discovered how bad seeds were) was a huge challenge, too. But, your videos helped so much with both!! So although Clyde put you through the ringer, your wisdom helped me have a much better relationship in addition to helping me realize how bad seed diets are for birds. So thank you for all your videos!! Can't wait to see more of Clyde so I can get my cockatiel fever fix 😍😊

YES!!! Huzzah! Me and my 1 year old male cockatiel, Pidgey, thank you!! I have honestly had only the most positive possible experience with my cockatiel so far (had him since he was 2 months old). He has never bitten, and has been super easy to train, and will willingly eat anything. That said, he's in full hormone zone right now, so who knows what the future brings. So very excited to see this series with Clyde. Tiels are something special, man, for real.

Capri seems to be truly gifted when it comes to working with smaller birds.

My tiel absolutely hates cold pressed pellets. Instead of eating the pellets he will chomp them into bits and toss them around lol. Months of this and he would not relent. I look forward to watching this series

I have 5 cockatiels currently and in total I’ve adopted 8 cockatiels. I’m very interested in seeing how you go about training and diet converting Cylde since every single cockatiel (or parrots in general for that matter) is different with how you train and convert them. None of my cockatiels were trained or diet converted in the same way. They all have different backgrounds, personalities and boundaries. One of my cockatiels loves being around me as much as I’ll allow and one doesn’t want me near him unless for food. Cockatiels are very popular so I’m glad you’re finally doing a series on one.

Ive owned many cockatiels, they are the best. I have NEVER had a bad transition at all. They bonded so fast, so well. I always transitioned them fast after, quarantine and never a let down. Love my cockateils and everyone does things different. Good luck you and everything he has to learn. It will go well, I'm sure!

Our hand raised cockatiel is the best pet we have had. He’s so friendly and loves attention. He thinks he’s a baby puppy with wings and is a total Velcro bird. He’s got his dinosaur moments but he’s the best parrot ever. Oh he’s he’s obsessed with eggs lol. I’m guessing the behaviors are all the difference between a project bird like this and a hand raised baby like ours.

My tiel is an angle! She was my first bird she goes all over with me. She is nice to everyone is happy to sit and get head scratches. She’s mostly quiet compared to other birds at least. She made me fall in love with birds so much that I got a green cheek that came from another home previously. He’s freaking crazy and made me realize I probably don’t need other birds. Very loud and always getting into trouble but I still love him. Cocktails I’m my experience are easy and very sweet coming from my experience.

Looking forward to the new series! About 6 months ago now, I adopted a cockatiel pair from the local parrot shelter after my companion tiel of 11+ years passed away from egg binding. I wanted to wait a bit longer than I originally did, but I needed them as much as they needed a forever home because my mental health took a big hit. Since then I've managed to get them on a healthier pellet, we're working on veggies, and both have already learned step up and spin! I'm so excited to see you work with Clyde! I have two tiels, and they are the sweetest and meanest little things. Terry, my boy is mostly sweet but has attitude! My sister's tiel, Skye, can be a sweet bean one minute and biting the next. We've learned to respect their boundaries and they almost never bite with intent to hurt (when a tiel wants to hurt you, they hurt!). I once offered to bird sit for a tiel like Clyde (looked like him too) and he was a vicious little thing. I love tiels so much though. They were my first parrots and they have a special place in my heart ❤️❤️

I an SO excited for this series! I have been struggling with the cockatiel I rescued about 19 months ago with a lot of similar challenges that you are having with Clyde.

My cockatiel is the same coloring, and he was the same way when I first got him, very standoffish and he still can be from time to time. Honestly got super lucky with how easily I got him onto a pellet diet, I just sprinkled some pellets over the counter with him running around the counter and used my hand to pretend like my hand was eating them he got super curious and here we are 8 years later on a majority pellet diet.

Birds seem to have a different script when it comes to the master plan.

Just remember that cockatiels and cockatoos are not like normal birds. They spend most of their day down in the grass and vegetation foraging for seeds. For that reason many cockatoo and cockatiel owners will tell you they need more seeds than most birds and they think pellets are kind of a scam

Our cockatiel is 15 months old, and we are keen to learn from your experience with Clyde.

I rescued a 25 year old cockatiel that had a bacterial infection and was raised on seed. I took him to the avian doc and he had be convert him to harrisons food. It looks a lot like seed. I used those seed food balls to convert then finally took it away. He has been on pellets for four years. He absolutely loves it. When he bites walk away mine was the same way and sometimes he does the same thing, but quickly realizes he does want out of his cage and squaks for me LOL just my .02

My tiel was a struggle at first too, I had only budgies or lovebirds for 20yrs. I realized with tiels to teach them any commands or tricks is a slow trust process. I love my tiel but she for sure reminds me more of a cat than a parrot 😂

A cockatiel landed in my yard and stepped up when I offered my hand so I feel chosen . Haven’t found the owners so I will probably end up keeping her . She’s super Millet driven and is starting to step up without treats in my hand:) it’s been a week and she’s doing so well. She has attitude but I love it. I’m having trouble switching her from seed to Harrison’s. Hopefully soon

This is awesome news! Looking forward to the whole series. And I love that you don't show only the glamorous side of pet rescuing. We all have put mental limits, and birds are individuals with unique personalities. I'm still working on establishing a relationship with my rescue Senegal, and I am struggling (like, the first few weeks I had to up my antidepressants and I still spent the days crying and feeling horrible. Mine grew in an small aviary with other birds and had little human interaction, so he is a savage. So, of course, I would love to see a Senegal series(especially since I read they are in the top of abandoned parrots).

I am excited for you! We adopted Milo, our male tiel 3 years ago. We were able to transition his diet from all seeds to pellets and some veggies with seeds being a treat now. My vet recommended Harrison’s fine foods which helped us convert. He is definitely more moody as can be. So sweet and so mean all in one😅. He has come such a long way very slowly over time. Can’t wait to learn from you!

Ive been thinking about getting a bird for about 3 yrs now. Researching different breeds, what they need and how to bring them home and train them successfully. I want to give a rescue bird the best life. A tiel or a couple is in my top 5.

I have a slightly bitey hahns/sun cross. Appreciate all your content re biting. She's only young (1yo) so we are working on it. She's super velcro birb and very bonded, so that helps, but she's a lil nippy at times.

This video reminds me so much of my cockatiel. Legit just randomly is in a terrible mood and lunges at you while willingly sitting on your lap. My sister would just look at him as he sat fluffed on her leg and he took two steps closer beak open... Of course it was mostly resolved by diet conversion, but there were still those times when he was triggered by a dark nesty place or something...

These birds are temperamental. Unpredictable until 100% trust.

Yaaaaaah!!!!!!!! Awesome! I have one that I still can’t fully convert off his seed diet. His weight also automatically drops if I remove too much of the seeds. It is Soooo annoying. He also refuses all baths in all formats. My other one eats everything and takes baths, but he tends to be quite aggressive with me, especially when I need to handle his buddy. They compliment each other well. I sometimes feel like they’re the ones training me to be their pet rather than the opposite.

Really looking forward to this series! I adopted a cranky old man with a lot of the same issues i caught glimpses of here. It took me a week or so to get him to eat your recommended seed mix and an entire year before he really touched his chop despite seeing my other cockatiel eating it. He is super nippy like this guy and can cause blood if not careful. We have come a long way though thanks to your videos, so I can not wait to see how you work through this!

Oh my goodness I am so excited for this series! Having literally owned cockatiels my entire life (Tango was there when I was born), I had to laugh and shake my head when Clyde did things my feather children have done. Everything from surprising bites, to being butts about diet conversion, they are still sweet babies and so worth the time and patience! I also feel validated, since previously I was shamed when diet conversion was taking a bit of time for me and my current cockatiels. Anyway, I'm curious to see how you handle these classic cockatiel struggles, and look forward to learning new tips!

So happy you're doing a cockatiel! This looks like my struggle when I tried to convert my tiel to organic pellets (just about all veggies and fruits are dead to him lol), I had to crush them up into very tiny bits and it was a constant battle where I had to bring back the seed mix his previous owners fed him because I'd worry he wasn't eating enough. Eventually, he switched, but I'd still give him some near the end of the day just encase. They're very stubborn and I kept feeling bad I wasn't doing the conversion right seeing how some succeeded more easily but tiels are definitely very stubborn and afraid of things they're not used to early on. Can't wait to see the rest of this!
