I am 78 years old. My first job from school. was as an apprentice at J and P Coats in Paisley. I started fresh from Hillhead High School in Glasgow. After a preliminary few months at the Glasgow Head Office in Bothwell St, I was sent down to Paisley about 12 miles away. I travelled there from the housing estate Khightswood in the west of Glasgow, by my Vespa scooter, over the Renfrew Ferry , down the Renfrew Rd to Paisley. Work started at 7. Am. The noise of the Spinning machines was deafening . At that time there must have been 6000 people employed between Anchor and Ferguslie mills. Britain was making things, there was a community. Sadly gone.

Here's a confession. The building at 1:31 which appears to be gutted by fire. Well...it is. I was around 11-12 years old at the time and used to jump around that area with my pals. I was on my own at this time, playing around it that building "the counting house?" and was playing around with a box of matches. It was a hot summers day and every thing was dry. I lit a match and threw it. It instantly caught on the dry wood and started spreading. I tried everything to put it out...panicking...I even tried peeing on it but it had gone too far, so I decided then to give and run...so I did..ran back to my house in Millarston Court. My family and I watched as the building burned from our 8th floor window and I'm standing there panicking in case I got caught. There is a report somewhere online about that building where it says it was destroyed by fire in the 80s. Feels weird reading it when I know it was me that done it... there we go....confession :)
