Coast to Coast!

Спорт

It's Easter Saturday and after yesterday's wonderful triangle flight from the Blorenge to Pen-y-Fan, Hay Bluff, and back to Abergavenny (well almost!), the forecast was looking really good for a flight up to North Wales today.
Clip in and join me on a very scenic four hour 143km flight from Cwmbran in South Wales (15kms from the sea) to Fairbourne in North Wales...
NB. Please excuse the poor sound quality in this recording - I didn't have the external mic set up correctly

    Thanks for another great video😃 I noticed that you are now flying with Weightless. I fly with Lightness 3 and I'm thinking of switching to Weightless, because of the lighter weight... I will be very happy if you could comment on the difference in roll stability between these two harnesses. Thanks.

  • @TimPentreath

    @TimPentreath

    7 ай бұрын

    Glad you enjoyed it...! I bought a Weightless at the beginning of the season and really only had two flights on it before switching back to my trusty (and somewhat beaten-up) Lightness 3. I got it in my head that I needed a Weightless and when one came up at a good price I jumped at it, however I soon realised I didn't really need it at all! The main thing was that I don't actually need to lose any weight with my flying gear, except possibly when doing H&F races and volbiv, but for volbiv space and durability is more important anyway... Once I'd got it set up correctly is was really comfortable, it fitted like a glove, however I found it fiddly to get into and fiddly to use - eg flight deck "bib" - and also getting my camelback nozzle through the harness was a struggle. I didn't find the windscreen particularly effective either... So whilst it's a lovely bit of kit I decided it wasn't for me so I sold it again and now I'm waiting for the Lightness 4! Hope that helps...

    I’ve just realised I didn’t actually answer your question on roll stability… I must admit it’s had to remember as this flight back at Easter was the last time I flew the Weightless… I think all I can really say is that I felt very comfortable flying it, both in terms of physical comfort, and flying comfort. I suspect it is more roll stable than the L3 but can’t say for sure…

    Thanks Sam... This was using the Insta360 X3 which I've lent to a mate for most of the summer (and might sell it to him). I think the ideal set up is how Ben Kellett does it, with a GoPro on the helmet and a 360 on a pole attached to the carabiner but it's a lot of kit to lug around, and I'm not sure I've got the patience for the editing... Having said that though, editing this one wasn't too bad because I mainly only had the camera running when I had something to say, but the problem if you record the whole flight say, is that Insta Studio doesn't play any sound when scrubbing through the footage, so you have to play it at 1x to hear when you speak, which is a right pita. I suspect I'll stick to just the GoPro in future, but I'm interested in what you think of this vid vs my other recent GoPro only vids...? Cheers

  • @samtolton

    @samtolton

    I really like the timelapse shots and being able to keep an inquisitive horse constantly in shot is super useful but I couldn't see that sailplane for ages - it really lacks detail at distance. I think you're right, the talented Mr Kellett has got it down using both cameras but yeah, it's more stuff and it must be a pain to combine the feeds if you're not used to it. A single camera that combined a high definition forward lens + 360 lenses would be cool.

    Just a question about staying warm: I got up to 600m at Devil's Dyke recently and I was very cold. I have: a down jacket (light) Very thin fleece - to be replaced with a 300gsm fleece waterproof outer that acts as a windbreaker trousers The idea is to replace the thin fleece with a 300gsm fleece, wear long johns and possibly add a waterproof outer to my trousers. I know pilots wear heated gloves, but I was wondering about layering here as well - say with wool and thicker gloves on the outside. I'm on an open harness and don't benefit from the wind breaking abilities of a pod. Any thoughts would be well regarded. Great vid as usual Tim.

  • @TimPentreath

    @TimPentreath

    Hi Jacque, I’m glad you enjoyed the vid 👍🏻 Re staying warm, I think a pod harness (together with a windscreen) makes the biggest difference however you shouldn’t rush to get one if you’re not ready. Deffo wear long johns and a windproof/waterproof layer, but maybe even better would be skiiing salopettes especially if they go up to your chest. As for your top half, I’m a big fan of Montane base layers - I live in them in the winter! But in addition I’d recommend a couple of thin fleecy layers and a thicker down/puffa type jacket. A buff round your neck and a balaclava are essential too. As for gloves I’ve not gone down the heated gloves route - it’s just more faff, although maybe they do work well… I wear wrist “sleeves” (dunno what they’re called) which go over my thumbs, then thin silk (maybe) inner liners into which I stuff a Little Hottie heat pad (NB. let them heat up for 15 mins before putting in your glove). Then thick Montane ski gloves on top… I know they’re not exactly cool these days but the old school flying suits from Ozee were popular back in the day too! Hope this helps…

    @@TimPentreath this is so helpful.. Thank you. I'm not a fan of going down the heated gloves route myself, so your ideas on hand testing will definitely be researched.
