Going Big - a 200km flight to goal!
Спорт
It's Friday 7th July and a rare break in the terrible 2023 summer has all the usual suspects rushing to Golden Ball, a small hill on the Marlborough Downs in the south of the UK. We'd set an ambitious 200km goal just before you run out of airspace north of Crewe, and by midday most of us were on our way north... Grab a beer, fire up the widescreen TV, dim the lights, and join me on my Omega XAlps 4 (which is for sale BTW) for the ups and downs of my 6.5 hour flight across the English countryside...

Hey Tim, really appreciate another great video, first 100 looked ropey. Loved the comment after the early collapse about wanting to get something to eat, no way am I letting go of those toggles. It's great to see how hard you had to fly to get the 200km, Us mere mortal pilots always think you guys just take off, point it and 6 hrs later 200km plus.

Cheers Mark, glad you enjoyed it! Yep, nothing’s ever completely plain sailing - I guess it’d be boring if it was!
Flatland flying is so mysterious at times :D I dont think it was you finaly syncing up with the clouds as much as it was the conditions getting stronger. Look at those beautiful little cumulus clouds. 🥰 I love the final part. All the things you wished for but not right now.

It was strange - quite a few other pilots found it really difficult to start with, yet others cruised on by... who knows? But yes, it could have just go better, and the pilots who had an easier time to start with just had a bit more luck on their side perhaps? Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic flight Tim and great commentary. You certainly had to work hard for the that one especially early on. How frustrating when you get more lift at the end of the flight when you don’t need it! Keep them coming. 👍

Thanks Steve, glad you enjoyed it... Yes, damn that Manchester airspace, I think another 50kms was easily possible, if not more, given the conditions!
Muchas gracias Tim por el video ,un gran vuelo y dificil ,un abrazo

Great Flight Tim. Frank in Kilkenny Ireland. Orville and Wilbur would have loved a flight like that. Imagine if they had the opportunity to fly a Paraglider. Its been raining all summer in the south of Ireland. Send some good xc weather this way. Thanks F.

Hi Frank, thanks for your comments... yeah, that's quite a thought isn't it (O&W) - what would they think of what we can do these days hanging under a bit of cloth and string... it really is amazing! You're now the third Irishman who's bemoaned the weather in Ireland (NI & ROI) this summer...! It must be bad... mind you it's not been much better over here - we get a good day then three weeks later another good day, although when I say good it's either v light wind, so not much good for less experienced pilots, or top end, so again not much good for less experienced pilots... frustrating for them... Maybe we'll have an Indian summer in Sept/Oct 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Excellent flight & really useful, lots to learn from. Thanks for sharing Tim.

Chees Dan, yeah, definitely a flight of two halves!
Fantastic flight Tim. I did exactly what you recommended. Beer, 4k Tv and watched you fly across the lovely Uk countryside. Managed a little 43km flight a couple of weeks ago but weather here in Ireland has been crap too. Love the videos, you do a great job of narating and editing. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Gerry👍

Thanks for the comments Gerry, glad you enjoyed it! Funny that you're the second person from Ireland (Derek from NI) commenting on the bad weather... don't think it's been much better here either...
Congrats with your amazing flight Tim! What an adventure!!🤩👍😘 greetings from the Netherlands!

@@TimPentreath Learnt lots from your vids....A bit of a suggestion: Any chance of a map screenshot showing your launch and and declared goal before the flight footage?I don't know if there's others watching from outside the UK but it would be nice to know the general geographic location and challenge so to speak.I was on a boating weekend on the canal nearby that site a few years back... Adam Hill pointed it out to me... couldn't believe it was a viable flying site being so low and shallow...seems to work well 👍

Yeah, good point... must admit I normally link to the tracklog in the vid description but forgot to this time (now added), but here it is anyway www.xcontest.org/world/en/flights/detail:timpent/7.7.2023/10:19 It's a very thermic site so works really well... There's another site a bit like that - Liddington, near Swindon. You drive past it on the M4 motorway and you barely even notice the hill, but again, it works well...
Great flight
