14:16 One thing I love about this scene is how Hinata is so tired and depressed one moment and doesn't want to eat. . . takes that first reluctant bite of rice. . . and then suddenly realizes he's freaking hungry and just starts going to town. It's such a relatable moment: being so emotionally drained you don't want to even gather up the strength to eat, but then your body makes you realize that food is exactly what you need right now. As for favorite scenes: the moment Kageyama realizes that Hinata is NOT going to give up no matter what during their passing practice, and finally relents and sets him a spike. Over and over in this show, other characters run into Hinata and start off disrespecting him, but eventually gain respect for him because of his sheer tenacity, humbleness, and desire to improve. Kageyama's the first.

As a teacher, Takeda-sensei's speech after the Aoba Johsai game (actually, both games, but especially Inter-High), was something I aspire to. Straightforward, brutally honest and unforgiving, but nurturing and inspiring. Ikejiri's speech after losing in the first round in Inter-High to Karasuno was also moving--essentially admitting to being an "extra" or "side character," but asserting that there was meaning in that for him, and for others. Haikyu as a series insists that everyone has a roll to play, and that when they do their best at it, it makes everyone better.

I may be biased since I am a hitter, but I would say I agree with Oikawa's philosophy. The reason being, the setters decision is which hitter is the best decision right now based on: the positions of the opposing blockers' movements, the positions and 'readiness' of his hitters, and how well the hitters have been doing that game. Where and how to hit is and should be the decision of the hitter. You see this in the same episode as when Oikawa says his philosophy to Kageyama.

As a setter, it’s hard to agree and/or disagree. A player’s best set varies for each person, some like it high/low/fast/slow, etc. With that being said, it makes it more stressful and difficult for a setter to be able to understand each player’s preference and to be able to pull that off consistently throughout the game. So yes, if you give a hitter what they like, it’s easier for them to hit. However, not many setters can pull those sets off the entire game.

My fav scene is when Oikawa says "not today" I know its a very negativ scene for haikyuu in a way but I like it thats so brutal and it feels real. Often sport-anime do the mistake and let the "main character" team win almost all of their matches which ends up boring and predictable but this came rather suprising to me. Its just extremly important scene (plotwise especially). Also the scene itself was just very well made with Oikawa behind in the back knowing his plan will work (he literally only uses his team in this situation) and knowing he won because he made his team as strong as he could to beat karasunos amazing talent and potential. It perfectly matches the philosophy of the stronger 6 win. He appears almost like a villain and also a strong one. I dont like weak villains... I think almost nobody does. Stronger opponents just make more interesting characters. If they would have won the character would feel even less interesting.. but thats just my opinion. I wonder what other people think.

"no kageyama, no hinata" coaaaaach hahaha 🤣 but srsly, your top 10 fave scenes from season 1 are also fan favourites. regarding your starting lineup, i am truly amazed at how well u picked your players. haikyuu manga actually once had a poll on which fans can vote for their own starting lineup but only a few chose the way u do. i love how u see kageyama as an offensive player and even if u haven't warmed up to oikawa, u still chose him as ur setter acknowledging his experience. aone and kindaichi as middle blockers is what gave me joy! kindaichi is often overlooked but he's actually really good, thanks for adding him in your team. i love how u objectively chose your lineup w/o letting your own bias lead your decisions. lastly, congratulations on finishing season 1! thank u for your hardwork and for sharing your professional insights.

Hi Coach, The episode/scene that was often left unnoticed but my most favourite one is EP16, winners and losers. The scene where Ikejiri and Michimiya is talking about their regrets made me sulk in tears. As a former athlete, I was once placed in this kind of situation and even if I tell myself that I gave my all, I still can't help but fill myself with regrets. Seeing this scene is like scratching the wounds from our what ifs in the game, and in life. I fell in love with this anime because of that scene. Everything is so surreal when you watch this. I love how they showed the player's emotions of what comes to their mind whenever someone(or a team) experiences a defeat. Thank you for reacting to this great anime and looking forward to more of your reaction videos!!😁

So glad you chose Kageyama as an opposite, Coach! I don't think a huge majority of Haikyuu anime fans realize how the position works as it is the best position for the two extremes of a volleyball player, IMO. Kageyama pretty much checks all of the marks that I really like for an opposite: 1) A powerful swing from an opposite which drastically ups the overall team's offense. 2) Superior accuracy and ball control, which is often a problem for righty opposites. 3) Setter skills, as opposites work really well as secondary setters in a typical lineup. 4) Great all-arounder stats and technique, which is the most ideal quality of opposites in a typical lineup. 5) Lastly, he has the stamina that can keep up with middle blockers, which is very important for opposites, as they function really close to middles minus the inordinate amounts of lateral movement and decoy function.

My favorite scene from the whole of season one, was your #10. The scene with them eating and letting out their sadness and frustrations, to me, was really relatable and incredibly touching. It really had an impact on me when I first watched the show. They fought hard in their match against Aoba Josai. They went full matches, all the way to the 30s in a back and forth deuce. They gave it their all, but to no prevail. Personally, I felt as frustrated as them. Watching them fight so hard, only to lose, I wasn't expecting that. I was just as surprised and disappointed. However, that scene really touched me. Watching them eat with tears flowing, and hearing the words of inspiration from the coaches made me realize that it was a necessary loss. This was only the beginning. They were only going to get stronger from that point on. I have thoroughly enjoyed your reactions coach. I am ecstatic for you to eventually dive into season two. There is so much to look forward to! Thanks for your thoughtful commentary. It made for a very inspiration, educational, and invigorating experience.
